Rag Dolls

My girls are obsessed with the Laura Ingalls-Wilder books. We have been borrowing quite a few of the series 'My First Little House Books' from the library lately. I hear them pretending to be Laura (C) and Mary (K) on a daily basis now. K even recently told Purple Grandma that she wanted us to donate our car and get a wagon and horses, instead (Me too, little one!).

I really adore how much they love these books. The stories really seem to go hand in hand with the simple life we want to live as well as with Waldorf education/living.
Well, Today K declared she wanted to wear rags in her hair to bed so she could have curls just like Mary and Laura. So I found some old scrap fabric and tied up her hair. She was thrilled!

I have to say they look rather cute on her, even with her short bangs... yes, she cut her hair, again. You can see the first time here.

C wanted to have rags in her hair, too so I found as much hair as I could and tied it up. She seemed pretty satisfied. She wants to be just like big sister, so badly.

Now to see what their hair looks like in the morning. I know they can't wait!

Oh this made me smile. It reminded me of my childhood - my mother used to set my hair this way. I LOVE Little House, but I never connected the two. Thanks for sharing this!

Yes, super cute! I like the little bangs.

I'm sure you do know we have the same horse and wagon fantasy going on over here too. (Hey, at least we really do have the horses!)

I just read your email also, I clicked on the knitting link and I don't know why but I just burst out giggling at the photo. So I guess you're right, cannot be denied.

This is supposed to be my quick reply here, 4th grade next week, as in just a few days away, I think I need to go rest now.

Lots of love to you too!

My daughter LOVED the 'My First Little House Books' also! She's 7 now, so maybe a bit old for them now.

I do love how you did their hair - I hope you post how it comes out!

So SO so SO cute! Zach talks all the time about replacing all of the cars of the world with horses.
I can't wait to see how the hair turns out! And the short bangs are very retro by the way, she is on the lead of a style wave I say!

Cute! That was one of my favorite series of books when I was little too. I had a dress-up dress and apron that I wore when I pretended to be Laura. I hope you'll post a photo of the curls in the morning.

This is so sweet - we were just talking about rag curls yesterday.

My girls are too. We have read ALL the books several times and listened to them on CD. My oldest has a shawl, braids, a bonnet, lace up black boots and has proposed only bathing on Saturday among other things! Some days we are to call her Mary or Laura.

Last year for Christmas I got them a set of Little House paper dolls. They have loved loved loved them. You might look into those.

Love this post!

Oh I can't wait to see how their hair comes out...and if they slept. I never could sleep when my hair was in curlers.

When I was little, our house was obsessed with the Little House books (our family vacations often involved visiting Little House sites)and I remember my mother putting my hair up in rag curlers for special occasions. I always loved it!

It's so fun to see your girls enjoying these books! I can't wait till W is old enough to appreciate these stories too.

I didn't even know that had a series for younger readers! My daughter is four and we just started reading Little House in the Big Woods together. I'll have to look for the other series though. She's taken to calling me Ma!

Oh, my little girls are just loving Little House books too! It just makes my heart warm to hear them pretending to be Mary and Laura. My 5 year old even got to do a week long "Old Fashion camp" at our local historical museum. Which has sparked her imagination and love of everything "old fashioned" even farther!

Oh I love this post. Rag curls always remind me of my grandmother, who did them in my hair when I was younger.

Great idea! When we start this series in January, I'll have to do this for my little girl.

We did rag curls a couple of weeks ago. I blogged about it here: http://womanwifemomma.blogspot.com/2010/08/rag-curls.html.

For my fine haired blonde girls, I found that I made way too many curls. They woke up with hair that stood straight out from their heads! However, within an hour or two, in this humidity, it settled into lovely waves.

We're going to do it together next time! Momma's hair needs some body! :)

Take care,
~carrie

Sweet sweet sweet, Nicole! I love the Little House series and Anne of Green Gables books as a kid. My girl hasn't been keen on chapter books, yet, but I am planning on starting with Little House soon, because she's so interested in things related to this time period, mothers, babies, and such.
Nicola
ps. Love the rag ties in the hair! What a grin on k!

As you know, LHOTP holds a dear, dear place in my heart. I am glad to have passed on the knowledge of those books to you and your girls. There is something extremely special about those books. Right now we are alternating between Little House and Charlotte's Web. I don't know which one I love more. I think the Little House ones, by just a nose.

I can't wait to see the pictures of the girls hair. K has snipped her hair before? Hahahha, what a little dear. She has that twinkle in her eye.

Oh, this brings back such joyful memories! What a timeless series. I have a few questions for you, though. What copy of Little House is that? It looks much more younger child friendly than I remember! I was holding off beginning the series until my son was a bit older, but how old are your girls when you introduced them? Also, it seems you are managing to do quite a lot despite your morning sickness. Funny because I feel even more productive now that I have had my third just a few months ago. Maybe it's better time management. Cheers!

Oh my gosh, they look so cute! I lived and breathed the Little House Books when I was young and still put them in my top favorite reads of all time :)

Adorable! I remember my hair being put in rags before birthday parties and special occasions, it is naturally wavy so when the rags were removed, my hair had curled up tight, then had to be teased apart and loosened. I felt like a fairytale princess! As I am sure your girls will too :)

Love laura ingalls books and still do. I was always infatuated with the book Farmer Boy just so I could read about all the homey foods that his mother would make....oh...I cut my hair when I was little too. I'm PRAYING that Trinity NEVER thinks of doing that...I'm pretty sure I would cry. :)

I think you did a great job cleaning up K's hair cutting :) My K did it before her 3rd and 4th birthdays, so her pictures were a bit funny.
Those books are just so wonderful...even the parts that are about surviving and having to eat meat just help me to understand the time and place in which the girls lived. Looking forward to seeing their curls :)

My mom used to do this when I was little and was sure I was Laura. I only have little boys, so we aren't doing rag curls, but do still love the books!

Thanks so much for sharing. I didn't even know about this book series. I tried reading the novels to my girls but books without pictures don't hold their attention for too long. Now I can't wait to check these books out at the library. Thanks again!

I keep checking back Nicole to see these sweet little rag curls! Your girls are so sweet : ) I shared this with my daughter she is ready to give them a try too! xoxo

Oh! I loved those books so much. I wore my hair in plaited braids all through fifth and sixth grade in honor of Laura and Mary. I could hardly wait until my children were old enough to have me read them to them too. There's just nothing like them. Your girls look darling. It's wonderful to see that Laura still has the same effect on kids today.

Your little girls look absolutely adorable Nicole! My mum used to do this to my hair regularly right up until I was a teenager. She used to 'rag' my hair when it was damp after the bath and then depending on how she ragged it it would either come out curly or in ringlets. When you have the section of damp hair ready for rolling onto the rag, if you twist it and then roll it up on to the rag, there will be beautiful 'sausage' ringlets in the morning that your little one will love to put her finger up inside! :)

Also, if you want another story about rag curls, there is a gorgeous story in 'My naughty little sister' by Shirley Hughes. Do you know this writer? She is very popular in the UK and her illsutrations are beautiful, very detailed and very 'real.'

Thanks everyone! Yep K cut her bangs about this time last year. They were almost all grown out. Oh well!

I am so happy to hear how many of us love these books!! They really are such pure inspiration.
The series we have been reading is called 'My First Little House Books'. I plan on giving the their first real book of hers this Christmas (Little House in the Big Woods). Thanks to Renee for helping me figure out when to start them <3

Pictures of the curls tomorrow, I promise!

We too are loveing the Little House series...just finishing the 2nd book (Little house on the prairie) - i'm still surprised that the 3yr. and almost 6 yr. old sit through listening intently to "how Pa built the door" or whatever.
Rag curls are a favorite of ours too; http://www.littlequiver.com/2009/12/im-dreaming-of-wood-christmasand-lil.html
