Trinities & Afterthoughts

I thought I would use up some of the leftover yarn from Baby L's summer cardigan by knitting up some cute snowflake socks using this free pattern. Nothing could be more fitting for my baby born in the wintertime, wouldn't you agree? Yes, I am a bit nutty about seasonal things for my children, ahem, moving along now...
This pattern uses an afterthought heel,(hence the random dark green scrap yarn stitch visible in the photos) something I haven't tried before. We'll see how it goes. I am wishing that I chose slightly more contrasting colors to show the pattern better, but I hope to make another pair for him but in red and white for Advent time this year. That color combo should show off the pattern nicely.

I am rather regretting allowing the girls to see Baby L's socks as I work on them. They would have made a great gift for him from St. Nicholas this year. I am having a hard time figuring out what to do for Baby L's gift from St. Nicholas. It's always something small, for instance - the girls receive honey sticks, a clementine and something else tiny. This year they will be getting Nativity sticker books from him, as well. Obviously, Baby L can't use honey sticks or a clementine yet (he won't be eating any kind of solids for some time still) so what can I make him, instead? I would love your input. He doesn't need anything from St. Nicholas but I think the girls would notice if he didn't get anything, know what I mean? He really doesn't need any toys or anything of that nature. Although, I plan on knitting him nesting bowls for Christmas...maybe they should be for St. Nicholas day, instead? Ack!!!

I am also finishing up C's Halloween costume. The pattern uses the berry stitch, something else new to me. I couldn't find instructions for that stitch anywhere online but instructions for the trinity stitch kept coming up in my searches.Looking at the patterns, they appear to be the same stitch. I love the name 'trinity stitch', too so I went with that one. It's a lot easier than I was making it out to be. I have to say I was a bit confused though when I was about halfway through with the first part of the costume. My stitches looked like that of a first grader (see photo above).

Then I looked at the inside of my project (It's knit in the round) and voila! there was the trinity pattern. Phew, it was working out after all.

Now off to try to finish that costume up, just in case K decides she wants one, too.
Oh, and you might have seen in Monday's post - I finished up my three little pumpkin heads. I hope to get pictures of all three of them in their hats soon.
What are you working on? Happy creating!

LOVE those socks! Look at you...dpn AND intarsia. Amazing. Hmmm...St. Nicholas treats for your boy. What about a knit clementine, and/or a bee-inspired hand-knit? Is there some sort of "stained glass-looking" thingy (made out of kite paper or something) to put in front of a night light bulb that has the nativity scene on it? This is cool, but a bit over the top: http://www.amazon.com/Fontanini-Religious-Family-.... These are more like what I had in mind (but in color): http://theangelsgarden.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Scree.... Looking forward to seeing what magic you make for sweet L this St. Nick's Day!
I'm having fun now...this one is sweet (still a bit pricy, though): http://www.amazon.com/Switchables-Stained-Glass-N.... But I love that they are inter-changable! Just right for season-loving families ;-).

How about a nice wooden ring for teething or (I know you said he doesnt need toys but..) wool balls, I made mine years ago for the dryer but my kids would take them. A few years ago my boys asked me to make them some for Christmas and I made one for my baby boy who is now 5. On Sunday I came out to find my husband and 6 out of 8 kids playing baseball in the rain and they were using the ball I made for Christopher that year. You could felt his name onto it. Now I have recieved a request for a new bigger ball from my older boys because they can play baseball without breaking any windows : ) Last idea, make a little wooden ornament for the tree with his name and year on it.
The socks are great. I am making dyed playsilks for my wee niece and nephew this holiday season. Or a cute hat with ear flaps. Felted balls are another gift I like to give for babies. Good luck!
Oh those socks are so pretty. I haven't tried anything like that yet but I'm going to have to check out the pattern you linked to and I love the name of the trinity stitch to :)
Those little socks are SO pretty! I think a pair in red and white would look wonderful! I'm also an all-things-seasonal nut! Love it!
I TOO am having a hard time figuring out what to make our sweet Elodie. Although she is still growing inside of me, she is due in 2.5 weeks and will be too little to really USE anything we give her for St. Nick's Day. I think some sort of handmade/handknit ornament is what I will do. I have already made this for her http://www.ravelry.com/projects/ModischStrickt/el... and am thinking about giving it to her for St. Nick's Day. But, I am excited to hear what other people have in mind as well !!!
Trinity stitch sounds (and looks) very cool, lovely texture :)

The socks are adorable, and I love the idea of seasonally related items for kids.
how about a knitted teether? or http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/striped-b...?

Love the colors of the socks!

How about this little braided ball? http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gevlochte...

They are on my list of things to make for our Yuletide Faire.
Oh, I wish you could sit here with me and teach me intarsia! And I love that trinity stitch, too!
As for gifts, A bright, golden knit ball, perhaps? You could even possibly needle-felt bees onto it...
The snowflake socks are cheerful in the green! I think seasonal knitting is a must for any tiny person. What about a tiny hat for St. Nicolas day-seasonally themed of course.
I agree the snowflake socks are so cheery. I love seasonal knits for my babes as well! And those pumpkin hats are too darned cute! I may have to try!
lovely lovely socks, i really like the light colours ! We do the Nikolaustag (st nicolas in German) too, we always keep it simple, an apple, a tangerine, a pack of dried fruits and one little present. I used to love this more than Christmas as a child :)
Those socks are wonderful - such a beautiful work of color :)
Wow, your work is impressive. Those baby socks are so sweet!
Those socks are lovely! For St. Nicholas Day we put nuts, oranges, candy (they don't get that often so it is a real treat) , a few coins and a small toy. The kids love it. I don't bother to put a toy in the babies stockings just some nuts and an orange which as you said yourself babies can't eat so it's really for everyone else. I just say the baby is so small that she doesn't need the toy. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
How about making him a knitted ball or a wool felt ball that is strips of wool sewn together. I'm going to post this on my facebook site too. http://www.thesilverpenny.com/FeltBall.html
your berry/trinity stitch looks so pretty, i seem to remember seeing a youtube video for the berry stitch, i'll have to look. adorable little socks too, the pattern is lovely. maybe make little l some special teething bisquits? when people i love don't need anything, i make food. everyone needs that. :)
Yooza! Stranded colorwork socks. You're braver than me. They are lovely!
Love the a-ha! moment with the trinity stitch...I"m pretty sure I've been there - looking at the wrong side of my knitting trying to figure out why it looks so strange!

I like the idea of a knitted clementine for the baby! Maybe have a little bell in it?
My first thought for baby L. was a ball too but you said that he doesn't need any toy.... what about a special bib, maybe knitted with some colorwork in it? Or leg warmers?
Love the socks and the colors!
I think the socks look great. Not to worry. The colours are working well together.
A felted ball with a bell inside? I made one a few years ago and put the bell inside a ping pong ball (so it would still jingle!), then felted around it. Beautiful knitting, I'll learn one of these years! x
