the Tailor of Gloucester {in real life}

simpkin sweet Simpkin scary Simpkin simpkin mouse mouse mouse
The story of the Tailor of Gloucester came to life recently in our home. Simpkin was the star, of course, since Little L named her after his favorite story (even though Simpkin is a boy in the story.)

"Alack, I am undone!"

I was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee to try to wake up from another sleepless night when I heard a number of little noises -

tip tap, tip tap, tip tap tip!

I didn't think anything of it, with 5 cats, 4 dogs and 3 children in our house little noises don't grab my attention, on the contrary, it's the lack of noise that needs looking into! Quiet usually means someone is up to some mischief!

tip tap, tip tap, tip tap tip!
"This is passing extraordinary!"

Then there was a scuffle followed by, "Mama!! Get Simpkin - she found a mouse and she is going to hurt it!" That got my attention. I ran over to C in the living room and she pointed to our hallway closet. Inside I found Simpkin chasing a little field mouse. I grabbed Simpkin and put her in our bedroom and then found an old container to scoop the mouse up in. It took a bit of coaxing, and a piece of a bagel to finally get the mouse safe in the container. C and I kept her in there until K was done with her shower. We knew she would not want to miss the chance to see our find.

Once K was finished and had a few minutes with the mouse, we went out back to find a safe place to release him. Simpkin meowed through the bedroom door. She knew something was amiss.

"Was it right to let loose the mouse, undoubtedly the property of Simpkin? Alack, I am undone for I no longer get any rest!"

We found a spot in the grass away from people, hawks and dogs and K set him free. As we watched him run to safety we felt a sense of relief, especially my girls, they cherish all life and seek to help any living being they can - a quality I truly love about them (they were rescuing flies out of the dogs water bowl this morning. oh boy!)We let Simpkin out of the bedroom once we came back inside. She searched for her mouse and spent the rest of the day sulking and meowing like a cat that is vexed, for she could not find it.

On another note, we made some amazing nachos over the weekend. For those of you who may not have seen them over on the FB page, I had to share here. Speaking of which, I never did mention that I finally got around to creating a FB page for Frontier Dreams last month. You can find it here. Since I seem to only find time to post here about 3 times a week lately, I enjoy posting pictures and other things on the FB page in between.

Also, thank you everyone for your comments on our sleeping troubles! I am so very grateful that you took the time to respond to my desperate plea. Thank you! You have so much advice and I plan to start using some of it this week. I'll keep you all updated with how it goes!

Beautiful. And a very lucky mouse. In our house if madam finds a mouse she goes and gets the cat!

Ha,ha. The cats use to catch mice back in our Oregon house. We just couldn't tell the girls about it. But isn't that the cat's job?!
Thank you for sharing, I will look for you on Facebook. My boy also cherish life, any life, plants and animals, it's beautiful, but also cause him some distress when he see a hurt tree or a pet store.
I hope you'll son be sleeping well, hugs.

oh yes, that is the down side. My girls suffer too when they see others in pain :( What a compassionate heart your sweet boy has!
Do you use a specific curriculum for homeschool? We just purchased Kindergarten from Oak meadow and while it looks great I just don't know how I could make it work for three kids in the future (my kids are 4.5, 2, 9months). How do you seem to make it work for three kids, and have the time for all the other stuff?

Boy, do I hear you! I don't make it work, really. I have a feeling you are much better off than I! :) I take it 1 day at a time and try again the next day. I still firmly believe in Waldorf education so I chose a "Waldorf purist" (as they call it) curriculum. We will finally get started with the Christopherus curriculum very soon. We have been keeping it really relaxed and basically doing a Waldorf form of unschooling the past few months. I felt it was more important to get our family life in order before we tried schooling. Plus K was in school at PWS for half the year before we moved so it shouldn't take us long to catch up and start 3rd grade in the fall. We will be homeschooling year round 3-4 days a week to give us more family time.
These past few months we have been focusing on a good rhythm, nature walks, outside time, writing letters to classmates back in Portland, lots of home life activities such as baking, polishing, cleaning, and things of that nature. With Waldorf schooling, you don't begin any kind of formal teaching until 1st grade and the child is 7 or close to it (with signs of readiness like losing the first baby teeth, etc..), so right now I am only schooling my oldest. C will begin 1st grade in the fall and Little L has a good 4 more years before I need to think about his lessons. So when you look at it that way, you can see I really am not doing that much right now.
The Christopherus Waldorf curriculum overview for homeschoolers by Donna Simmons is an excellent resource even if you don't use their curriculum. You can find them used online. I hope this info is somewhat helpful and if you need anything please do let me know!! XOXO
oh I should add, any of the other stuff tends to take place late at night after everyone is asleep (and I should be too!)
