Last week's visit from Purple Grandma is quite a blur now, but a happy blur. It was good catching up with her after more than a year since her last visit. She enjoys going out and doing things so we try our best to cater to that. It's a nice way to be a tourist in our own town. We have lived here three years now but we tend to go out in nature when we do head out, so we haven't explored much of the city around us. Of course the girls just wanted to stay at Grandma's hotel and swim the whole time. Unfortunately the weather wasn't agreeing with their plan. It was quite chilly for an August week but they did get one day of swimming. As I am sure you can see in the pictures above, they were freezing afterwards, but it was worth it to them.

We ate out a lot and the children looked forward to trying new things each night. They especially enjoyed a playground next to Native Foods. Baby L made us all crack up with his antics. He would climb through the tunnel and come out doing this funny chicken walk with his neck sticking out and his arms flying behind him. What a character that boy of mine is. Speaking of eating out - while the restaurants we ate at were all vegan and relatively healthy, we all felt pretty sick by the end of the week (not to mention that Kevin and I gained a few pounds). On Saturday we officially began our Forks Over Knives diet lifestyle. (I don't like the word 'diet' because to me it implies that it's a fad and will come to an end.) It was a spur of the moment decision. The hardest part for me is no more coffee. I pretty much suffered caffeine withdrawal instantly. I had no clue how addicted I was! When I woke up Saturday morning Kevin had some tea (a gift from my wonderful friend Mackenzie) steeping for me instead of my usual coffee. That was a nice surprise but I was really regretting my late night Downton Abbey Marathon the night before. Psst Mom, if you are reading this, you'd love Downton Abbey.

I knit quite a bit in the car during all of our sightseeing and re-read Ibsen's 'A Doll's House' for about the thirtieth time in my life. I have now happily moved on to A Severe Mercy. I am only about fifty pages into it but I am hooked already.

I didn't mean to be so absent here. Just before we had to drive Purple Grandma to the airport on Friday I had a minor (ok, it was major to me at the time) issue with the blog. I almost had to temporarily shut it down. It appeared that some of my photos were being stolen. I tried not to think about it and enjoy our last bit of time with Grandma but it weighed heavily on my mind. Thank goodness for kind, sincere people like Jeni who came to my rescue and saved the day. I have a feeling I will be moving my blog in the near future, and when I do you can bet I will be going through her. Thanks again Jeni!!

So that's where I am at now. I think I will go sneak in a few more pages of my book before I go to bed. How was your week?

Looks like you guys had fun. To me little L is looking so much older lately, so much less like a baby. What a beautiful smile he has :). I'm sorry that you dealt with people stealing your photos, I can't even imagine!

Thank you :) I swear he grew up over night!
Sorry to hear about your blog troubles, you must have felt sick to the stomach. Glad all is on the mend with that - lovely photos once again x
Love the yellow sweater... Can you tell me the name of the pattern?

Thanks! Itwas the first sweater I knit for myself :) The info is here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/FrontierDreams/sh... (I modified it a bit) and the pattern is called the Shalom.
It looks like an interesting week visiting some neat spots in your area. :) I'm glad you have your blog issues straightened out!
What a darling boy Lucian is, his chicken walk is so funny! When does school start in Oregon? Here in the Netherlands it started last week!

Our school starts this week. I'm not ready, though!
One of my friends had a similar issue in which her pictures were stolen and used on facebook to impersonate her. (It was pictures of her children and highly creepy). Another friend somehow found out and let her know so you may want to have whoever your computer savvy friend is make sure it hasn't happened with your pictures as well. (I guess you can find it a compiment that someone elsel likes your work so much). I hope it doesn't happen again though!

Oh my goodness, how horrible!! I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing :(
Sorry to hear you were having trouble! Your blog is lovely, and one of my "dailies".
I'm curious why Grandma is Purple Grandma? We have a Blue Grandma - my grandma we actually call mom mom. Or blue mom mom or old mom mom (my kids way of saying great grandma) We call her the blue one because she ALWAYS wears blue. Every day. Holidays, Christmas and Funerals always a different shade of blue. She is fabulous - blue aside. She been organic farming her whole life and always has a natural remedy for what ever ails you. Shes my fav. and I have learned so much from her over the years.

Aww, blue grandma! I don't remember exactlyhowit came about but I am pretty sure C started it. Grandma's favorite color is purple so she always sends the girls purple things to remind them of her.
I love the "chicken walk" picture of Little L! So funny! My baby Emmett just started walking well last month and he walks the exact same way when he is excited and acting goofy... with both arms pushed out behind him like that. I adore little bitty boys! They are so funny!

Nicole,
Glad you guys had a good time. I am always "out and about" more when visitors come here too. I love the pictures of Baby L in the slide. So cute.

Love,
Taryn

P.S. I just saw the other day that someone copied one of my photos. Ugh, what a pain. I need to talk to Jeni about that too.
I wanted to ask, what made you decide on Forks Over Knives? I was vegan two years ago, and I felt great. We're now considering making the switch for the entire family, but we've always followed Dr. Fuhrman's guidelines. I've seen the FOK movie - do you recommend the book?

Watching the movie really did it for us. I was veganfor about 15 years of my life and then 2 years ago or so we decided to try dairy again.I've been feeling out of sorts ever since. When I was previously vegan I ate a lot of the processed soy foods andI know thsoe were not good for me at all. The China study was the final nail and what made us decide to go back to being veganbut following the FOK diet with only whole foods, no oil, no sugar, and no caffeine.
The book is great for the recipes and recalling facts from the moviebut their website and facebook pages have been a huge help as well. That way I can get my questions answered.
I hope that helps! If not ask away :)
Thanks for that response. We've been cooking up a storm to get ready for a week of vegan meals. That said, we may or may not also be planning a trip out for some frozen yogurt later today. One last splurge, if you will.

I'll check out the FOK website. I know my husband is eager to cut out sugar as much as anything, so it would be good to do some more reading.

When I was vegan before, I lost tons of weight, felt fantastic, and had so much energy. I think what was crucial for me was to look at my diet not as something that was restrictive, but instead focused on adding in -- I tried at each meal to make fruits and veggies the main component. I always thought about how I could eat more fruits and veg rather than how to eliminate meat and dairy. That mindset went a long ways for me.

Good luck getting back into the swing of things. I hope to see lots of updates on your progress!
HOw do you know if someone copies your photos? Does it say somewhere on the blog or do you just find it?

I don't think there is a way of always knowing... I wish there was though! I just happened to look at my stats at the right time to see a questionable link.
Sorry about your photos. That's so unpleasant! I don't understand how some people feel OK with stealing the creative work of others. It happens to so many musicians, too.

Glad your visit went well.
Denise Minger, Denise Minger, Denise Minger!! Please, PLEASE!! We are the moms. Our children's health can't afford for us to be messing around with made up science and myths. We have to step up to the plate and do our research many steps further than Forks Over Knives, Joel Fuhrman, and the China Study. For anyone who is still in that place, just KEEP STUDYING nutrition. Study it every day for as many hours as necessary until you stop being hypnotized by the ridiculously stupid China Study! We are moms...we have to feed this little generation much, much better than this!! This will affect your grandchildren's and their grandchildren's health profoundly. Just don't do it!! ---(former 25 year veg/vegan).
