Crafting On

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Let the baby knitting commence! Up first is a sweet little bonnet named Florence for a beautiful baby girl. It literally flew off my needles. I suppose all baby knits have a way of doing that. One baby gift down, about five more to go (last I counted).

The (supposed) Invasion

eclipse honeysuckle eclipse eclipse (goofy ones!) totality Totality eclipse (2 seconds after totality) About two seconds after totality

Our tiny town was in the path of totality for the Great American Solar Eclipse. For months before the big day (how have we been here months already?!), we were warned by every neighbor, every store employee, and even our postal worker to prepare for the invasion of thousands of tourists. There were town hall meetings to cover safety, our rights, and how to protect our properties (anyone else think of Gilmore Girls at the mention of town hall meeting?). Most people we spoke with planned on leaving the week before the event to escape the madness that was predicted. One man was even fearing mass destruction so he planned on taking all of the important insurance documents for his house with him. To say it was utter mayhem here just before last week seems quite fitting. So, my family and I followed the advice we were given. We stocked up on food and anything else we would need and just stayed put at our house waiting for it all to pass.

They predicted the rush to begin the Friday before and to carry on until the Tuesday afterwards. Friday came and went. Nothing. Saturday came and went. Nothing. We considered ourselves brave and went out on Sunday to attend church. There was actually less traffic and less people at church than we had ever experienced. Huh. Same for the day of the eclipse and the day after. It was like Y2K all over again! Ha! Oh well. The funny thing is, we went to get groceries the following Wednesday and the grocery stores were packed. Apparently all of us locals refused to leave our houses the whole time and then all came out the same day. A bit ironic, don't you think?

The eclipse was incredible, though. Something that we will never forget. I am so glad we were able to experience it as a family. We were all so surprised by just how dark and quiet it became at the moment of totality. Sweet Baby F began doing the sign for sleep, almost questioning if it was bedtime. Then as soon as the sun started to come back out he said, "Uh-oh!" over and over again. Talk about confusing a baby! After seeing the eclipse ourselves I totally get why people would travel for it. I find myself now daydreaming about a family trip for the next one. Who knows? Maybe we'll be the people another small town is talking about!

p.s. - I do not have the right lens for faraway photography but you can still see the tiny sun, right?

Anyone else knit while waiting for the eclipse yesterday?  I am still knitting K's birthday sweater (I know surprising, right?) but in the homestretch now. The sleeve length is completely dependent on how much yarn I have remaining.Hoping to give her long sleeves but we'll have to see.

Doing Good

spring into summer romper spring into summer romper spring into summer romper spring into summer romper spring into summer romper spring into summer romper Always running straight towards the water... pic by one of my kids *i think!* I found this photo on my camera perhaps taken by my children or one of my friend's children. Not sure who. Maybe it will forever be a great mystery! beach

Hey there! I really did intend to write this post last week but I didn't factor in that it was also Kevin's week of finals in college. In a one computer household, I think college finals should probably take a bit of precedence over blogging, don't you? Anyway, I am sorry about that.

About that birthday of mine. I will admit that ever since I first hit my thirties I haven't been as excited about aging another year. I still look forward to my children celebrating my life but I suppose I am starting to think a bit more deeply about life itself now. This birthday was no different. I found myself deep in my own head early in the morning, a tendency we introverts seem to have. I spent most of the day at home in my pajamas spending time with those I hold most dear. My children made me the sweetest cards (I meant to photograph them), all featuring the birds I love observing outside my kitchen window. The chestnut backed chickadee being the bird that all three of my older children chose to feature. The heartfelt words in K's card gave me just the perspective I needed to get out of my head. Not to mention the affirmation that I think every mother needs to hear.  You know how you work so hard to instill particular values and virtues in your children? And how you lead by example day after day but sometimes wonder if they are even catching on?  Well, her words let me know she is getting it. I have to share a few words from her card here because I never want to forget them. Lord knows I am incredibly hard on myself as a mother and reading these words from time to time just might be what I need to move forward:

I know that you are always there for me and you help me through my struggles. Many times I have seen you helping others - strangers even or C, L or Baby F. You are there when we call for help as our loving Mama. I have seen you go out of your way to make others happy. It makes me want to cry. You act like a mother to all. I know that we are struggling a little right now yet you act fine about it. You are kind, gentle, loving and so much more. Everyone loves you - at least everyone that I have ever seen you with.

My goodness, talk about children being a blessing from above! I am sure you can imagine that I cried upon reading those words. She reminded me that the purpose of each and every year I get to spend on this earth is for doing good and the more years I get to do good, the better!

After cards and cake (way too early in the day for that sugar rush; my head hurts just thinking about it), Kevin announced that we were going out to pick up lunch and bring it to a new beach we hadn't checked out yet. Getting a break from cooking is always a nice present to me so this was happy news. We picked up our food and watched the ocean waves as we enjoyed it. Afterwards Kevin mentioned there were some cute shops and thrift stores nearby.  I immediately noticed an Irish pub and shop I wanted to check out (I am always looking for things with C and Baby F's names on them). I was changing Baby F's clothes in the van and then Kevin abruptly informed me that I needed to hurry.  I picked Baby F up and turned around to hear K say, "Hey, those kids over there look like the D's." You know, their very dear friends from Portland (and their Mama is a friend of mine). "Wait! It is the D's!" Next thing I know my friend is walking up to me saying "Happy Birthday!" and all our children are smiling and amazed to see each other. This birthday surprise was not only a surprise to me but to all our children as well. None of them knew! We followed the D's back to their beach rental and literally spent the rest of the day and very late into the night with friends we had missed so dearly. It was such a joyous time filled with smiles, laughter and much needed reconnecting. What an incredible birthday I had. My heart is so full!

p.s. - Look, look! I finally had Baby F wear his Spring into Summer Romper. He is letting you know it is a bit too long in the body by holding it up as he runs. Oh well, I still think it looks adorable on him. I was aiming for more of an 18-month size but it looks like I overestimated and ended up with something closer to a 2T instead.

I am super exhausted but I just wanted to pop in quick. Kevin surprised the children and me with a wonderful gift over the weekend. I'll post more about it later in the week after Crafting On! Hope you all had a beautiful weekend!

I know I mentioned baby knitting in my last Crafting On post but I am currently waiting on Kevin to print a pattern I am wanting to use. In the meantime I am doing some birthday knitting. K's 12th (jaw drop) birthday is next month and she requested another Levenwick sweater. This time I need to use the adult sized pattern for my tall string beanie. My baby is growing up. *gulp*

Escaping the heat (and a whale!)

escaping the heat escaping the heat escaping the heat escaping the heat homemade sprinkler homemade sprinkler Okay, okay, I take back everything I said about it not feeling like summer and being too mellow here the past couple of months. Can we just go back to the steady 70 degree days, please? The temperatures soaring into the 100s last week just about did us in. Homeschooling came to a screeching halt, mostly due to my inability to concentrate in the heat, so that left the hot, rather cranky children with a lot (perhaps too much) of free time. Normally, they love playing in the sprinkler when it gets hot out but alas, our sprinkler is in storage. I rigged one out of an old water bottle bottle instead to help them keep cool while Daddy was in college. The rest of the time was at the beach.

When the temperature reached 107, I decided it was too hot to be in the house all together, let alone cook in it. I declared that we were having dinner at the beach and that dinner would be ice cream. My children may have thought I lost my marbles when I said that. K kept asking me over and over again, "Is ice cream really our dinner?" That must have been a dream come true. I love being sporadic like that with them. I think that is what makes some of the best memories. Oh, and speaking of the best memories -  my family and I saw our first whale today! It was on the drive from church in Lincoln City to Newport for our groceries. As we came up on Depoe Bay I looked out at the calm ocean water and saw water shoot up. I pointed it out to everyone and then we saw the whale's tail come out of the water. I wish we were actually out in the water or on the sand when it happened instead of driving in our van, but it was our very first whale sighting nonetheless!

Thank you for your support and understanding in your comments on my post last week. I felt pretty vulnerable and a bit silly admitting to such a small and silly thing (but boy did it seem huge to me at the time). I am happy to say I have made it out of the pit and am back to my usual self. I have been seeking and finding ways to be a blessing to others with the resources and gifts I have. There is nothing more uplifting than that!

Nearing the finish line on Baby F's cute overalls. Once I finish these I have a lot of baby knitting to do. Quite a few of my friends are either expecting or just had a baby. What a joyous time!! If that doesn't lift the spirits, nothing will!
