Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

It all started out as a harmless schooling effort - rather selfishly for myself... I really enjoy watching the birds in our forest backyard and could sit there gazing at them for hours on end. I thought it would be fun to have all of us finally learn about our local bird species (since we have been here three years now), so that we could identify them all. Maybe even make a game of it to see if we can find all of the different birds that live in our area. What a great learning experience, right? Well, now it has become an obsession in our house and not just for me!

We have had a bird identification bookfor some time but we found it to be a bit too broad and out of date (it's an older version that belonged to Kevin's Papa), so we picked up the National Geographic Field Guide to Birds: Washington/Oregon to help us out more. I am quite content we did. It's such a user friendly resource, not to mention kid friendly, too! As a matter of fact, I often find all three of my little ones looking at it as they watch the birds. Baby L picked up yet another baby sign because of all of this - bird. He gives a huge toothy smile and speed crawls to look out the window if you even whisper the word or make the sign for bird.

Last week the ultimate shirt for my bird crazy baby arrived at our door. How sweet is that?! It's from Dandelion Dream, in case you are wondering. I would dress him in Erin's beautiful shirts all the time if I could. He recognized the bird on it right away and the color, oh that apple green, inspired me to make something to go with it. I knew a knitting project was in store and I had just the yarn stashed for it. Now I am just debating if I want to knit longies or shorties with it. I am thinking longies as it's cold here more so than warm.

And in other news - I somehow managed to pull off this birthday gift for my friend's sweet baby girl. I made it a bit more girly looking with a picot trim (thanks to some rav help), and think it came out pretty cute. These pictures are prior to blocking so it looks a bit wonky. Rav notes can be found here.

Enough about me, what about you? What are you working on? Happy creating!

I love the little vest, the picot edge is the perfect girlie touch
The hearts are so pretty! What a nice detail! Is the dresser's knob a bird as well? Where did you get that?

Ha,ha yes it is a bird (we are beyond obsessed, right?!) I found the knobs at JoAnns fabric store over the winter.
Ah! We don't have joanns here. I guess I'll have to look for them on the internet.
Love that apple green for spring/summer! Its such a bright happy color! :) Your vest turned our awesome, love the hearts and the boarder.
Beautiful knitting and love that apple green shirt and green-blue yarn colour!
Great shirt! Perfect for a little bird lover; I have one of those in my home as well! The vest is great. Can't wait to try that pattern - next project!

the knobs go perfect with the shirt, and the book...
i had to wait till my lil ones weren't around to read this (again) to post my link, as my middle child would insist on some wooden horses for her (my post has knit horses in it!)

Ha,ha. That sounds like my girls!
Love that sweet little vest!
Such a pretty pink top!
We love birds here too- the kids have gotten quite good at spotting 'new' birds at the feeder- it caused great excitement last week when an Indigo bunting tried to land on our window and two rose breasted grosbeaks (males) were spotted on the ground :)
Hi Nicole! I'm leaving a second comment here just to thank you once again for the rainbow cake inspiration (previous post). I tried it out and I'm very happy, but most of all, so is my little (or I should say big) girl (5)! http://sarah-ourislandhome.blogspot.ca/2012/05/5....

Oh how great! Yours looks so much better than ours!
I got this book which tells you about all the different birds. I loved as a little kid to look out in the window at all the birds and try to identify them from the book. I would always get excited when I saw a blue jay. They are rare here.
