Just call me Grandma

planting seeds and eating carrots planting old seeds as an experiment C's painted lady caterpillars waxworm (greater wax moth) making calendula salve caldendula and comfrey salve in progress K's human sundial (a bit hard to see) painting doll beds doll beds Ack! Land Shark!! Land Shark Land Shark!

Well, it's official. Our garden plot is just dirt. We have less than three years left here in Idaho so instead of amending the soil we decided to just go with raised beds. Unfortunately as soon as we came to that conclusion and got the supplies, Kevin's boss had him working twelve hour shifts along with weekend duty so we haven't made any progress. The snow has already melted off of Mount Bennett (a local informed me that is the day you can plant your sprouts outdoors) so my children and I are chomping at the bit to start planting. While we try to exercise our patience, we are experimenting with some very old seeds we found, seeing if they will grow or not.

C received her birthday present from Nana and Grandpa early this year because... well, it's alive! They sent her this butterfly garden. The caterpillar voucher that came with it said it would take 3-4 weeks for the caterpillars to arrive. I put the order in on the first and they arrived within one week. Oops. C is thrilled, though. She has ten caterpillars to watch over. They are actually forming into chrysalises now. This wonderful gift inspired some nature lessons and has C pouring over our Nature Anatomy book. Both her and K are very interested in butterfly life cycles and the difference between butterflies and moths. As if on cue, Kevin found a waxworm (greater wax moth) outside and now K is taking care of it so she and C can see how different a cocoon looks.

Speaking of C, she and I have been a bit obsessed with wild crafting and herbs lately. We started up some calendula and comfrey salve today (from Rosemary Gladstar's book) and are dying to make some fermented dandelion stems. We are two ingredients short and have to wait until this weekend to make the drive to Boise to pick them up. As for K, she has been learning about time in her math lessons the past week and part of that was making a human sundial. I think she loved the excuse to go outside every hour to measure her shadow. She had a fieldtrip to a bank today with a local homeschooling group. We all enjoyed ourselves and I have a feeling we will be seeking out this group more often in the future.

Oh and Land Shark! Doesn't it drive you crazy when you are trying to craft a bed for your bunny and out of nowhere a shark pops up?!

...and then on a rather comical note:

can not take a selfie to save my life Just call me Grandma (I so do not know the art of taking selfies)

C, Little L and I were playing at a local park while K was in her RE class. I took a knitting break after the three of us discovered an edible herb - shepherd's purse (although we didn't dare eat it knowing that the park was probably sprayed). A little girl maybe seven or so walked up to me and said, "Hey I know that girl (pointing to C). Is she yours? Are you her Mom or Grandma?" I smiled and said, "Her Mama." I laughed to myself and thought, it must be the knitting or my frumpy clothes (note to self - put a much overdue shopping trip higher up on the priority list). Maybe my laugh lines? Eh, I accept them as proof of a life lived well.

Kevin laughed when I told him about it. I asked him to take a picture of me but he flat out refused. Rascal. So I tried my hand at a selfie as a gentle reminder to myself that I don't look like I am old enough to be a Grandma yet. But I can not master that art, at least not in a flattering way! He,he. Oh well.

Maybe I should be slathering on my butterbean on a daily basis, just in case.

You are beautiful! Your face is so wondrously smooth and perfect! Please don't feel down, kids don't always know what they are saying!! ((:
You are beautiful and definitely don't look like a grandma!

So neat that your kiddos are raising butterflies and a moth. A homeschool family we meet up with weekly just experienced the process and so we want to try it next year too!
you do not look like a grandma! you are lovely. :)
very cool about the butterflies and the moth. love to see updates.
You're beautiful and certainl don't look anything like a Grandma, unless you'd had a child at 12 or something!

Would love to see caterpillar updates. I remember my class trying to look after one at school, unfortunately the silly thing fell into the jar of water we'd put the plants in and drowned!
I am terrible at being natural or posing for photos. And yet I make others do it. Unlike you I'm so NOT photogenic & my mother laughs at my "this is my good side pose". Your first photo is just a tad serious. ;) Love the more natural second closeup with a hint of a smile! You look VERY young so have NOTHING to worry about, funny. Must be that Oh She Glows Diet. And you're beautiful too Nicole! So blessed to be a natural beauty without a stitch of makeup. Somehow I didn't realize that you were a redhead. Even though we've met in person & I've seen you in your photos. The closeup really captured the color. You're definitely blessed to have red hair & green eyes! And so long too. Really lovely. I wish I had easy care straight hair. With my wild curls & greys (my hair started to grey grey in college!) I just plop a hat on my head most days, LOL. I need a makeover.

I should just order your butterfly garden cause its a theme of ours for Eastertide & must be so fun to see it develop. 10 is alot! Will be fun to photograph. Hugs Nicole!
Def not a grandma!
That is too funny! You look beautiful but not grandma material yet.
I think you're stunning.
Being a 'grandma' doesn't mean you have to be old. My grandma was 41 when I was born (mom and grandma believed in marrying young). I think it was more a question because you were out with the kids when most 'mom's' are at work??

Likely that or that little girl herself has a young grandma. Do not take it to heart. I was pregnant with my first, and really a tiny pregnant lady, when little boy came to me and said,:"That is one big fat baby in your belly." I wish, as she was the tiniest little baby born just shy of 37 weeks.
Lovely photos, your hair is getting so long!! You have bright green eyes like me. I'm the only one in my family with them. Hubby and 3 of the kids have brown, and 2 of the kids have blue. On a similar note, my oldest daughter takes my youngest for walks whenever she can, and people assume she's the mama. So I'm sure they think I'm the Gramma too when I come along ;o)
Of course you don't look like a grandmother. You are a beautiful mama! Kids, as I'm sure you know, are notoriously bad at guessing the age of grown ups. Really, if you're over 15, you might as well be ancient to them.

Another funny coincidence: we're waiting for butterflies, too! I just added pictures of our caterpillar's chrysalis to my Investigating Insects blog post. First the train jammies, now the butterflies. It makes me feel good that we seem to be on the same page.

And one more thing. The human sundial is genius. I would love to make a permanent one with paint outside, so the little one could always know what time it was by standing in the middle of it. Unfortunately, we don't own any of the ground around our apartment, so I can't put in anything permanent, but my Owen still has a few years before he's ready to worry about time anyway. Still, I'm pinning it for the future, thanks for the good idea!
I think your selfie's are rather beautiful :)
I once called LAND SHARK to my husband and he looked at me like I had grown a third eye. Ha! It's nice to know someone else knows the reference.

Sometimes I feel like I'm getting old when I am knitting but decided I enjoyed it too much to care. Perhaps that means I *am* getting old :)

Maybe I should try out that Butterbean stuff and some wildcrafted herbs. You are such a radiant beauty! ...and I bet you are ever more beautiful when you smile :)
I don't think m I've ever commented on your blog, but I'm a longtime ereader. You do not look like a grandma at all! No. Just no.
Lol, you do NOT look like a grandma! You are *very* pretty! I have heard children say that very thing to/about women, truly - I think little ones just do not understand ages and relationships at all. It took my son years to grasp that his Aunt W is his Daddy's sister. But, listen - I tried to take a selfie after you posted this, and I cut off my own head. I may have to share it somewhere. It's too funny. I'll bet your children are so excited about the butterfly garden; I know I would be. You are really inspiring me with your herbal preparations. My little Elizabeth and I are working on an herb garden. We have little plants in pots on our kitchen windowsill, and, like you, can't wait to plant them outdoors.

HAHAHA! Just a little affirmation, you don't look anywhere near old enough to be a grandma and you are lovely to boot! I thought the grandma thing was referring to caterpillar grandbabies, lol, until I got to that end part. You just gotta remember that children that age have little grasp on the age differences of adults, we are ALL just in one category to them- OLD
We had an excellent food garden in our last place but we moved to a new rental and we only have herb and berry varieties and tomatoes in pots. It will be a while before we can afford our own place where we will have a small orchard and thriving organic gardening. It's disappointing but I am making use of this available free time with lots of handmade sewing and knitting. Oh you are absolutely beautiful!!! Kids say funny things; I'm sure it was the knitting.
Working with kids, I learned very quickly not to take age ideas personally! One six year old guessed I was 54 and my friend was 18 (we were both 28 at the time). Kids definitely aren't great at ages when it comes to adults! You look wonderful :)
Oh, you are beautiful. I never give compliments (ask my family...) but just tell what I see! The grandma comment is priceless. Perhaps it is because you are so relaxed with your children--my DH and I joke that having our third is like raising our own grandchild, since we are so much more relaxed this time around.
