Burning the Midnight Oil

Still burning the midnight oil trying to finish up my last minute school projects for K. I really should have started these sooner as my knitting time has been oh so limited lately. I guess the world won't come to an end if I do not finish these two things up until Monday but I would rather have them done on time. We'll see what I can manage. At the very least her classroom slippers should be done by Friday. The only thing left on those is to sew the soles to the bottom of them so they have more traction (felted wool + waxed hardwood floors = slipping and sliding all over the place).

I quickly picked up K's birthday sweater upon finishing Baby L's union suit and have made quite a bit of progress on it. That is until I was about 95% done...

Do you see what I see?

Perhaps upon closer inspection?

How about now?

The sleeve that you see finished in the above photos had a huge color shift making it stand out as very mis-matched from the rest of the sweater. All of the skeins are very different from each other, and two of the skeins even changed color drastically about half way in. I bought all three at the same time from the same dye lot, yet none of them matched. It wasn't obvious, though, until I wound the skeins into balls. I alternated between two of the skeins for the body of the sweater which worked out ok enough but the sleeves had major issues.

I was impatient to rip the stitches out and didn't feel like chasing the light in my house, so these pictures aren't the best representation of how off the skeins were. It's pretty darn drastic.

Since I took the photos I finished up the sleeve seen on the needles and then ripped out the other sleeve that was pictured as finished. I started that sleeve over with leftovers from another ball and it looks much better. I am still not 100% happy with it. I wish I just started over all together with new yarn, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that. I knit up the yoke on this sweater about 4 times before getting it right (I was modifying an adult sized pattern) and had to rip out other areas more than once. Not to mention the fact that K's birthday is in less than two weeks... So this sweater is what it is. Either way I know K will be happy with it and that is really all that matters!

Now back to frantically knitting...

What are you working on? Happy creating!

If you haven't already, you still have a few minutes or so left to enter to win a copy of the union suit pattern. I am behind tonight...
Giveaway is located here. Good luck!

Megan just released the union suit pattern today and you can buy it now here.

I'm convinced you are super mama! I don't know how you do it all, but I am always amazed at the beautiful things you create and all the love you put into them. That is a gorgeous sweater.

I'm so sorry that you had such bad luck with dye lots, that really sucks. The sweater still looks very pretty, so please don't worry too much about it. But I can understand your frustration - I'm constantly fretting over the colour of my knitting, the look of the stitches and so on. But most of the times only the person who knitted the item can see a mistake or in your case the change in colours. We knitters are petty little creatures I guess =)
that sweater is so lovely...even with you pointing it out i can't see the colour shift...perhaps my morning eyes? so gorgeous though, well done mama x
Oh no! Gosh I hate that. But it's lovely, regardless. The color is sublime. I'm sure she'll love it.
As far as my own projects, as usual, I'm plugging away at little toys and haven't gotten to knit anything good in some time. Though, my littlest is in *desperate* need of the soaker I've have on my needle for *months*... I'm thinking I may just a row here and a row there, whittle it away. ;)
I have to say, I didn't notice the colour shift right away, but I know how frustrating it can be when it looks wrong, especially when the colours themselves are so pretty.
It's a cute little cardi despite the color issues. It's too bad the skeins aren't consistent since it looks like nice yarn otherwise.
I am working on several pairs of your beloved picky pants for a friend. And then maybe some for our baby. :-) I had some yarn that did that to me. Lots of unraveling to try to match it all up. What do you put on the soles of the slippers for traction?

Beautiful knits. When I saw your first picture I almost laughed out loud because I JUST posted this: http://08melissab.blogspot.com/2011/09/wip-wednes... (I know I'm assuming you might be doing the same thing?)

I hate having to rip out things partially or fully. I think the color changes in the sweater look fine, but it is frustrating to have skeins in the same dye lot be drastically different. What is the yarn you're using?

You know, I had that happen recently, too--same yarn, same dye lot, and no color match. Luckily I was able to use it for the hood on a hooded tunic, but boy, is the color difference ever noticeable!

I can't see a lot of difference from your photos. but the Cardi looks gorgeous anyway!

To answer your question, "What are you working on now?"...well, I crafted a needlefelted giraffe that took me sixty-five hours to complete...WHEW...and am asking for advice on how to minimize my needlefelting time but still accomplish a quality project...so if you wonderful mamas do not mind going to my blog to check out Giraffe-Schmiraffe and offer some sage advice, I would be most appreciative...And your knitting whether mismatched dye lots or not is ALWAYS lovely!! :)

The sweater is lovely and I really looked at your photos and did not "see" the dye difference....but then I am not the one knitting it am I!! I get frustrated with hand dyed yarns and their variations in depth of color, but it is so worth it because hand dyed is truly beautiful :)
I don't see it, but I know that I notice things in my knitting that no one else wouldn't ever see.

I'm sooooo in love with that sweater, though. The color variation is so subtle, and the pattern is so simple. I'm just a little bit jealous...
If it makes you feel better, I still can't see any problem with the color. It's a beautiful sweater! I'm working madly on a sweater that I really want to be wearing right now; I have two sleeves to knit and would love to have it done for a big event Sun 9/18. But ugh, I just need to switch gears so I'm going to cast on for two winter caps that should go quickly. Next on the needles will be three little boy socks to give as gifts for St. Nick's. I love that the weather is cooling down just in time for knitting fever to rise and keep things balanced.
the sweater is gorgeous....perhaps while it's being worn the colors won't look so off. I can't tell in the photos at all!!
The sweater looks beautiful - in the pictures I would never have noticed the colour shift. I am sure it'll look fantastic when it's worn. Beautiful!!

I love your cardigan..... so beautiful! I love the colours also. They remind me a little of the tutorial you did with dying with koolaid. I really want to try it with those Koolaid colours as I adore them. Love this pattern as well will you be sharing it on Revelry?

I, personally, think the sweater looks great! Would you mind sharing the pattern?

The sweater looks lovely, the adaption looks great! Disappointing about the major color switch though. I hope it works out well. We start school next week but I'm out of town unexpectedly this week thus saving me from last minute craziness!
Ooh, I love the sweater. So so pretty.
One sleeve to go on Chloe's cardigan...
XOXO
Oh Nicole, how many of us knitters have been there, done that?!!! I feel for you...especially with the time constraint. Your little girl's sweater looks remarkably similar to some yarn I began making a sweater for my daughter with last winter. Is it Handmaiden's in Melon? My girl would have loved it, too, but I didn't have enough yarn and waldorf mama sent me some but it was WAY off. I would have dealt with what you did today. Sighs. It is still so beautiful, though, and most likely your daughter won't even notice...she'll be so happy to be wearing a mama made sweater:)

That happened to me with James's Christmas vest. The front and the back were two very different colors. Oh well.

I hope it works out in time - but truly, give yourself a break, too! I doubt your daughter will notice any color change in an already multi-colored sweater :) (I know, I know, you'll notice, but remember, only God is perfect)
