WIP Wednesday : Eeeeeeeeek!

Halloween is just around the corner and I have only just begun preparations for it! While it isn't really a Waldorf holiday, and we don't celebrate it in school, we do like to acknowledge it every year with a little fun dress up time.

Dress in progress

I planned on giving K this dress on her birthday along with her Little Red Riding Hood cape I knitted for her, but I just didn't pull it all off. It's really just a simple dress that just happens to work as a costume.

I am wishing I did not procrastinate, ahem, so I could alter the pattern and make it long sleeved instead of short. She'll wear one of her wool long sleeved tops underneath it for Halloween, to get by. I have a feeling she'll be wearing this dress all spring and summer, so it should all work out.

Finishing up the dress' apron embroidery

While I am at it, I am making a few little things from the Halloween Fairy. Every year the girls bring their candy home and then set it on the nature table for the Halloween Fairy. The next morning they wake up and the candy is gone and has been replaced with gifts. I like to give them honey sticks (always a favorite here) and something handmade. I quickly needle felted this little ladybug for K last night and I think she'll enjoy it. Now I need to think of something for C...

A ladybug for my ladybug

Back to work I go!
Happy creating everyone!!

I esp like the idea of leaving the candy for the halloween fairy! This is a nice way to still let the children enjoy trick-or-treat, but by pass the loads of sugary candy.

I just love the embroidery!
And that ladybug idea is going in my handmade holiday notebook for Sarah - I just blogged today about her love of them.
Thanks for sharing!
Warm wishes, Tonya

The embroidery is just lovely! I'm sure she'll wear this lots. How adorable! We do the Halloween Fairy too but they leave their candy in their baskets outside their bedroom doors. The Halloween fairy is starting to bring some organic candy and chocolate mixed with a small toy or Lyra face pencils. I hope your girls have a great Halloween! <3

Sweet embroidery...and I just love the ladybug. When I was about 8 years old and we had just moved to Germany in the 1970's, the ladybug was a really popular motif for kids things, and I have a real affection for them!

Oh, you are making that dress!! I have that pattern, though of course I don't really follow patterns so haven't made it exactly. Apron dresses have always been a favorite of mine! (Someday I will tell you a story about it, but it seems like we are in the middle of way too many stories for now.) The embroidery is so sweet! I can't wait to see it finished. Did you already finish the Red Riding Hood Cape?
Thank goodness the girls take it upon themselves to create their own costumes. This year I believe they are going to be elves. We don't go trick-or-treating, but we will take a nice little forest walk in the evening.
Now back to all that work I mentioned to you yesterday...

Could you tell us which pattern you use for the dress? My daughter has decided to only wear dresses and I'd like to make a few for her.

Nicole, I have to tell you that I tried to steal your idea for the Halloween Fairy last year and the kids were really into it but dp was not! It turned out okay because I tucked the candy away and they forgot about it anyhow but I was still disappointed.

I love the Red Riding Hood cape! I was also planning to knit and felt the pumpkin baskets like the ones that you've made, but time got away from me!

Can't wait to see pictures of your night. :)

Wonderful!!

I'm borrowing your Halloween Fairy idea. My oldest is only a little older than your C (She'll turn 3 in December) and is really excited about it!

I really love your little lady bug. Where do you get your roving? I needle felt also and the roving I buy always seems to be too silky (and the fibers don't lock together) or too rough- never a happy medium!

Hello Nicole! What beautiful embroidery you do! Is that your own design? I like the idea of the Halloween fairy. Right now, we make a long journey to our nearest Waldorf school as they put on a magical forest walk with little scenes of fantasy and imagination (think Apple Fairy, then Jack Frost painting the gardens). It is so magical and beautiful and not scary at all. A nice introduction to this festive time. Next year though, we may introduce your Halloween fairy. Thanks for a great idea!
