Gnome! {Waldorf 2nd grade handwork by K}

gnome gnome gnome gnome K's gnome {2nd grade Waldorf handwork} K was my art director for this shot

I am very pleased to present K's most recently completed handwork project - a gnome (complete with a beard!) As I am sure you can see, K is very proud. I adore all of her handwork creations and love looking back at them later on and remembering what skill she learned with each one. This little guy taught her the art of purling, something she has been patiently waiting to learn. She started him back in November at the Portland Waldorf School with her dear classmates, took it with her when we moved and now just completed it last week. I think she finished the knitting for it in December but it just took us this long to sew it all together. Our rhythm is still pretty much all over the place so handwork days have fallen away a bit. But perhaps this finished work is just the inspiration we need to settle back into a good rhythm. I know how healing knitting is for me and I can see it work it's magic on K, too.  She has already cast on her next project- a pig! But shhh, she doesn't know what it is yet. I am guessing it won't take her too long to figure it out. You can see all of her handwork from 1st grade here.

Thank you for all of your comments on my last post. You reminded me that I am not alone in the way I think and parent and I really needed that - this little black sheep was beginning to feel lost.

Thats is a wonderful gnome! she is one clever little girl :)
What a great little knitter she is! Such a sweet gnome. I just love seeing the next generation of crafters at work.
It's beautiful! I really love the colors for its body and hat.
Oh how wonderful, I think it is so great that children learn how to use their hands like this! What a much more productive way to learn eye hand coordination than video games!

Yes, I agree! Knitting really engages the brain, too.
Just looked at the post of her 1st grade projects - all so darling! I just love that the children are learning these skills - def. a fun way to learn and so natural. Also, I loved your post on your sons first haircut! I remember my (now 12 year old) having his first cut - sitting in the fireplace cutting chair! He was a sweat-head so it was important to keep him cool! Oh, but how I hated to cut the locks!
OOPS!!! Supposed to read "fire truck" cutting chair!!!

ha,ha. That makes more sense :p It's so hard cutting off their baby hair, isn't it?
How cute! Good job, sweet girl!
A wonderful gnome if ever I saw one. Clever girl.

Thanks for asking! It is verrrrrry slow going. We are taking our time moving into this new phase of life. We plan on homeschooling year round so I am feeling somewhat comfortable with our slow progress.
Yes, this is our first year too and I am totally fine with the slow pace...they truly are learning all the time!
Dear Nichole. Perhaps you have a pattern for this sweet gnome? I think my son would love to try it...

I wish I did :( It was a pattern from her handwork teacher. There are similar gnomes though in one of the two Waldorf knitting books I mentioned in this post: http://frontierdreams.blogspot.com/2011/05/knitti... HTH!
Thank you, Nichole!
I appreciate it so much. I have the first book, but now I see that the gnome is in the second book.
May I ask your recommendation also for a valuable book with easy projects for a boy beginner on
machine sewing?
