Disoriented

mug rug for K mini quilting projects are way too fussy! C's card in progress K's card in progress unicorn gift for a friend umbilical hernia almost all healed up brotherly love brotherly love wiggle worm

I am feeling rather disoriented after the long weekend so please forgive my scatterbrained thoughts in this post. I keep feeling like every day is Monday. We in the fog of sickness right now too, adding to my confusion. So far everyone but Baby F and Kevin are sick. I am praying it stays that way. I thought I might help to cheer up my sick K by sewing her a mug rug for the nightstand next to her bed (and to help preserve the nightstand since I seem to have to sand it and re-beeswax it once a year). I found a tutorial that was really cute and seemed simple enough, but I forgot that I lack the ability to sew straight lines. The tiny pieces were super fussy to work with and well, I think the photographs pretty much speak for themselves. I was disappointed with the outcome but K loves me and it anyway. Maybe when the quilting plumps up with a washing it will help to cover up the mistakes.

Did I ever mention Baby F's umbilical hernia to you? I can't remember. Well, it is healing up on it's own now, thank goodness. I think his cloth diapers helped with that as the come up over the belly button helping to press it down - similar to the belly bands they sell for umbilical hernias on babies. His stomach doesn't seem to get upset as easily now that it is healing up which is a huge blessing for all of us.

Speaking of tummies, we decided as a family to go completely gluten-free for the next 15 days to see how our bodies react. I went grain-free for Lent one year and I remember feeling so much lighter and full of energy. C might have the hardest time with this trial since she would live off of bread if I let her. I am hoping I have enough delicious alternatives for her that she'll get by. I'll keep you updated on how it goes!

And on that note I need to get my sick self into bed with the rest of my family. I hope you all have a truly enjoyable rest of the week.

p.s. - Ravelry notes on the completed unicorn gift can be found here.

your mug rug is lovely ;) We are gluten free, and I make a loaf of bread from milled sunflower seeds, it is lovely... and yummy. GF breads don't rise like normal, so it is much smaller but it is very tasty and easy to make. Let me know if you want the details. Love Sue from a very chilly England, thought this was meant to be June?????
I adore the mug rug. I'd be thrilled to receive it as a gift. You are far too hard on yourself. Please keep us updated on how going gluten-free makes you all feel. I know gluten free is an adjustment but I see SO many great-looking recipes on pinterest that I'd be thrilled to eat. Also, we have a local couple who are gluten-free bakers who sell at our farmer's market that I'm friendly with and their breads and crackers are incredible. I can't afford to buy much but I buy one thing per week to support them because I love their ideals and business sense and they have become personal friends of mine over the last 18 months. Gluten-free hasn't been a death sentence for them. They are foodies and they eat incredibly well and I believe it can be done. I do wonder if it can be done affordably and that's why I'd love to see how you do it. I know if anyone is sympathetic to my single social worker mom budget, it would be you. I'm thinking rice and potatoes and salads and beans. But I'd love to see your interpretation. Good luck!!!
I love your mug rug! I also like the unicorn. I can't imagine going gluten free but I know many do it.
I sew a lot, and when I saw that photo of the mug rug, I thought, "Oh, that is so beautiful! I want to make something like that!"
It's so funny that you're unhappy with the mug rug. When I was scrolling through your photos I saw it and thought "wow. okay. i want that!" (:

It seems that we are always our toughest critics.

I think that rug turned out awesome! My baby had an umbilical hernia as well, and it healed up really well all on its own.
Three day weekends always leave me confused! There is so much great gf stuff available. I don't think your girlie will even miss bread! LOL
Your mug rug is beautiful. Imperfectly perfect...just the right kind of perfect :-) you can be proud of your efforts and your daughter will feel all the love that has gone into it. Hope you all feel better soon. We are all sick here too. My youngest daughter struggles with tummy aches ( she also loves bread far too much!) We have gone wheat and spelt free and occasionally gluten free, but I think you are right, you have to do it properly. Good luck with that. Look forward to hearing all about it!
I have been gluten free for years and have found that some store bought bread is quite good. Canyon Bakehouse is good and they are in Colorado.
I believe they even can ship there bread to you. It is good because you do not have to toast it and I think that the children will like it. It looks and tastes like "regular" bread. Good luck with it.
I hope everyone is feeling better soon!

And that mug rug is adorable, I can tell you worked long and hard on it. Be proud! :)
I hope you are all feeling better soon! I think your quilting is very cute - handmade need not be "perfect." : ) For gluten free, I suggest finding a good recipe for almond and coconut flour pancakes. They are delicious, even better than wheat pancakes. : )
Hello from an old friend in Williamsburg. I encourage your Gluten-Free adventure. You may remember I went GF while at the Kinderhaus. All the yummy snacks served at our seasonal events were GF, DF, and Nut Free. Just be conscious of pre-made options or recipes are have a lot of starch in them (potato, corn, etc.). Too much is not good for the blood sugar. I believe King Arthur Flour Company makes a GF flour and maybe one for a bread machine. They also make an Ancient Grain Flour that is GF and super yummy. Bob's Red Mill is good too; but not my favorite. If you ever want to catch up the old school way, let me know. Give my K a big hug from me!
I've been cooking GF for my hubby for several years now. He self diagnosed himself with a sensitivity. It was difficult at first but now I don't even think about it.

Please, please, please tell me you know the name of the cardinal fabric in that gorgeous quilt! I'd love to see if I could purchase some as my 6 year old daughter loves cardinals and birds in general.

Hi Hannah! I wish I knew more about the fabric but the quilt was a gift from my friend Natalie. You could try asking her though : http://westcoastlovinmama.blogspot.com
I found it! Thank you so much. :)
