Nesting

We are finally starting to experience the crisp, cool weather of Oregon that until now was something of fairy tales. This refreshing, brisk air is bringing me back to life, but also warning me that our family is completely unprepared for cold weather. I am knitting mittens, hats and scarves like a madwoman as well as scouring thrift stores for woolens, warm boots, jackets and sweaters. What an exciting rush of nesting this all is!

Speaking of nesting, the girls and I saw the most amazing nest on a nature walk last week. It was literally stuck on the side of a tree. I didn't have my camera with me so we decided we'd come back to it another day. When we did, it was gone. K, luckily, found it nearby on the ground. I had never seen anything like it. It was so small and flimsy, unlike nests we are used to. It was made of moss and some kind of fiber.

Amazing, isn't it?! Anyone happen to know what kind of bird makes these nests?
Since it had fallen in a high traffic area we brought it home for our make-shift nature table (more pictures of that coming next week).

Now I am off to put on my running shoes, grab a dog and head out in this beautiful weather. Have a great weekend!

Ok first of all I LOVE those little reed shoes! Do they make them in adult sizes? Who makes them?

And here's my guess on the nest (though I may be WAY off) -- marbled murrelet?

That nest is amazing! I've never seen one quite like that before. What a stunning nature table addition it is. :) I hope you'll show us your winter knits as you're working on them. Good luck with the nesting!

Those little red shoes are adorable. We are not prepared for cold weather either, although I am looking forward to it. We have been up around 90F for the past couple of days, which is way high for us up in Canada. lol The nest is so lovely. What a great addition to your nature table. xx

What a great find and a nice addition to a nature table. A chickadee or titmouse perhaps? They build moss nests lined with fur/feathers/fibers.

I love the shoes, too! I would like to have some like that, too! As for the nest, it IS fascinating. It is so perfectly straight-sided from the angle we see in the photo, it almost looks like a flowerpot with moss glued on it....and then the heavenly looking feather lining. I love it and wish you knew what kind of bird made it.

the nest is exquisite -- definitely the stuff that fairy tales are made of. We have GREAT luck finding handmade woolens at thrift stores. It always puts me in rescue mode when I see something that someone has put major time and effort into tossed aside... +Chelsea

Wow, that nest is so pretty... green and mossy and looks SO comfortable! Lucky little birds! And your nature table is lovely. I'm interested in your acorns... they look huge and I'm laughing at all the comments on the red mushroom shoes... they are adorable (I'm laughing as we are all a bunch of mushroom nuts, aren't we!)
Thank you so much for sharing on Friday's Nature Table.
Blessings and magic

Welcome to the beautiful NW!! I am just above you in WA and excited to find a kindered spirit come to our beautiful area.

That nest is incredible! I am guessing a chickadee. They are the only ones that I know of that build nests like that. Amazing find!! We just got rid of our nature table nest... the toddler got to it. ;)

Blessings,

Val

The nest is incredibly beautiful, when I first saw it I thought it was something you had felted and filled with wool! What a cozy space for a little bird family!

Thank you everyone for your responses and WELCOME to new visitors!
I am going to look into all the bird possibilities you suggested, thank you!

The red boots are K's and they are by Livie and Luca. We buy ours online. We went through 2 pairs of these actually. We were fortunate to find this second pair used. HTH!!
