Oy vey, it looks like I am going to be spending my evening trying to find a decent photo for our Christmas cards - as you can see my yearly attempt to capture them all looking at the camera at the same time didn't go as planned. Eh, who am I kidding it is pretty impossible! Thankfully candids work pretty nicely. Wish me luck. I am going to need it.
I have a new rhythm post in the works. I just have to find a solid chunk of time to be able to type all my thoughts up without interruptions. I might need some luck on that one, too!
p.s. - Think anyone would notice if we just reused last year's photo?

As someone who always takes my own family pictures for Christmas cards (I have five kids and I prefer pictures of the whole family- so that means me and hubby are included) the one tip I have for you that I always use is to set the camera timer to take 10 pictures at once. When I do this (I ALWAYS do this for family pictures) I will take three attempts or so and then have 30 pictures to choose from. Usually by either the first one or two or last photo in each attempt everyone is looking and/or not blinking.
Also, I am not above giving a gummy bear or tiny treat to my toddlers. NOT chocolate- that makes a mess around the mouth. Not lollipops, unless you want the stick showing. But usually, a little something distracts him long enough to get him at least looking at you with a content look on his face.
:-)
All of this said, knowing you are a photographer yourself- all your photos are always gorgeous.

Sometimes perfect smiles are overrated and candid is best!
