Stars, Candles & Phoebe

More Santa Lucia makings... this one is for my special Baby L. I finished up C's crown minus sewing on the elastic on one side.

The girls and I took a trip to our local Bee supply store the other day (Thank you Dionne and Yvonne for letting me in on one of Portland's best kept secrets!) to stock up on some advent necessities.
Can you guess what I'll be doing the next few days?

Although, I started one and it separated because it's too cold in our house (as you can see in the picture), so I have to wait until we get a good fire going and then try again.

Yarning along and knitting along - on to actual knitting. Forgive the photo, I was out all day getting groceries (seriously... three stores = all day grocery shopping) and unable to get a picture until the sun was setting on a cloudy, rainy Oregon day (hence, the sweater thrown on the table alongside my groceries to put away). C's Phoebe sweater is coming along nicely. I finished up one front side and am now working on the other. I might be able to finish it in the next week or so, that is if I can stop myself from sewing. I did have a minor setback over the weekend, though. I have been copying the pattern out of the book onto post it notes, (so that the girls don't see me knitting with the book and figure out what I am making) and I somehow managed to copy part of it down wrong (probably in a sleepy state). I ended up having to rip out quite a few inches of knitting due to that mistake, but now I am back on track. I am on skein number four now and I have to admit I am a bit anxious about my yarn calculations. I was hoping to have enough for the sweater and to make one for C's doll. Not sure if that will happen or not.

Speaking of sewing I have a question for you: Now that K's first winter dress is done I am moving on to the girls' Santa Lucia dresses. More details on that later, anyways, since I want them to be fast and easy dresses I am using this simple pattern. I am hoping to alter it by making the length longer, the neck higher and the sleeves long. How do you go about making a short sleeved pattern into a long sleeved one? To alter the neck area I am thinking I should just add an inch or two to the pattern piece??? Does that seem right? This all seems so silly to me. I remember back when I made my own patterns and now look at me, I have forgotten everything. Oh well, it will all come back to me, eventually... right?

What are you working on? Happy creating!

P.S. I am hoping to talk to our school store owner this week about those pocket people kits from the Heart of Advent post but if you can find the supplies locally (or online) my friend Dionne just posted the tutorial for the ones she made (that were displayed at Heart of Advent). More details about the treasure candles coming, too!

You always have such beautiful sewing. I am so lucky to see it in person now, too ;)
Nicole, Not sure how to make the neck higher but for the sleeves just take one of her long sleeved shirts or dresses and inside out it, then trace that onto paper and add to your pattern. I am working on Santa Lucia dresses too and a crown tutorial. Can't wait to see yours : ) Hope you didnt get too worn out from all the shopping. What I have been working on? Well, not the KAL yet : ( but I made this: http://crunchycatholicmomma.blogspot.com/2011/11/...

Thank you! I will try that.
I am up to the wee hours making stuff too :) Some warm wool pants with cool linen pirate pockets for my boy so he can be dry and warm in his outdoor survival class this winter. Then on to his special pillow case he's been begging for and some pajama pants too. Finally I need to get working on a set of blocks for the baby girl with vintage story book pics decoupaged on to them. The only problem is I need more blocks and I can not remember where I got them from! Mommy brain strikes!
Sorry I have no sewing advice for you, I am winging it and have no idea what I am doing!

I am in the 'winging it' category, too. I hope you plan on sharing pics of all those fun creations!
I love the beautiful colour of your Phoebe's sweater! I hope your yarn holds out.
I'm getting very excited about advent - looking forward to reading more about your candles.
For the neck- try this tutorial. http://presserfoot.blogspot.com/2009/09/taking-it...
As for the sleeves- figure out the length, mark a line down the centre, and then extend the sleeves down to that length, tapering them. You can measure around the wrist for a wrist length.
the sweater looks lovely!

Your yarn is such a pretty colour.
If you have a hair dryer, you can use that to warm the beeswax sheets for rolling and they'll stick together just fine (it works for modeling beeswax too since it's often impossible to warm in our hands in my cold house).

I also extend sleeves by using a long sleeved shirt that fits as a template and drawing the pattern longer (I always redraw the pattern pieces onto waxed paper anyway, so I don't cut away the smaller sizes). Good luck, everything looks beautiful!

Thanks, for all your advice! :)
I could not work out what those beeswax sheets were for the longest time! Once I realised, I immediately want to make some for myself ;)

The sweater is looking fab, hope the yarn holds out for as long as you need
I have found that putting a sheet of beeswax flat on the rack in the lowest setting of the oven for about thirty seconds makes it lovely to work with.
L's crown looks charming!

Sorry no sewing advice. But it seems there is more from those far wiser than me!
For your neckline, do the same thing people have recommended for the sleeves. Use another shirt as a pattern. Alternatively, you can make the curve, then raise the shoulders to meet it.
I just trace the bottom part of the sleeve pattern and put it at the length I need and draw lines from the original sleeve to the wrist. Burdastyle.com has tutorials on stuff like that, but its really addicting. No idea on the neck. I usually buy patterns based on the neckline because I struggle with them.

I'm making new uniform sweaters for my kids since the school decided at the beginning of November to change the dress code. And food. Lots and lots of food because my husband requested a count-down to Christmas in the form of goodies. And inspired by your craft cabinet we made watercolors today and the kids painted, mostly their tummies but some of it made it onto the paper.

Aww, watercolored tummies, what a sweet image that must have been!
I have no idea about altering the patterns. But I can't wait to see them. The Phoebe is looking lovely. Such a great color and yarn! xoxo
