Crafting On

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post it on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

Hey, what do you know?? I am actually crocheting! Well, trying to at least. Baby F's Woodlands Bear Hat kit from Stitch and Story has crocheted details so it is making me face my fear of crochet.

Starting on little pillow for L now. He doesn't need the tooth fairy pocket since he has a shark tooth fairy pillow but hopefully this one will help him settle down for bed at night. *fingers crossed*

Wild Violet Lemonade (Water Kefir) Recipe & the Newest Additions to Our Flock

The warm weather is finally here so I can start planning my mini-garden. I was told by the old-time farmers here to wait until Memorial Day before planting anything outdoors so I am still having to play the waiting game for just a bit longer. In the meantime the kids and I are busy foraging for chickweed, dandelions, ramps and violets. Endless amounts of violets!! They are one of Baby F's current favorite snacks straight out of the ground. I enjoy them a but more in salads, personally. As for the rest of my family, they love them fresh from the ground, too but their favorite way of having them is in Wild Violet Lemonade Water Kefir. I thought I would share the recipe with all of you.

To make it you first need to make a Wild Violet Syrup:
Gather 2 cups of violets (flowers only) and bring them inside to rinse off. Heat 1 cup of water in a sauce pan just to a simmer. Turn off the heat and then add your violets. Stir well. Let sit for 24 hours.
Now strain the violets and feed them to your chickens or compost them. Pour the violet water back into the sauce pan. Add about 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to the violet water. This is my children's favorite part - you get to see the color go from a muted blue/purple to a bright purple in seconds! Now add 2 cups of sugar to the sauce pan and stir constantly over a low heat. Do not boil! You'll lose that beautiful color. Store in your refrigerator. Ours lasts us about 2 -3 weeks but that is because we use it all up by then.

Now that you have your Wild Violet Syrup, it is time to make it into lemonade. We make ours using our water kefir grains for gut health. Just add 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/4 cup Wild Violet Syrup to 1 quart of water kefir (grains removed - this will be your 2nd ferment). Stir to combine and store in your refrigerator. You can drink it right away but I would recommend waiting until it is chilled. The longer it its in the refrigerator, the more the flavor will develop. You could make wild violet lemonade without the kefir by just adding lemon juice and the syrup to water.

Enjoy!

p.s. - I realized that I never shared photos from our latest flock. They arrived back in March and actually just graduated from brooders in my girls' room to living outside in the coop with the big chickens.

My kiddos all have colds and the day got away from me so I couldn't capture my current WIP. Instead I am sharing C's finished belated birthday gift. It is rather a three in one gift. I stuffed it with rice (so she can put in the freezer for owies) and lavender (to help her sleep) and it has a pocket on the back for her to place her lost teeth for the tooth fairy. The fabric is soft linen (including the pocket) and the embroidered hedgehog was a little idea I had in my head for awhile. I am happy with how he came out.

Oh my goodness you guys! Thank you for all the messages, comments and emails about my last post. I truly appreciate each and every one of them. Thank you for reaching out and letting me know that I am not alone. I will keep on keeping on the best I can 😍

Since I have been sewing the past couple of weeks I thought I would continue with it and work on a project I have wanted to make for many, many years now - a little patchwork mat (from Patchwork Style) for in front of the play kitchen. Baby F is quite the little cook so it seems a necessity, no? I *think* I first wanted to sew one of these back when my girls were tiny and Soulemama made one for her daughter. My tiny girl days are gone (at least for now) so this mat will be very boyish. I am using scraps from some of my favorite projects as well as some sweet farm fabric from a dress that both K and C wore as toddlers. It will be full of memories that is for sure. I just wish I wasn't being so indecisive with the placement of the fabric scraps. He'll be standing on it after all but that is just how I am, I guess.

Annnndddd...I am still having issues with Flickr so I am still uploading photos to the blog directly.

Checking In... Anyone There?

K's artwork for her RE teacher

Hey everyone! I am just getting around to posting some photos from Easter. Sunday nights are some of the busiest nights for me with the weekend winding down, meal prepping and preparing for the upcoming school week. I don't remember why I chose Sunday nights to be my night to do blog posts. Maybe it was me sticking to my old rhythm of posting Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Then again I haven't followed that schedule in quite a long time now have I? I suppose old habits really do die hard. I seem to have it set in my mind that I can only post on the same day every week instead of sporadically. But life has become so very full that I rarely seem to post on that night anymore. Many of you have emailed telling me that you miss the way I used to post and I can tell by comments being few and far between that many have given up on me. I'm sorry if I let you down. So I though I would check in with all of you. Do you stop in to see if I post on Sunday nights? Do you think that I should just post sporadically during the week instead, when I might find more time and energy to do so? I would love to hear from you.
