Display at school last week.

Thank you everyone for your sincere words last week. They were deeply felt and I am very grateful for them, thank you! I have spent the past couple of days sewing and I must confess, that was just what I needed to help me at least start to get out of my funk. Food for my soul. *ahem* Now would you mind sharing some of those thoughts with my husband and a couple of other people, for me? Hee,hee.

Our school's annual Heart of Advent event is next weekend and I am counting down the minutes until I can go. It's a truly beautiful adults only seasonal event. It recognizes the many festivals and holy days of this time of year by gathering friends to create together and share their inspirations for handmade crafts and family traditions. I wouldn't miss it for the world! This will be my third year going, (my first year and last year) that is as long as Kevin isn't forced to work again this Saturday. Fingers crossed it all works out.
For my locals: The Heart of Advent takes place Saturday, November 12th from 11am to 4pm at the Portland Waldorf School.

Speaking of crafting, I am hoping to make a little bit of money this holiday season with out taking too much time away from my family. I am planning to create some simple crafts like beeswax impressions to sell in the Spring Creek Store. I am finishing one up tonight to bring in tomorrow and see what they think. It's a beautiful nativity impression/medallion. I'll get some pics of it and post them soon. K already wants one for the window in her bedroom but I have some other secret plans for that window this Advent season...
Hey, while we are at it, I know it may seem early but Advent is just around the corner. I am trying to think of some different things to do with the girls this year. Does anyone have any suggestions for advent activities/crafts for children?

I have to make sure my eyes are not bigger than my capabilities this year. I just found this book Magic Wool Fairies, and wow, talk about inspiring! I want to just dive in and make a bunch of them. I mean, seriously, look at these ones currently on display at the Spring Creek Store:

Aren't they beautiful? I would love to make one or two, perhaps after I finish up the girls' Phoebe sweaters. I got an e-mail letting me know my yarn is on it's way for C's sweater so I will be getting started on that this week. Oh - make sure you stop in here Tuesday night for a great Phoebe's Sweater giveaway! I really need to sit down and make a list of what I would like to accomplish this holiday season so I can figure out what is doable and realistic and what is just too much...

after all, I do have these three crazy ones to chase after and love every minute I can!

I may as well end this very random post with a bit more randomness.
I am head over heels in love with the two prints you see above (especially the second one) and I am hoping to get prints of my own to hang in our home. Does anyone happen to know they names of either of these prints? I don't know how to begin looking for them without knowing what they are called. I tried googling 'Madonna' and I only came up with images of the pop artist.

I hope you all had a relaxing weekend! I need to get back to my beeswaxing endeavors. See you again tomorrow.

I just did a google image search for maria baby jesus painting and found quite a few picures that were similar.

i also found one that showed Maria breastfeeding the naked baby...don't think that would be in a public place these days. Even though it's totally natural.
I have the first one in my dining room, I will see if I can find the name : )

The first painting is by Adolphe-William Bouguereau entitled: Virgin of the Angels [recently cleaned so color is different on different reproductions]
The second is Raphael's Madonna and child with the young St. John

Hope this proves helpful in finding reproductions. xo Julie
The top one is "La Vierge Aux Anges" by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
The other is "Madonna della Seggiola" by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino)
I get some Catholic catalogs that sell these prints. Art.com ought to have them, as they are very popular. I have a Bouguereau print "Madonna of the Lilies" on my wall and at the top of the sidebar on my blog.

They photos of the girls with Lucien in the middle is heartwarming! And I think I will be very interested on your beeswax creation! I thought of doing the same last year (with the same mold, in fact!) and just have had too many other thing going to start a new craft endeavor!
The second photo is Madonna of the chair. http://www.finearttouch.com/Raphael_s_Madonna_of_...
OH I wish the Heart of Advent festivities were the weekend of the 19th! I'd send the boys to OMSI and join you there! Can't wait to see what you're cooking up for the shop. And your windows. And your babes. xoxo.
This looks like a wonderful event! We are using this for Advent this year: http://cradletocrosswreath.com/ I love that a boy makes these and the figures do come with it. I got on the list last year and was able to get one for this season. Otherwise, last year we hung little bags in our dining room, decorated with numbers to show the days of Advent. Each day, there were at least gold chocolates in there for the kids; other days there were little gifts like a Christmas book, needle felted angel, kit for making Christmas tree decorations. Not sure what I'll pull out of the hat this year, but coupons for hot chocolate, sledding and ice skating come to mind. My kids are 6 and 2.5, so, we have a pretty huge discrepancy in abilities right now, so, I'm not sure what crafting I will come up with for them to do. At the very least, I'm sure there is something we can bake together to give as gifts to our neighbors.

That's beautiful! Thank you for sharing that!
Bouguereau is my FAVORITE artist. He painted many lovely scenes that are similar to the one you showed. I have a large collection of his works, (prints, obviously) and I LOVE the rich colors and the beautiful people... If possible, try to find a printed calendar of the artists you like... it is a rather inexpensive way to get smaller prints to frame!
Oh, that crafting event sounds wonderful! I do hope you're able to go.Good luck with selling your beeswax impressions. It's nice to have a little extra pocket money this time of yr. :)

We are doing a book advent this year. I have wrapped 24 Christmas themed books, some we had, some I bought used, and a couple of new ones. Each night, the children can pick and unwrap one to read. We will count the remaining books each night and use that as our countdown. I always get so overwhelmed trying to make all those little fun things...I thought this would be easier on Momma and just as fun!
I love the fairies! My Magic Wool Fairies book just arrived on Saturday. Looking forward to making a few before Christmas. Post some photos if you make some. :-)
I love these too! There are many famous and less famous paintings with the same subject matter...if you search for 'Madonna with child' or 'Virgin with child' you can find many options. The second child in many is often John the Baptist, or sometimes a child angel so you can add that as a search/request too.
We have two advent calendars. One is a candle (inspired by Grimm spiel holz advent spiral, but made by my husband), we light a new candle each day after dinner. I ordered red beeswax candles for this year. Also, last week we rolled candles and decorated those and some beeswax pillars with stockmar wax and clay cutters, it was very fun for both my kids (2 and 4). The second thing is each night during advent I hang a star in a window - paper stars one years, felt stars another, this year I bought wooden stars and we are going to pain them soon. Each day has a different color, Sunday stars are always gold and bigger than the rest of the week. Its fun and the kids like to see the new star every morning. We made lanterns last year too but that's not really "advent".
I wish you had the time (but understand why you of course dont) to sell your crafts and knitting on Etsy. or even sell clothes you have knit for your children that they have now outgrown on Ebay or Spots Corner. I would totally buy stuff from you :)
Oh goodness, so much loveliness! I really hope you get to attend your Heart of Advent event!
XOXOXO
If there is a Catholic bookstore in your area they often carry a variety of pictures including these two (various sizes, etc.).
Thank you, thank you everyone for helping me out with those prints AND for the wonderful Advent ideas! You're the best!!
