Birthday Crafting

There has been quite a bit of sewing going on in this house lately. Yep, when I decided to start letting go, it was the housework and laundry I let go of...at least for a short while. Creating is so much more fun than those things, wouldn't you agree?

One of K's classmates had a birthday recently and we were invited to her magical fairy party. Her Mama told me that her favorite colors were pink and blue so when I saw this fabric at the fabric store a couple of days later I just knew I had to make a skirt for her out of it. I used the Lazy Days skirt pattern from Oliver + S, which was the same pattern I used for K's hippie skirt.

Once the skirt was finished K and C were inspired to make gifts of their own, including a tissue paper angel and pipe cleaner creations. They collected some stones and things from nature to add to the gift, as well.

I especially love the card K created for her. The cover has a cake with six candles, a heart and their names...

and then the inside was a picture of them dancing around the May Faire pole.

She then decorated it with stickers while C ate some apples and watched. C wanted to wear a crown to pretend it was her birthday so she wore the one K made for Michaelmas last fall.

She was trying to hide from me and my camera which made K giggle hysterically.

Oh my silly little ham!

Speaking of birthdays, it seems that birthday season is upon us. A lot of K's friends seem to have summer birthdays. We have two parties to go to this weekend alone! Both are for boys which is new territory for me... any suggestions on presents we could make for them? I am thinking a skirt would be a no. Thanks for your help!

I made the same skirt last week. So much fun- to make and wear!

For a year, I made all the boys drawstring backpacks and put a small toy or book inside. That is a beautiful skirt! Definitely going on my list of things to make.

Any sort of "useful bag to put things in" is a hit with the boys around here! Pajama pants are great too (but you usually have to use a "girls" pattern since boy's patterns are few and far between and usually not so great), and they go together so quickly! You can always sew fun fabric patches onto a t-shirt to make a matching set. I use double sided fusible web (the sewable kind) to place them and then a narrow zig zag around the edges. Happy First Day of Summer!

How old are the boys? Art supplies are alway sppreciated (a bright rainbow set of play dough). We also like home made bubble solution in a mason jar with a home made bubble wand (wire and beads). My son loves coins and shiny rocks and shells. Seriously, a shiny gold $1 coin from the bank would send any kid off into happy land! Except for the skirts, boys like the same stuff girls do in many cases.
Blank books (felt or paper) with crayons or pencils, any sweet edibles, open ended dress up, felted comet ball, etc etc etc

Oh yes, and as others said -- BAGS!
That looks like a wonderful skirt to make, and so pretty and simple. I love letting go, especially of house work, and I am always in favor of more creating :).

Hmm..lots of ideas came to mind- treasure bag, t-shirt with a stencil/applique, blank books, fort making kit (thrifted sheet, some clothesline and pins), any sort of build-your-own kit (they have cheap but nice wooden ones at our local big box craft store), knitted/needle felted gnomes, art supplies, knitted drawstring bag and marbles, supplies to make their own little boat (sticks, string and fabric for a sail)...can you tell I have boys? ha ha. The skirt looks beautiful, btw! And I have always found that crafting balances me so it will always be high on the priority list for this mama :-)
My son would take a skirt so long as it's pink ;-). I want to make him a gnome catapult game ... I'm sure you can find links if you google it. Love the blue & pink skirt & join you in letting go of housework! Blessed Solstice to you all!!

One other suggestion for boys (girls too of course) is to make some tree blocks. We made some from fallen branches we found on a walk...a quick handsaw work, sandpaper and beeswax rub....presto.
My littlest one would love that skirt!

Love the skirt! For a little boy, a cape, a crown, a magic stick or wand, a book bag or nature treasure bag, a gnome doll, a jar of home-made play dough...

For my son's 6 year Bday I made him a crown out of felted wool sweaters, in a woodland theme. Then I cute and sanded a beautiful twig to be his wand. It was a hit!
