Gratitude Gifts & A Birth Story

Blogger was down this morning so I am only just getting around to posting this now. Sorry!

How do you show your feelings of immense gratitude and say thank you to someone who, without any notice, drops everything to watch over your dear little ones? How can you even begin?

Well friends, that is just what I am attempting to do. You see, we didn't really have things planned so well for Baby L's birth. After a lot of meditations on the birth and discussions with K's teachers, we decided that the girls would not attend. That was just our personal choice for our family, and every family is different and knows what is best for them. That meant we would need someone we felt extremely comfortable with to look after them while I was in labor. This was hard for us because we do not have any family nearby and, quite honestly, I didn't want to be a bother to anyone. We finally got up the nerve to ask our wonderful neighbors down the road (The wife runs a Waldorf daycare, the husband is the current 8th grade teacher at our school, and their children also attend our school), and we had some amazing people offer to do it, as well. It seemed like it would all work out ok. Back to midwife appointments and stressful 'non- stress' tests (why do they call them that when they just stress out the Mama-to-be?!). Baby L decided to stay in longer and longer.

Finally one weekend when I just couldn't take the stress any longer, I decided to try the tried and true method of inducing labor - taking a dog for a walk. (Walking Nara on a hot Virginia day induced labor with my stubborn C) We went to downtown Portland with my Paw Paw and explored the city. We even stopped by Voodoo Doughnuts as a special treat. We drove home after that and I felt nothing so I thought maybe this time around it didn't work. Then we walked through the door and my water broke. My labor with K was 10 hours total and C was 5 hours total so I was a bit nervous he would come really fast. We were about to call our neighbor when I realized there was a Waldorf teacher training workshop going on in Washington that weekend and all of our local teachers were there. Oh no!!! Everyone we had set up to watch the girls was a teacher, now what?!

Amidst the panicking, hungry girls and contractions, Kevin thought to call a family we really love and admire, a family with the sweetest little girl around that my girls love, a family that I consider to be the truest of friends, a family we could 100% trust with our precious ones... Yep, that smart man of mine called them. They said yes without hesitation. We gathered up the girls pajamas and special bags we had packed weeks before and hopped in the van. Even though by this time my contractions were only 2 minutes apart I went along for the ride. I don't remember much about dropping them off now, it's all such a blur as this was the point when my contractions became more and more intense, but I do remember the warmth I felt as soon as we walked through their front door. It just felt so safe and perfect, like this is where they were meant to spend my time in labor all along. My girls left me and ran to play with their friend not caring that we were leaving. Even my super attached koala bear C had no problems letting go. I remember writing down my contractions as we were talking and my friend's comforting hug...

Anyways, I didn't mean to go into a mini birth story there but I thought you should have a little bit of background to see just how thoughtful and caring that sweet family is, and how indebted we are to them.

Ever since Baby L's birth I have been searching and searching for a way to thank them. It needed to be just right. Then one day at one of our play dates their little girl fell in love with K and C's bonnets. That's when it hit me, this would be a perfect way to show our gratitude - sew her a bonnet! They are as much into Laura Ingalls Wilder as us and have a deep appreciation of all things handmade.

So I got to work. She expressed that she liked the cherry fabric I used for K's bonnet. I made that bonnet about 2 years ago when we traveled the Oregon Trail so I couldn't find that fabric anywhere. Then I remembered we had a tablecloth I made, but never used for the girls' table, out of that fabric.
I dug it out of one of my boxes and got to work.

She liked red or pink with the fabric so I removed the aqua rick-rack and sewed it up.

K modeling the bonnet

Then I still had fabric leftover so I made her a matching skirt to go with it.

We gave them their gifts and I think they like them. She put then on and wore them that day. BUT this is only the beginning of showing our gratitude. There is still more I would love to do for all of them. I would love to hear any suggestions you may have.

Well, that ended up being a lot longer than planned. Thanks for reading. I hope it wasn't too much.
Oh and for the record - we still don't know if it was the dog walking or the doughnuts that did it...

See you in this space tomorrow for another fun giveaway!

Peek-A-Boo Knitting

Enjoying some knitting at Walnut Hill with my silly baby.

These pics are actually from last Friday, but I had to share them. The Shalom is finished, but I have yet to get pictures. I will try to work on that ASAP! I was hoping to get Kevin to take them but the lens on my camera has a slight learning curve (it is also in need of repair due to focusing issues, which makes it more difficult to use right now) and it can be hard for him to use it. I'll figure it out one way or another.
I have just a couple of projects I am working on right now, but again no pics of them. Grandma (Kevin's Mama) is in town right now so we have been enjoying her visit.
What am I still doing awake right now?!

What are all of you working on?
Happy creating!

I am not sure what is going on with Blogger, again, but there seems to be issues with the format and commenting right now. I can't respond nor see your comments (but do get the e-mails for them). Is it just me or are you guys seeing this issue on here, as well?

Boat Making and Birthday Gifts {Tutorial}

Last weekend was our big birthday party weekend, and, oh my, did we have fun! One of the parties was a 'Birthday Boat Building Bonanza' and it was held at the beautiful Audubon Society of Portland Park. All of the children were given the supplies and tools to build their own boats. Then they went on a scavenger hunt through the woods to find things to decorate their boats with. Such a brilliant idea, wouldn't you agree?!

K had so much fun decorating hers. She even decided that her crayons needed to be glued to the boat. C had Kevin and I decorate hers (mostly because she was still enjoying her nature walk when it was time to decorate).

After they were all decorated, and everyone enjoyed birthday cake, they all set out to sail their boats in the pond a little ways into the woods.
I was too slow to get any pics of K launching her boat. I wasn't thinking when I got dressed that day. Flip flops and nature hikes do not go well together.

Then all the children decided it would be more fun to launch them in the nearby stream and get in the water themselves. They watched as their boats sailed down the stream sending them into frenzies of excitement.

Thank goodness for Daddy's strong hand to hold on to and help navigate the way back up the stream.
Such a perfect day.

I wanted to thank all of you, again, for your ideas and advice on the boys' birthday gifts. You had so many great ideas it was a really hard decision. In the end we decided to make them felted rocks (one of the boys had a rock collection so it seemed like the perfect thing) and some homemade play dough. Both of the girls were really happy that they created the gifts themselves.

I thought I would share our favorite homemade play dough recipe. It was given to us by one of K's ever resourceful teachers. We will someday try this with some natural dyes added, but honestly, I am really enjoying the simplicity of the natural colored play dough.

• 2 Tbsp cooking oil
• 2 Tbsp cream of tartar
• ½ cup salt
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup flour (we buy the cheapest white flour for this, as our money is tight right now but I would rather us use organic)

Mix the flour, cream of tartar, and salt in a pot. Then add water and oil to dry mixture. Cook over medium heat until thick. Knead as it cools and store in an airtight container. We like to use a canning jar.

Enjoy!

P.S. We started adding a few drop of lavender essential oil to our playdough. It helps calm my children down as well as smell nice!

Meg's sweet baby Lachlan had another surgery yesterday (I meant to post about it then... I apologize!). If you could please stop by her blog and send them some love and well wishes, I am sure they would be greatly appreciated. Meg and I were pregnant with our little L babies (hee, hee) at the same time and gave birth the same month. I can't help but think of her and Lachlan whenever I look at my baby L. I can only imagine what she is going through with all of this as I could barely handle my baby L's MRI, but both her and Lachlan are so very strong. I am continuing to keep them in my prayers and I hope you can, as well. Thanks!

If You Give a Dog a Pancake

S/He will want to join you for breakfast...

and steal your bread from the table

Maybe even sit in your chair if you get up for just a second.

*sigh* This is why our dogs are not invited to meals in our home. Those rascals.

On another note I wanted to share this beautiful post from Amanda on photography and, for goodness sake, not using Photoshop or other photo editing software. Please do check it out, and I hope it will inspire you as it did me. I sometimes feel like those of us not using Photoshop are an endangered breed going into extinction. It feels so good to know there are others out there. Thanks Amanda!

Also on a slightly similar subject. Did you all see the beautiful comment left by Carrie on Friday's post?

"Those are really precious pictures, but I empathize with this mirror your daughter has held up for you. My daughters can tell when I'm trying to capture *them* in a photograph, and when I'm trying to capture *the* photograph. When it's the latter, they squirrel up their noses, and make sour faces, and turn their backs. They know that I'm more focused on getting a nice picture, and not paying attention to the child on the other side of the lens."

Such wisdom in her words, wouldn't you agree? Thank you Carrie for your insight.

I hope you are all having a beautiful start to your week. See you in this space tomorrow.

Little Mama

"Baby L, please hold still"

"Mama, he won't hold still"

Moving in for a close up - could she get any closer?!

Oh my silly little C! It was such a sweet moment but also a wake up call for me. It really made me realize I need to be a bit more respectful of all of my little ones' space and not always have my camera in their faces. Once again, my greatest teachers are my children.

In case you missed it, The LittleWool giveaway winner was announced last night here. A big THANK YOU to Karen of LittleWool for the giveaway and to all of you that entered.

Princess and the Pea : Part Two

I was going to wait and post these pictures after I re-did my blog template to have larger photos but I just couldn't wait that long. For some reason when the blog shrinks my large pictures it messes with them and makes them not as defined, and my bokeh just ends up looking blurry. I don't get it. This really frustrates me, sigh, I will get past it once I have the time to re-do the template. So anyways, please forgive these silly things and let's move on.

I did it FINALLY! Thank you Heather and everyone who helped me. I mostly have it now, although my pics are posting square shaped so something is still not quite right but I am getting there.

Remember that bag I made for K's Princess and the Pea set? Well, the rest of that fabric was just sitting on my shelf getting dusty and covered in fur (it's just a fact of life with 7 animals in the house). It was only 1 yard with a big square cut out of it so I didn't know what I could possibly ever make out of it. Then, after giving up (for now) on my Flower Girl dress from Weekend Sewing, I came across another pattern in the book that called for a yard of fabric - the smocked sundress. Thankfully there were no errors for me to figure out in this one. The pattern only goes up to a size 4 but since my K is a little string bean I figured it would work.. and it did!

This was my first time ever using elastic thread and trying smocking. I am officially sold on the process and result. I love the way it came out. K does wish it had a bit of a fuller skirt so it would twirl more when she danced, but other than that, she is really happy with it.

When K put on this dress it inspired her to go outside and run and play like crazy. She told me she was pretending to be a princess.

Apparently princesses like to swing in tire swings a lot.

I really enjoy the print on this airy cotton gauze fabric. If only we had more from this line. Then again, I bought this fabric back when I used my credit card way too often and bought way too many things we really couldn't afford. So I will be grateful and savor this bit that we do have.

I love K's hair styles

The other day, K discovered that her Harvest Festival/Martinmas sweater I knit her last fall matches quite well with her new dress. She of course had to show it off to me, and that of course, made C want to wear hers, too. I don't think I ever posted these projects so Rav notes here and here.

Now I am wondering what other uses I will find for my stash of 1 yard length fabrics. I suppose I should get back to working on C's horse dress first, though.

Bandwagon Booties

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions in yesterday's post. I love them all. Now to decide...

I gave in and jumped on the bandwagon that Amanda started by knitting these booties. They looked so cute I figured I had to try them out, plus baby L was outgrowing all of his other booties I knit him so it was perfect timing.

I was hoping to call on the warmer weather by knitting these in organic cotton instead of wool. My thermostat was the warmest it has been since last July, yesterday, reading 73 degrees so maybe it's working. I used some old stash yarn so I am uncertain of who made it, but I can tell you it's so very soft and squishy.

Baby L just turned four months on Sunday, I know, I can't believe it either, so I skipped the 3 months size and chose to knit them in the 6 months size, instead. They were incredibly fast and easy to make. I modified the pattern by doing KFB instead of the YFWD, and I think it works much better. Rav notes here.

I also made a key modification to making these booties work, at least for baby L: elastic. These booties would not stay on at all so I measured his little chubby ankle and calf, split the difference and cut thin elastic that length. Then I hand sewed the elastic into a circle and slipped it onto the booty, placing it right where you fold the cuff down (see pic below). I then hand sewed it in place with just a couple of stitches on the seam. Presto! Instant stay on booties with secret elastic. We are loving them and I may make one more pair to get us through the summer, if I don't get distracted by other projects, that is.

Like, oh I don't know, projects from this book. So many of them are calling my name, well, baby L's name. I love, love, love our local library. It gets in every knitting book I could ever wish for. The downside to that is my knitting list just keeps growing and growing. There just isn't enough time in the day!

I'm also contemplating using some of my favorite stash fabric to make some much needed curtains in our dining room. The verdict is still out on this one.

And for my Shalom KAL update, may I present - a sleeve! Phew, I am nearing the final lap on this sweater. I am hoping to finish it this week so I can wear it on our day trip to Tillamook this weekend. Fingers crossed I can do it.
