To fix or not to fix

desk - to fix or not to fix?
fix? Our kitchen fell apart this weekend which led to our whole house falling apart. The sink hose basically exploded and water began gushing out everywhere. Kevin had to just shut down the water until he could fix it or the maintenance men could come (Monday) so we went all weekend without a sink to do dishes. They piled up pretty fast, too. I really should have taken a photograph later in the day today because that photo above is such a tiny portion of the mess that soon followed. We went through every pot, pan and dish we own. The kitchen has been my "frontier" so if it falls behind then it has a huge affect on me and a domino effect on the rest of the house. I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that I was frazzled. Thankfully Kevin was able to do a temporary fix this evening so we could clean our dishes until it is fixed tomorrow (my hero!).

We have been gluten-free for over a week now and I have to say I am feeling pretty darn good. I have so much more energy than usual. Baby F has been happy and even cooing and smiling a lot. It might be a coincidence or it just might be the gluten! We'll keep it going.

To fix or not to fix? That is the question. I have been a few school desks like the one above for awhile now. I posted in out local classified and a very kind woman responded saying she had one that needed some work done that I could have for free. I was thinking it might just need some sanding and painting but it appears that the wood on both the desk and the chair portions is warped all the way through. I don't know if I could even replace it looking at the way it is attached to the metal. Then again I know nothing about woodworking. Can it be done? Would it be worth it? Any insight on this? I would love to be able to fix it up and use it in out home. Right now it is sitting on our porch until I can figure out what to do. Sorry neighbors!

I have seen people do both, replace the wood and also sand down the majority of it then poly it. sometimes the warped wood brings it a feeling of hope. Weird I know.
I feel you on the kitchen explosion. We moved recently and the entire kitchen has been under renovation and out of use for over a month now! Dishes in the bathtub! I like the oldness of the desk, and would fix it just enough to make it safe for use (no splinters!). :)

We should have a dishes in the bathtub party! :D
To me personally it looks as though the existing wood is too far gone to refinish. Replacing it would seem to be the best option if you can figure out how to get the fasteners off.

Last month our sink was down for about four days so I totally get it. Hopefully everything is back to normal soon :)

That is what I was thinking, too. Those fasteners though. Yikes!
Just replace the arm piece, paint the seat and back and then cover with a quilted pieces. Be mindful of lead in the metal though anything before 1970 has lead and it can rub onto your children's legs from the bottom rest. It must be sealed and not wear off.

Sara - thank you so much for mentioning the lead! I think this desk is from the 80s but I am not sure. I am going to test it before I even think about taking any steps towards repair. If it does have lead I'll just get rid of it. I don't want to take the risk, especially after the pyrex scare.
I get you on the frazzled thing. We've been doing a mini home renovation the last couple of weeks, and it's starting to make me twitch. lol. I have a really hard time functioning in spaces that are cluttered, and our home is cluttered right now because of all of the painting and stuff that's going on. Our kitchen is going to be torn up in a couple of weeks while we paint our cabinets and have a new sink and countertop installed so I'm sure that's going to be a challenge as well. I just keep reminding myself that it's only temporary!

I bet it will all be worth it when it's done. Are you going to share before and after pics?
I'd bin the desk. You'd have to buy new wood for at least the desk, and do you want your little ones to get splinters from the wretched seat? We did all our schooling at the kitchen table when mine were the age of your little ones. Then we got big table-type desks from Ikea, so that they could spread out and really work on a project. Those old-fashioned desks are made to go in classrooms, in little rows. No space for creativity.

We actually do most of our schooling outside or at our kitchen table, too. This is just a little "for fun" project :)
