Angel of Mine, Watch Over Me...
An angel in K's room
"The realization that we as human beings continue the work of the angels, the archangels, and even higher spiritual beings can fill us with awe and inspire a feeling of gratitude." WECAN - The World of the Young Child
You may have heard of the importance of angels in Waldorf philosophy. This is one of the things I instantly fell in love with. There are many different rolls and aspects of angels in a child's life. In Rahima Baldwin Dancy's lectures you will often hear her refer to your child's angel "Also, try taking your question into your sleep: make a mental picture of your daughter as you see and love her, and then give over this situation to her angel, asking for inspiration".
It is believed that children see angels and sense otherworldly presences until about the age of seven, and that we all have our own angel. K has really taken this to heart. She seemed to already know about angels before I started telling her about them (a couple of years ago after my dear friend lost her husband in a car accident). I can still remember a day in November when she saw C sleeping in my lap and she said that I must be her guardian angel watching over her.
It seems that at least one conversation a day is centered around angels in one way or another. Sometimes it's about her specific angel, or maybe C's angel and other times it's just about angels in general. Some days she even likes to dress up like an angel and play her lyre. Oh yes, my sweet little K has a love of angels.
Angel shelf in K's room
It seemed only fitting to have angels in K's room (and pretty much everywhere else in our house), and wouldn't you know that her two bedtime songs she requests are angel ones! She has both of the songs memorized now. Both are from Mary Thienes-Schunemann, and are as follows:
Angel of mine, watch over me
Guide my work, to the good deed
May I be one who will work with my hands
Angel of mine, watch over me.
All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord
All night, all day, angels watching over me
When at night I go to sleep, angels watching over me, my Lord
Pray the Lord my soul to keep, angels watching over me.

The absolute best moment of each day comes at night when K sings these two songs to C before bed. The sweetness and sincerity in her eyes and her voice as she sings would melt any one's heart.
Oh yes, my K deeply believes in angels, and I am so blessed to have her in my life to teach me to believe as well.

so interesting as xi is all about angels and fairies. lola used to be but now is moving away from really believing in their actual existence and starting to believe they are more in our minds. *sigh* she's over 7 now of course, so fits right in with the waldorf idea of age in this regard. she told me the other day that she knows xi doesn't really see angels and fairies, nor does she really travel to china or mexico (xi's favorite destinations apparently), but she won't say anythign because she also knows that it's fun for xi to believe it all..haha
love your pictures and all your angels. you put my house to shame girl!
xoxoxoxo
Children are wonderful that way, for reminding us that they're are angels all around us. Beautiful post!
XOXOXOXO
(It's about all I can say, I love every single word you wrote.)
Such lovely items you have added to your home. Angels are a wonderful creation from God. Created long before we were, and able to live right in the presence of God. Nothing they do is without His permission, as they are subject to His authority. Awesome to think about. Blessings, Melissa
What a beautiful shelf Nicole! And all those dreamy angels. Thanks for reminding me how important they are in our little ones life. Ella attended a Waldorf preschool and when she went she seemed really in touch with the angels - I need to nurture this in her once again.
What a helpful and beautiful post.

My daughter loves the "Angels watching over me" song as well. I love that collection of lullabies. I will have to try to find the other song! Which CD of hers is it on?
Your post melted my heart, Nicole- and brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for your sweetness!
Wonderful post. Love all of your beautiful angels!
I'm so inspired to see the images of your home...they just evoke such peace...and the angels certainly add to that! My daughter has really started her spiritual searching as of late...after reading this and the Magic Onion post from Wed, I see that I really need to take the time to nurture this side of her.
Beautiful post!

beautiful! i love the angel shelf in her room and that gorgeous angel at the top of the post.
i love that you are nurturing this intrinsic beauty inside your sweet girls. :)
Thank you, thank you everyone. I was afraid I was perhaps digging too deeply into our Waldorf life with this post so thank you for your support and kind words. It's nice to know I can share more than just the outer layer of the Waldorf philosophy (such as the toys, hand work, natural clothes and crafts). Thanks again!
XO
I forgot to mention - Angel of Mine is from ' This is the way we wash - a - day'. HTH!

I have to ask where you got the shelf and the angel picture---so beautiful! Thanks! Holly
Neptune, thank you so much for saying that. I always hesitate to post these kinds of things so that is very encouraging to read!
Christine, thank you. They really do, don't they?!
Holly, I found the shelf on Etsy. I forgot the seller but I found it by searching 'wood branch shelf'. The picture was from my friend Shelley (www.waldorfmama.com) but it's available here: http://www.threesisterstoys.com/p-954-guardian-angel-card.aspx
