Little Mama

Well, I knew this day would come but I didn't think it would happen this quickly. K has always loved to embroider with me, but ever since I started using my sewing machine more she has been really antsy to give it a try.

C picking fabric for K to use

I don't feel quite ready to have her use a machine just yet (never mind she couldn't reach the pedal anyways) so I needed to find some kind of compromise. She told me she really wanted to make clothes for her baby dolls. I went to my studio/sewing room hoping for some inspiration. Out of the corner of my eye I spied a lovely package that I won from Julia at Adirondack Mama (Who makes me miss my hometown in New York so much). Inside of it was all kinds of fabric pieces that I had yet to organize and put away. I grabbed a handful of them, some embroidery floss and a sharp needle and brought it all to K.

Starting to sew

I showed her how to hand sew and within minutes she was cutting fabric and sewing away. Here's her first completed outfit - a cape and skirt for Purple Grandma Baby (C gave her that name):

She was oh so proud of herself! She now has a basket of fabric, embroidery floss and a sharp needle (stored in a glass jar so C can't get to it) in her art cabinet so she can create doll clothes whenever she desires. I actually caught her sewing in bed last night - be still my heart! I have a feeling our dolls are about to have a whole new K-made wardrobe.

Bed head :)

Wishing you all a magical Memorial Day weekend!

That is just the sweetest! I can't wait until my girls are old enough to sew. I have fond memories of my grandmother teaching me how to sew and embroider at age 4. Wonderful!

May you have a joyous Memorial Day Weekend!

So sweet! I loved when Zach started sewing, and he comes up with ideas and fabric combinations I wold never dream up. It's such a fabulous exercise for little ones on so many levels! And the irony in our family is, I don't know how to sew, but just made the supplies available to him. So we learn together :)

That is so sweet. How old is K? Whenever I hand sew my daughter asks if she can do it. I let her pull the string and we just take the time to finish it together. I'd really like to encourage her little spirit, but nervous about the needle and if she understands. Right now I have some wooden shapes and shoestrings that I bought for her to practice & I was thinking perhaps beading next....

Awww, this warms my heart! What a beautiful thing, passing down traditions of handmaking.

She did a lovely job on her first outfit!

I taught my daughter to sew to! K has an art cupboard? I would love to see something like that.

What little doll is that?

She is lovely and so full of joy. What a precious one you have.

And now begins a lifetime of mama and daughter sewing together! It's the best! Sometimes my girls are walking about with needle and thread in hand all day long. Not even Chloe has sewn on a machine yet, I doubt I am waiting until the traditional 8th grade year to introduce this, but I did want her to get in some good years of hand sewing first.
Hope you have a wonderful happy weekend Nicole! XOXO

It is so adorable to watch them do these little sewing projects with such big vision. For me it is hard to not step in when the project looks like it's heading south. But it does always turn out to their delight, which is all that matters!

Fantastic! I remember sewing dolly clothes when I was little. It's how I learned to sew! My mom didn't teach me how to use her machine until I was eight.

What a talented little girl! I remember when my grandma taught me to sew by hand - I couldn't get enough of it either! I'm excited to see what other creations K comes up with. Have a lovely Memorial Day weekend - hopefully the rain gives us a bit of a reprieve. =)

I still have doll clothes I sewed and knitted as a child. I treasure them as the beginnings of two skills I am so grateful to have and that bring me such joy, even 25 years later! Good for your little one! I can imagine the thrill you get...my 3 year old girl "knits" by wrapping yarn around and around a knitting needle...she's always so proud. Can't wait till they're old enough for me to pass down what I learned from my mom and her mom....

Oh, how sweet! I have been thinking it's time for my soon to be five yr old to do some handsewing. You've inspired me to get her started. :)

How wonderful that you gave her an alternative to the sewing machine instead of telling her to wait until she was older! She will have so much fun experimenting and making doll clothes.

My oldest enjoys making clothes for everything and everyone this way too. It is so cute to see their thinking shine through the way they have thought to create a piece of clothing...ie. armholes, or closures. I love it.
