Crafting On

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post it on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

I finished up Baby F's adorable Mellowshorts (with some mods soon to be posted on rav) and am now starting on yet another incredibly cute overall pattern called Ola's shorts. These are being knit in gray because I just can't get enough of Baby F in that color! It seems to make his baby blues stand out even more than they already do.

The Buddy Bond

I mentioned on Instagram that my family and I were in Portland recently for a short day trip. K's beloved 8th grade buddy was graduating from high school so we wanted to make sure we were there for such an important event. K was thrilled at the thought of seeing her buddy - they still have such a special bond and K really looks up to her like a big sister. They hadn't seen one another since our last visit to Portland in 2015. She was so excited that she hardly slept a wink the night before.

We spent the days before the trip in preparation. I finished up K's dress that she requested while she sewed a gift bag for her buddy with the leftover fabric. She then tucked her most treasured nature finds into the bag, including a whole sand dollar that she found on the beach here. After she finished her treasure bag she clipped a baby spider plant from her special spider plant (she received from her 1st grade teacher on her very first day of school) and gently placed it in a pot with fresh soil and worm castings. She also picked the first rose to bloom at our house just before we left to give with her gifts.

K patiently sat through the three hour long graduation ceremony (unlike her brother that I ended up taking outside to play) and then waited in quite a long line before she was finally reunited with her buddy. Well worth the wait, of course! I hadn't seen K so happy in ages. They were able to catch up a bit and even discuss having some time together before college. K was absolutely glowing by the end of their time together. What a precious gift her buddy is to her (and the rest of us)!

From the East Coast to the West Coast

jamie visit veg*n shark buddies Two shark loving vegetarian boys (I wish we lived closer together, I think they would be the best of friends!) silly kiddos jamie visit jamie visit When your very best friend since the 4th grade texts you out of the blue to say that she is driving through your little town - you drop everything to see her. We grew up in New York together but both ended up on the west coast, her in California and me now in Oregon. Funny how that works out, huh? When I told my children who we were meeting they were so confused - how could Mama's best friend be here?? Even though they all know who she is, K is the only one to have met her and that was when she was a tiny baby. I can't believe it had been over ten years since we saw each other! It was a short visit filled with lots of catching up, laughing and yawning from exhaustion (coffee is a must next time) but one worth savoring for sure. I am feeling so very grateful!! Now to find a way to meet up more often...

And on another note I had to share this image below because well, if you know my children you know that not one of them would ever take a pacifier. K was pretending she was a pediatrician and that she took babies temperatures with a pacifier thermometer. She put a tiny bit of peanut butter on the pacifier to get him to take it (the evidence of this is all over his face and head!). say what?!

Our weather has been unseasonably cold so I rather stalled on knitting Baby F's Mellowshorts but have now decided to pick them back up. Better to have them done and waiting instead of waiting for it to get warm again and then have to finish them, right?

The weather has also been very dark making it hard to take photos but I am thankful for the skylight in the loft. It give me just a glimmer of light to work with which is better than nothing. The book underneath my knitting is currently being read by C - D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths (I love that they have the pronunciation guide in the back. I have been pronouncing Freya incorrectly for years, as have most people I know!). She is finishing up 3rd grade over the summer but I thought I would let her get a head start on some of the 4th grade reading.

What more?

mud pie mud pie mud pie mud pies mudpie mud pie mud pie IMG_0329 foxglove sink bath sink bath chews life sink bath

Children and mud pies - does it ever get old? For me, the answer would be no. I can't get enough of seeing all of my little ones outside playing in the earth together. Seeing Baby F join them for the first time just melted my heart. I could tell he was pretty proud of himself, too. It is not very often his siblings all let him get into what they are playing with.

While we were living in Idaho the weather was just too hot and our dirt was too dry so my children gave up on mud pies altogether. I think perhaps our home there was just too comfortable, too. They didn't get outside as much as they used to do (well the small yard played a part, too, I'm sure). This tiny house in Oregon is somewhat forcing them to be outside more, bringing back their wild and free spirits that I haven't seen in a long time. As of late, their play has been centered around Narnia (Little L makes quite the Reepicheep). However, two days of rain here brought about perfect mud and they went right back to their mud baking as if they had never stopped. Baby F spent almost the entire day outside with his siblings and as you can see by his face in the above photos he was not happy about having to come in to get cleaned up for dinner. Poor guy is currently cutting three molars all at once so he is having quite a rough time.

In other news, we found land that was very close to what we were looking for and surprisingly in our price range. It was five acres - a lot of it was forest (with never ending elderberry trees), but also a lot of it was cleared out, perfect for gardens and animals. It was in the middle of nowhere backing up to the Siletz river. Oh I wish you could have seen our children running and playing all over there. It was exactly what they have been needing. It brought us all so much joy. It had a manufactured house on it as well. It was small and not ideal but for the land we were very willing to take it (with hopes of building our own home on the land years down the road). After seeing it we told our realtor we wanted to place an offer right away. We contacted our mortgage company and well, to make a long story short, we didn't get it. We were approved for a certain amount of money before our move and we were counting on that still, not expecting anything to change. But our debt to income ratio changed too much over the past month due to Kevin not receiving his paychecks (glitch in the system) and having to use our credit cards for survival. So now we have to get that debt back down before we can even get a house. A big setback for sure, and it definitely dampened our spirits but you know what? This is just another bump in the road. We have each other, a roof over our heads, food in our bellies and smiles on our faces. Really, what more could we ask for?

Back to sewing. I finished up the first dress K requested (our tester) and it actually fits really well. I was hoping one dress might hold her over for a bit since, in all honesty, I am not really a fan of sewing. I love the finished product but the act of sewing itself, eh, not so much. But she has literally outgrown all of her clothes (perhaps her biggest growth spurt to date). She has been wearing the one dress I sewed her to Mass every Sunday the past three weeks (as well as every day in between). People might be beginning to wonder why, so I suppose I had better get to work on some more for her. Baby F liked the fabric she picked for this particular one. I have had that fabric stashed for years and years hoping to sew a quilted shower curtain someday but it never happened. K is helping me bust my fabric stash!
