Our latest child friendly arranging (and rearranging)

The girls' new water station

I love to arrange my home to make it as child friendly as possible. Some may say our house is more geared towards children than adults and I would have to agree - Our money tends to be spent on things for them more often than us. As our children enter new stages of development or if another little one joins our family I reevaluate our current set up and make any changes needed. Just recently, Baby L was so kind to bring a few necessary adjustments to my attention. I thought I would share some of them with you.

The girls' new water station

The girls' new water station

I like to keep the girls' drinking cups along with a child sized water pitcher out for them during the day. We have always just kept them on their table (you can see a bit about it here), but Baby L is a little monkey that loves to climb (as well as play with water). If you turn your head for just a moment he would climb up onto the table and proceed to pour out the entire water pitcher. I needed to figure out a new space that was high enough to be out of Baby L's reach but still low enough for the girls to easily access. One of our very dear friends out grew her wooden icebox a few months ago and gave it to us and we placed it in our children's play kitchen (older pictures here, we have simplified our toys quite a bit since then). That seemed like the perfect thing for the 'water station'.

Although I have a feeling I will need to move it again in the near future. I wonder if Baby L and his furry accomplice will devise a plan to get to it in the meantime... Rascals, I tell ya!

Besides being a monkey, Baby L is also a little daredevil. He still co-sleeps with us on our bed and seems to enjoy waking us up with a start early in the morning as he crawls at ludicrous speed towards the edge of the bed. Needless to say, we went ahead and put our mattress on to the floor.

I also set up a little corner just for him in our room. I like to keep it simple for my own sake. I can remember our dear teacher Miss Elizabeth telling us, "If you dump all of your children's toy into one pile on the floor and you feel too overwhelmed to pick them up - they have too many things!". So he has a stump with a little knit pig, a set of nesting bowls and a little book basket on it. I added two wooden trucks, too as they are his favorite toys at the moment. I rotate the books out quite often and in general like to limit it to about three in there at a time. Above he has Mine! A backpack baby story (but our copy is just in english), Mama Mama, The Prickly Hedgehog, and Buiten Spelen by Ronald Heuninck. This little spot of his really saves us in the morning. He goes right over to it when he first wakes up, giving me a chance to get a few extra minutes of sleep. (Since I don't get any at night anymore with his molars coming in, poor guy!)

So that is where we are at now. I really enjoy making my children feel like this home of ours is their space as much as it is ours.

In unrelated news, I spilled the beans to C tonight about our homeschooling plans for this year. She asked me if she was going to school when K goes this fall. I told her that she wouldn't be going to school with K but that she would be attending Kindergarten at home with Mama. K asked me if I was going to pretend to be C's teacher. I told her I wouldn't be pretending but really teaching. I am not sure what C thinks of it really, I don't think she fully understands. I'll ease her more into it over these next few weeks.

Such wise words about how many toys children need! I am constantly in the process of trying to declutter and simplify. You have inspired me to have another round! Toys seem to have the unbelievable ability of multiplying without realizing it! I love the self-check of seeing if dumping them on the floor feels overwhelming. Mind you, I don't need to do any of the dumping. My kids seem to do that for me multiple times a day! :)

Excited to read along on your homeschooling adventures with C!

Just recently started reading your blog and I've enjoyed the sweet way you allow your children to be children. I was wondering if you have thought about writing a post on toys and simplicity. Our little one is about to turn one and I already feel that her toys are overwhelming our house and her. I would love to hear other's ideas about how they keep toys reasonable and fun in their household. I sometimes feel like the mean mama because I have specific ideas about my little one and her toys. It nice to read about other families that realize less can be more! :)

Hi Nicole,
I love that little pitcher that you have set up for the girls. Do you happen to recall where you found it?
Thanks so much,
Jackie

Beautiful spaces in your home. I am just the same, always rearranging to make our home more "user friendly" for Abbie. I hope you get some rest x
You are amazing. So in tune with your kids. Something I strive to be but always seem to fall short of.

I love that picture of L and the cat. My Beast is just like that with any of our cats that will sit still long enough for him to reach. He loves to pet and hug them (and try to feed them play food).
our home is the same way- definitely geared more toward the children than adults. But also, seeing their artwork everywhere, their things, it's what I want too and it makes me happy. I don't know what I'll do someday when they're grown- probably things like the play kitchen will always stay set up!

I'm always amazed at how spare you are able to keep your children's toys. I keep trying with my son, but he remembers everything and wonders where certain toys have got to. Do you do it when they are asleep or with their help?

Love the simplicity. I need to cull out some of the toys and rearrange again soon...

Did you make L's jacket? I love it! My daughter's symbol at school is the sun and I'm planning to make a quilt or something with a sun symbol for her for Christmas. Still trying to figure out what design to use.

I love the idea of a little baby/toddler play nook in mama and daddy's room for little cosleepers. You have such great ideas! :)
I love seeing the corners of your home. I totally agree with "less is best". I wish that I had been more firm with family when the kids were really young as they have so much now! I "purge" regularly and as they mature I'm sure the pile will eventually shrink. I love your natural toys, we have replaced almost all of the plastic gifts over the past few years. It feels good doesn't it?!!
Love coming here!

Love your home set up! I think its great that you make it so kid friendly so they feel like its theirs too not just mom and dad's stuff and things they can't touch. Good Luck with your homeschooling! We are starting our fifth year and I love it. :) Looking forward to hearing how your first year goes for you.
This looks so wonderful, such a creative and sweet place to play. The cat picture is just too darn cute as well. What a sweet moment you captured.

Hi Nicole,
I saw that little pig and I had to send you a note. My daughter found one just like this at her school's fair when she was three and fell in love with it. "BItsy" was the her first and only real lovey still and she's seven! By the way, glad to know there is someone else who changes things around as often as I do.
Cheers,
Tracy

Nicole,
I love seeing the play spaces. I have a lot of work to do in getting the entire house child friendly. I only have certain areas right now, but I dream of an entire home that's baby friendly. :)
I laughed because our mattress in on the floor too. :) Bracken sleeps right between us.

Love, Taryn
Some more lovely ideas of child spaces for our homes! My 21 month old loves pouring from his pitcher jug into his small glass! (Although sometimes he will drink it so fast just to pour some more lol) I was wondering where you got that glass cup? I love it!! X x
It was a lucky find at our local thrift store. My little ones break their cups so fast I only buy thrifted ones now.
