These are a few of our favorite things...

K's horse diffuser
L's favorite blocks
Pionner homestead drying rack (Advent clearing and cleaning)
St. Therese paper dolls from Saint Nicholas

An updated version from last year of our favorite gifts to include some of our favorite baby gifts amongst other things.

I have had quite a few emails lately asking me for gift ideas. It seemed like a big enough request that I should go ahead and do a post with some ideas I have. Honestly, I don't have a lot, but I hope it is somewhat helpful to you! All of the gifts I am listing are things my family and I truly love and get lots of use from. Some of the links are Amazon affiliate links which means that if you choose to make a purchase, you are being a blessing to us as we will receive a small percentage of the sale. All of these proceeds made help out our family with homeschooling, or other extremely meaningful teachings that my children would not have otherwise. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support.

- Baby F loves playing with these baby blocks. We have had them since K was a baby. All of my children received sheepskins or as we call them "lambies" as babies for sleeping on and later for play. C even used her up until she was about three or four. The ones we have are no longer available but the one I linked too seems very similar. I also made sure to get each one of my babies a teething necklace shortly after they were born. They seem to help with teething pain. All of our children wore these wool overalls as babies and they continue to be one of my favorite cozy wears for Baby F. In fact he is getting a new pair this year for Christmas. I usually pair them with some cozy hand knit booties and a wool long sleeve shirt. As you can see I tend to be more practical with baby gifts. Perhaps because K received so many toys as a baby and we have no need for more. 😊

- If you know anyone who loves fermenting or wants to try it out I suggest the book Fermented Vegetables. We devour everything I make from this book and have some cranberries fermenting on the counter for Christmas. To go along with it I would suggest some canning jars, and this set to start out with. Another fermentation idea is some water kefir grains. We use simple canning jars for the ferment and then these bottles to make it bubbly afterwards.

- This Christmas K will be receiving her own pocket knife. I want her to learn how to work with knives safely and feel it is an important life skill that will greatly benefit her.

-For anyone young or old I can't say enough good things about good quality essential oils and a diffuser. The one you see pictured above is K's special horse diffuser we got her for her birthday this year along with a few of her own essential oils. Just please remember to exercise caution with all essential oils and really research before using them, especially around children.

- We all enjoy playing Wildcraft as a family. It's fun enough to entertain everyone while teaching us all about the uses for many common herbs at the same time. K is receiving Bananagrams as a gift this year and L is receiving Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel. Our friends in Oregon had these games and my children had a blast playing them. C will be getting Shut the Box. She played this at a local event and didn't want to stop. Other games that my children enjoy are: Bird Bingo,
Auf Dem Lande (it appears to be unavailable on Amazon right now but you might be able to find it elsewhere reasonably priced), Harvest Time, and Birds of Summer.

- My girls can not get enough of their St. Therese and Her Family Paper Dolls that St. Nicholas brought them. There are so many dolls and outfits in that book that he actually split them up and they received half of them last year and the other half this year. I laminated them all to keep them safe from younger siblings (K still recalls an incident with two year old C biting the heads off of her Little House paper dolls).

- Little L will tell you that, hands down, his favorite toy (besides his beloved shark stuffed animals) is his set of interlocking blocks. I highly suggest the set of 92 over the smaller set for more building options (and especially if you have more than one child. The girls are always stealing his blocks building with him). In fact, he loves them so much my Mom gave him an additional set last year for Christmas. He also has a new found love for wooden trains tracks and trains.

- We bought K a Skuut wooden balance bike when she was around 2 years old and it has lasted  through the rough riding of all three of my children (each of them riding it for about three years, from age two to age five when we get them a regular bike with pedals).  It's still in good enough shape that it will be passed down to our next baby, too! My children have all been able to transition to big bikes without training wheels thanks to using the Skuut first.

- Safe, good quality art supplies are very important to our family. They encourage endless artistic expressions. Giving children lesser quality supplies only leads to frustration when they can not create what they are envisioning in their heads due to what they are using. Not only that, the good quality supplies last longer. We have had the same sets of Stockmar block crayons and stick crayons since K was a toddler and they are still going strong. I did, however, purchase both of the girls special sets for homeschooling just to keep them nicer and out of L's hands. We use Stockmar paint for all of our painting (and I also used it when I lazured the girls' bedroom walls back in Oregon). Stockmar modeling beeswax is a staple in our homeschooling as well as one of C's favorite things to play with. For colored pencils, we prefer Lyra triangular giants. Their colors and blending capabilities are spectacular and their triangular shape promotes proper grip.

- Speaking of artistic endeavors, both C and K love to needlefelt and wet felt with wool. This kit from Nova is a great starter kit for children (or even adults!).

- Hanna Andersson organic pajamas are a favorite amongst all my children. I used to buy them at their outlet store in Oregon but now I just wait for the good sales. These are the only pajamas that can hold up to my children's rough wear and even be passed down to the next sibling (baby F is wearing pajamas that all three of it's older siblings wore!). We have tried other pajamas here and there but they can never hold up for more than a couple of months.

- Last year my children all received these breakfast boards for Christmas. They use them everyday and love caring for them with hand washing and monthly beeswaxing.

- Words can not say how much I love my Pioneer drying rack. Before I had this I was using cheap, poor quality metal drying racks that would rust or break within months of use. Not only that but they were never big enough to hold all that I needed to dry. I was constantly replacing them (and the clothing they ruined). But the Pioneer is the perfect size for my growing family and such good quality that I think I will be passing it down to my children in the future.

- The Oh She Glows Cookbook is by far my favorite cookbook. I have had it a couple of years now and I still use the recipes in it on almost a daily basis. Her new book is just as amazing, too!

-  My whole family uses Klean Kanteen water bottles on a daily basis (I even bought one for my Mom). We use different sizes, depending on the person, from the sippy cup up to the 40 oz bottle. We stick with the simple brushed stainless instead of the painted ones because I have found that the paint eventually chips off of those ones.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else. If you are looking for age specific suggestions and or have any questions - ask away!

Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post i on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

I cast on another Cascade sweater. The one I knit for Little L so many years ago didn't last to pass down to Baby F. That is okay - it gave me an excuse to use some of dear Ginny's beautiful yarn. Don't you love my stitch markers? I was stuck under a sleeping baby so I had to use whatever I had nearby.

What are you working on? Happy creating!

Surprise! {and the first light of Advent}

thankful tree leaves waiting
full of gratitude
gratitude gratitude I think we need a bigger table He adores her piano practice bowling bowling wiggle worm singing pretending to play sweet moment dragon slide for his shark :D love these guys! first Sunday of Advent RE class L's Advent wreath from RE We have so much to be thankful for, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Well, perhaps with that surprise I mentioned last week. My children's dearest friends from Oregon (mine, too!) came out for a surprise visit for Thanksgiving break. Man that was a hard secret to keep! I nearly spilled the beans quite a few times. I thought I pulled it off but it turned out that K saw a couple of messages on my phone and figured it out. She then told C but they didn't tell Little L because they knew he just can't keep a secret. So at least he was surprised! Either way they were all reunited and so full of joy.

We celebrated the first Sunday of Advent today. I was a bit exhausted and even though I prepared weeks ago and had an amazing Advent prep get together with some incredible Catholic homeschooling mamas, I still fell behind. Our candles are out and were lit at dinnertime but we have yet to take our Advent wreath gathering walk and make our wreath. Maybe tomorrow. One day at a time. Isn't Advent about patience and preparation after all?

KCCO - sneak peek Hopping one for a second to share a sneak peek at something I am working on. It isn't knitting or sewing or any of my usual go-to crafts but it is bringing me peace. Now if you will excuse me, I need to get back to sneaking around the house and doing my best muwahahaha laugh (in my head) as I prepare for a very big surprise for my children this week. I can't wait!!

Out of the fog

out of the fog coming out of the fog coming out of the fog (with a homemade pumpkin spice latte) I am slowly coming out of the fog that took over last week. I was hit hard with the flu and it kept me down for a couple of days. Mamas are not supposed to get sick - isn't that some written law somewhere?! We don't have time for these silly set backs. I haven't had the flu since I was a child and I honestly forgot how rough it is. Perhaps this was to develop my empathy a bit further for the next time my children or Kevin get sick. Well, consider it duly noted. This also reminded I need to work on taking better care of myself. I had been staying up far too late and trying to accomplish far more than I am capable of, wearing my immune system thin. Learn from me and please do take good care!

p.s. - To the woman who came over to me after Mass today, pointing to each one of my children, counting aloud as you gave a sweet but astonished look when you exclaimed, "Four!" and then turned to me and said, "You look far too young to have a child that old (nodding to K), let alone four children!" - Thank you! Your words were just what this ancient feeling, worn mama needed.

I finished up C's Christmas gift minus the buttons. Now I really should be doing more Christmas knitting but decided instead to work a few rows on my socks. I am actually at quite a loss with the children's gifts this year. I just can't think of what to make/get for them. Perhaps that is why I am mindlessly working on socks instead.

Oh, and Joy. That oil has been my saving grace these past few days. I have been diffusing it so much I think you can actually smell it on me when I leave the house. I suppose that is not a bad thing, I think we could all use a bit more joy in our lives.

Just Baby and Me

LOVING this book I'll take that, thank you water kefir grains elderberry kefir "soda" fermenting tomatoes pickled garlic Pickled garlic that later turned to this: pickled garlic photography contest prize - wool socks! little cutie i think we need some bigger pants I think it is high time to knit some bigger pants for his cloth diapers! a little laundry room fun
Last Friday was the very first Martinmas in about nine years that we didn't celebrate. As sad as that seems, there was a good reason - the children went camping with Daddy for the three day weekend. We'll make up for it and do our usual Martinmas activities later this week.

Baby F and I stayed home this trip as it was too cold for him to camp up in the mountains. I had the greatest of intentions to just relax while they were gone but I can't seem to ever just sit still. It drives me crazy so I ended up cleaning the house and experimenting in the kitchen instead. Well, I did steal a few moments here and there to read more of The Genius of Birds. This book has me absolutely captivated. Our librarian recommended it to me and I am so glad she did. I just need to hurry and finish it now so she can read it, too!

Of course there was a lot of playtime with Baby F, too. I can't get over how quiet he is when his siblings aren't around. I was wondering why he was such a loud baby and then it occurred to me that he just wants to make sure his voice is heard along with everyone else. I don't blame him!

We (as in I did the work and he supervised from his baby carrier) made a fresh batch of elderberry syrup. Feeling inspired by the goodness of elderberries I decided to experiment and make elderberry water kefir "soda". Oh.my. I am so glad I did. It may be my most favorite flavor yet. Then we gathered our not yet ripe cherry and pear tomatoes from the garden and made some fermented tomato bombs from this book. We're patiently waiting and staring at them on the counter now. It is always so hard to wait for ferments to be ready. I can't wait to dive into them. Our kitchen experiments didn't end there. We also started up a batch of pickled garlic from this book. I panicked a bit when two days later my garlic started turning a blueish-green color, but thankfully a friend showed me why it happens and that they are still good. Phew!

I tried playing a bit of laundry catch-up while there were only two of us making messes. This included hand washing some woolies. I soaked some new wool socks in conditioner in the hope of making them a bit less scratchy. Those socks were actually a prize Kevin and I won. I didn't know it but he entered one of my photographs of the dogs pulling our three oldest on a sled in a dog sledding photography contest. To our surprise it took first place. He laughed when he saw the prize was wool socks. Even though he entered he decided to let me have them. I am sure you know that made this wool loving knitter's day.

Everyone is back home now smelling of the campfire and full of stories of their adventures. Baby F and I missed them all so much but were glad for our time alone together. I think we all need that extended one on one time with each of our little ones when we can get it. Don't you agree?

Our future

my boys <3 love that sweet fuzzy hair I so love his fuzzy baby hair waking up baby love peek a boo

I believe peace begins at home. With the state our country is in today, so divided and angry, I look to my children, the future of this country, with hope. Mamas, go love your little ones, show them the world is good. I pray we can move forward, love another, show empathy, and accept our differences with kindness.

love,
Nicole

pumpkin p.s. - I couldn't post this without a photo of my girls, too! Surprisingly I don't have any new ones since my last post so this will have to due.

Christmas knitting has begun. This is a gift for C. She requested a new Phoebe sweater for her Phoebe doll to match the one I made her for her birthday a couple of years back. I had just enough yarn left for the project - perfect!  The book is one of our all time favs and it makes me so happy to see that C still treasures the Phoebe I knit her.

On another note - The children and I are spending the week making handmade gifts to go into the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We only have a week to complete the gifts (I was just informed of this tonight at their AHG meeting) so I need some fast gift ideas. I was thinking some simple hand sewn dolls maybe and that is as far as I got. Do you have any suggestions? I could really use them! I would love for it to be something special but easy for the girls to make, too.

I do so love that beautiful autumn glow that appears at the end of October. It is so warm and clear. Truly one of my favorite times to carry around my camera. I think I am going to let the photographs do the talking since I am still recovering from our crazy week. Oh but I should say a little something about L's Halloween costume - no, he wasn't miserable like he looks in the photograph. He wanted to be a snowman and when he saw this snowman costume (which is from the movie Frozen) he decided it was perfect.  He called himself the little funny snowman. But when we went trick or treating everyone called him Olaf and quoted the movie Frozen to him. He had no clue what they were talking about and got very frustrated that they didn't realize he was a snowman. Oops. We won't make that mistake again! The girls also thought it was funny that everyone was trying to say they were Disney princesses. K was a Greek goddess and C was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Note to self for next year - Halloween is now sponsored by Disney. Ha!

p.s. - Their pumpkin hats can be found on rav here and Little L's TAMA sweater can be found here.
