a first

Little mouse nests in your hair,
tangled mouse nests everywhere,
little mousies making mischief,
brushing your nests out hurts,
Ouch!
- from This Is the Way We Wash a Day

K will tell you that this song is sung in our home far too many times a day, and I have to agree with her. Her hair is constantly full of mouse nests, no matter how many times we brush it or put it up in braids. I kid you not - we would brush her hair right before we left for school in the morning and by the time we arrived to her classroom you couldn't even tell it was ever brushed. I think it's just the nature of her hair.

Today on a whim I decided to do something about it. On our way to get Kevin some creamer we stopped at a salon. I told K we were there to cut her hair and that she could decide how short she wanted it. I would say she was thrilled at the idea but that would be an understatement! She had never had a haircut before this (minus self inflicted ones seen here), so this was pretty big. I am glad I happened to lug around my camera that day to capture this moment.

K chose to get a bob about to her jawline and I think it looks pretty darn cute on her. I was a bit nervous during the whole process that she was having second thoughts because she was very quiet and still - very unlike my K! As we left she became all smiles though and I realized she was just taking it all in. Phew! She played with her much shorter hair as we walked to the grocery store and asked if I would take a picture of her new haircut by the flowers for sale. Something tells me she will remember this day. I know I will.

p.s - Thank you for your kind words and encouragement in my last post. Perhaps I will come out of this shell of mine more often ;)

What a very cute 'do and a fantastic first.
Nin has really fine hair and it was always getting into such a tangle when it was long. A chin-length bob is easier to manage and she looks very pleased (it does feel really strange when you've had a reasonable length of hair cut off!) :0)

K was hoping to have enough for Locks Of Love, but not this time. Maybe the next time :) C has really fine hair but somehow or other it doesn't tangle...yet.
Looks cute!! That first cut is always a big deal.
gorgeous. my stepdaughter's hair isn't so nesty, but her brushing is a bit, um, lax. so for her, whenever she gets a haircut (she's nearly 13), it's a total gift from god. :)
Jenny's hair is the same way...it gets dreadfully tangled and ratty-looking when it gets past her shoulders! On top of that, she hates confining it in most ways, and the few times she wants something done to it, it only lasts a few hours at most. I just took matters into my own hands with a chin length bob, and a few layers to make the self inflicted bangs look a little more intentional. ;) K looks absolutely adorable with her new style...it really suits her!!

That sounds like C!!
Oh my goodness, what an amazing first those tangles are always so tough, and getting a cut must feel so good and grown up for K. So special.

Yeah, I think she felt like quite the big girl <3
We always have so many tangle in my daughters long hair and I just love the little song you shared. could you tell me what tune it is sang to if there is one? Thanks :)

I think the songwriter made the tune up so I am not sure how to explain it. But if you go to their website (I think it's naturallyyoucansing.com) they have clips of most of the songs so you couldget an idea. HTH!
Very cute!
You and your family are beautiful - love you knit hat in the post below.

Aww thank you Tonya! You are too sweet!!
It looks amazing! I bet she is loving having a new hairstyle, I remember loving to feel how different my hair was each time I got a cut when I was her age :)
She looks so beautiful! That is a haircut for fun people!!!
adorable! we have to do this for our girls every once in a while too. I always wait until my hair has 10" of length that can be cut off and then donate it, and my 7 year old did that this past year and was THRILLED. we didn't realize what a frustration her hair was for all of us, and our 3 year old is just getting enough hair to really need to deal with. fortunately we don't leave the house much...
So cute! My children all have VERY fine hair that tangles in an instant and I just wanted to share one of our tips. We almost NEVER wash with any kind of shampoo, only with conditioner. It helps my little ones stay a little closer to tangle free. :o) My daughters have always enjoyed it when they got their haircuts.

Thank you for that! Does it seem to get greasy? We cut back on washing her hair to about 2-3 times a week but it's still crazy.
She is such a beautiful girl--just like her folks! Congrats on the newer, easier-to-manage hairstyle. It's darling, and suits her.
Oh how lovely this shorter hair on Kaulini! So cute. I recently cut my girls hair for the first time too, she's now 3,5 years old and had big curls all the way to her waist. The tangles were terrible... she got the same haircut as your K, a short bob, and it's sooo cute. She was so thrilled too!
