Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post i on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

Happy Saint Nicholas day! I think I would rather focus on that than knitting right now. Christmas knitting isn't going very well. I had grand plans of knitting K a sweet stocking with Dala horses on it but I am not having luck with yarn to knit it with. I do not have a local yarn shop here in Mountain Home (although there are some in Boise- I just haven't had the chance to visit them) so I buy my yarn online. Normally the yarn looks the same in person as it does on my computer screen but red - that is another story. It never looks the same in person. That red yarn you see in the photo above looked red when I ordered it but now that I have it in my hands, it looks more burgundy. I am really wanting a traditional Christmas red, like the red of the Dala horse pictured with it. This was my third attempt at ordering yarn for this project. I starting knitting with it trying to make myself like it but it just isn't happening. Maybe I should scratch this stocking project until next year...

What are you working on? Happy creating!

I so agree about ordering red online - I only order reds I've seen in person. Patons makes a Christmasy red called "Bright Red" (if I recall correctly). If you can find that online (Yarnspirations or LoveKnitting?) that might be more what you're looking for. That's my go to yarn for reds this time of year!
I can relate to the frustration of trying to purchase your crafting supplies online! There are some items that are just need to seen and touched. I'm working on a special project with some gem stones and am on my third attempt at purchasing online. The sweet merchant has been SO accommodating about my need to return some and try, try again.
If that is Swish DK...I am using that right now to knit baby hats for our hospital nursery for babies born on Christmas eve and Christmas Day. The Swish color most close to "Christmasy red" to me is called "Serrano", which is what I am using.

If that's wool of the andes, then the one called "red" is a similar shade to that horse (I always think of that as "tomato". I'm using that shade in stockings for my brother and his fiance in an ultra modern home that's mostly grays and whites with the occasional pop of BRIGHT accent colors). Just a bit lighter/brighter. I've only used "firecracker heather" in stroll, but it had a lot more orange than the horse.
How frustrating! I hope you can find a good red. Naturespun has a great Christmas Red called Red Fox. You might try that.
So frustrating! I used Patons Classic Wool Worsted in "bright red" for my son's Christmas stocking and love the color -- classic, Christmas-y red. http://www.yarnspirations.com/yarn/classic-wool-w...
love this blog..
Lovely project Nicole! Cascade 220 comes in really some nice bright reds, it's my favourite economical crafting yarn. Good luck and happy Christmas crafting!
I know exactly the color you're looking for! It's called Serrano in Swish DK from KnitPicks. It's a perfect Christmas red, I think you won't be disappointed if you get it!
One thing to keep in mind: the values in these yarns are similar, where as a red with a lighter hue value would probably look quite off with a green with this much dark in it. These would compliment each other well. Just food for thought.
I don't have any local yarn stores in my area either. We live in the north of Australia, which is sub-tropical and tropical, so I don't think there's a high demand for it around here. I have to order everything online and sometimes the colours aren't that great. It's frustrating isn't it?
Earlier this year I picked out some lovely pink shade to knit a baa-ble hat. I'm not usually a pink person but the colours really appealed to me. The yarn arrived very much purple. Luckily I like purple :-)
Thank you for the suggestions and for hearing my frustration! Maybe I won't give up so easily after all :)
