Here we go again

hot tea for little l sweet baby gifts strawberry popcorn from our garden strawberry popcorn from our garden C in AHG award ceremony K in AHG award ceremony K in AHG award ceremony she thinks she is hiding i think i need a new blocking system nursing shawl nursing shawl IMG_3559 nursing shawl nursing shawl

We made our first batch of popcorn from the strawberry popcorn we grew in our garden last summer. It's really delicious! The kernels are smaller than regular popcorn but full of so much flavor. I am wishing we had space to grow more. Maybe our next house will. In the meantime K wants to grow some sweet corn so she can snack on it right out of the garden.

I found it rather ironic that some of my prized vintage Pyrex is in the strawberry popcorn photos. You may have seen what I posted on the Facebook page on Saturday about vintage Pyrex containing high levels of lead (inside and outside each piece!). My first reaction was denial. No, it can't be! I admit I am attached to them. Pyrex was what we switched over to when we rid our house of plastic many, many years ago. But then rational thought came back over me. I know all too well the dangers of lead, as my K had high lead levels as a toddler (before our Pyrex days, though), and it is not something I will play with.

So here we go again, back to the drawing board of what to store and bake our food in - mixing bowls, too! I am thankful now that I bought a large set of All Clad stainless steel pots and pans years before I even met Kevin, so I at least have safe cooking ware. I was working part-time at Williams Sonoma then and loved using my employee discount. How on earth I managed a full-time job, full-time college and a part-time job at the time blows my mind. I can't even imagine it now. But that's another topic. Back to the matter at hand - I think I am going to look into some cast iron bake ware for our oven needs. I am researching enamel cast iron, too. We use mason jars for some food storage in the fridge but I need to find something larger for other leftovers. I would love to hear your thoughts on what you use and why. Maybe we can all help each other have safer kitchens and homes.

As for the Pyrex, it will sit high up on top of our kitchen cupboards for now. I do still love the way it looks...

Did you see those sweet little baby gifts in the photos above? *swoon* My talented friend Jackie thoughtfully surprised us with those. They brought tears to my eyes. I was just thinking about the fact that we don't really know anyone here and that this sweet baby boy won't be celebrated like his siblings were when we were surrounded by loving friends and community. Jackie reminded me otherwise. Thank you!!!

Speaking of our baby boy, I finished my nursing shawl over the weekend. I love how it turned out. Oh my did it grow! I was nervous that it would be too small but I think it came out just right. As soon as it was dry we ran outside behind our house to snap some photographs. It was pretty dark that day but I thought we could still make it work. One thing I didn't take into account was the crazy wind.  The shawl and my skirt were blowing all over the place. Oh well. We'll get better photos when the baby is actually here.

I think I am going to beg for request some blocking wires for my birthday or Christmas this year. I think that would be much better for future knits (and even to re-block this one). My sewing pin method seen above took a good 45 minutes to block with and the edge isn't as neat as I would like it to be, but sometimes we just have to make do, right?

This is actually my first time using some sort of nursing cover so we'll see how it goes. I am pretty discreet with my nursing in the first place but I thought this shawl might be helpful for church. I just want to make sure I am respectful, especially since this is a small church in a small town. I have never nursed a baby in church before as I didn't join the Catholic church until Little L was a toddler and not needing to nurse as often. This is a whole new territory for me.

Rav notes here.

Anchor hocking company glassware is made in the US and is lead free. Bormiolli is also a lead free choice. New Pyrex is also lead free and you can get ones with lids that are BPA free. Ball jars are lead free but the lids have a little BPA in them.
I Have friends who swear by pampered chef stoneware. We use glass Pyrex and anchor glass items as well.
Your shawl is beautiful! I much prefer shawls for covers than one of those apron contraptions. Do you use a sling or other carrier? I use ring slings and wraps, and they are like built in nursing covers. For church I usually use a ring sling, and then just loosen it to nurse and use it as a light cover.

All your baby prep is giving me baby fever and I already have a seven month old! All four of mine have been born in the summer, so I've never gotten to do much newborn knitting.

Yes! I actually am trying out a wrap for when he is a little baby and then plan on switching over to our tried and true Ergo or Tula. I haven't had luck nursing in them, though. I totally hear you on the baby fever. I didn't know it was possible but all this nesting and excitement has me wishing/praying for another baby after this guy and he isn't even here yet!!
Have you tested any of your stuff yet? I have a bunch of the turquoise stuff like yours and I have some with mushrooms on it, is it all bad?

I haven't tested any of them yet (I just discovered this yesterday) but hope to get a kit to do so. From my understanding though, all the vintage Pyrex, whatever the pattern or color has the high amounts of lead :( Maybe check here: http://leadsafeamerica.org/
i have tested the turquoise "amish" pyrex we had with swabs and they turned bright red. :(
Love the shawl, am wondering about your skirt --did you make it ? Is it yoga top? I really like it and am looking for easy, long skirts. Thank you for any info you might can give. I always tend to like your clothing, and of course, the things you make for your children.

Oh my, thank you!! I always feel so frumpy and that I don't pay enough attention to my clothing. The skirt is actually just a maxi skirt I bought from Target a year or two ago. It's loose and comfy enough that I can still wear it while pregnant, although I caught it on our little garden fence so it has a big hole now and has become an at home skirt. :(
I have been using glaslock containers for years. I bought them at bed bath and beyond and they are my favorites. The container and lid are both glass and there is a rubber seal with plastic snaps to hold the lid on, but that doesn't touch the food. I think I saw some similar ones made by Martha Stewart, but I don't have any of those. Love the shawl too!

Oh those sound nice! I have some with glass lids but they don't snap into place and the lids ends up falling off in the fridge.
Gorgeous shawl! I could never really deal with nursing covers. I tried for a few months with my first baby, and about three days with the second baby. Also, just wanted to share/remind everyone Pope Francis's support for public breastfeeding - http://time.com/3662983/pope-francis-breastfeedin... . Not that that makes nursing in public a non-issue, but it just warmed my heart and made me feel a bit more confident that I was doing the right thing.

Agreed! And for inspiration, here's a collection of art: https://churchpop.com/2014/08/10/31-beautiful-pai...
oh yes! Thank you for sharing that. I remember reading it before but forgot all about it <3
Goodness, I have been a closet reader for YEARS! Before your little boy was born. I haven't been keeping up-to-date on my blog reading so surprise, surprise for me when I saw K getting AHG awards! Yay! I have both my girls in AHG. We've done it for 4 years and lot it! Welcome to the family!

Oh how wonderful! We just joined last fall and really love it. It's been such a wonderful thing for the girls. L is excited that he gets to join the boys next year :)
Thanks for sharing the info on the Pyrex. I was unaware of it and will look into it further. My favorite coffee cup may have to go :(

Beautiful shawl. I'm curious if your church has a nursery at all? Ours has one in the back with a window and speakers so mothers can have some bit of privacy but still care for the littles. It was a great help when our daughter was young.

We do have a cry room but I like to try to stay in and sit towards the front if I can. We'll see how it goes! :)
Ok so I had to I had to go look in my kitchen to see what I use for what lol. I use Corningware, Allclad, cast iron, and stoneware for baking and cooking. For refrigerator storage I use glass lock and for the freezer I use pint canning jars. For mixing I use regular glass and metal mixing bowls. I also have several uncoated metal loaf and muffin pans for baking. Most of the stuff I found at goodwill some were ordered here and there or gifted during holidays, its all pretty hodge podge. My main rule is no coating and no plastic when it would be exposed to extreme heat changes like the freezer and the oven/stove/microwave.
I'm looking at getting these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XJDT95C/ref=s...

Just going to spend a little time now looking at them in more detail and reading reviews. Can I ask where you got the little shark mug?

Those look nice too!!
L got that mug for Christmas from here: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1079770931
Really? It has high levels of lead? Oh that's such bad news. I have a nice little collection (same as yours actually!) too and we use it. Mostly to store fruit on the countertop, but I do use the casserole dish in the oven a few times a year. Well, if I must, I guess it's time to go shopping! Your nursing shawl is beautiful!
