Family Homesteading

family homesteading family homesteading family homesteading family homesteading our chicks chickie chicken herder family homesteading My friend and homesteading extraordinaire Teri Page just released a book (that I have been looking forward to) this week - Family Homesteading. My family and I have only just begun our long anticipated homesteading adventures so this book couldn't have come at a better time. It has already become an invaluable resource for us. I have been highlighting and taking notes as I read, trying to soak in all of Teri's wisdom that she kindly shares with us all. The funny thing is, every time I put the book down, I come back to find my daughters reading it. They seem to be as enamored with the book as I am.

I recently asked Teri a couple of questions about homesteading with children, hoping to glean some of her endless knowledge on the subject. I thought some of you might be in or near the same place as my family with homesteading and wanted to share her answers with you.

At what age do you think children can start with animal chores - specifically chickens and what do you think is the best way for them to start?

Introducing children to animal chores can begin at a very early age - we first brought our babies to the barn as infants! - but actually entrusting the care of animals to the children is something that you'll have to evaluate on a case by case basis, based on maturity, interest, and ability. My kids began helping with chicken chores from a very early age. Their first job was to "socialize" the chicks by holding them! As toddlers, the kids accompanied us to the barn and carried the eggs back in a harvesting basket, tossed straw on the coop floor, and carried bowls of food scraps. Once they were tall enough to reach latches, they began opening and closing the coop and feeding the flock. Now that they are older (7 and 10), my kids are more engaged with the day-to-day of chicken care than I am. They know each bird by name and personality, and are the first to spot health problems or food shortages. I still enjoy accompanying them to the coop, but they are the chickens' primary caretakers.

How can you motivate your children to help out on the farm/homestead, for example, when they would rather be in the house reading?

This is a great question, and I'm afraid that I don't have a magic answer for you! Kids have their own interests and hobbies, and I think it is important to give them the space and time to cultivate their own interests. On the other hand, the family has responsibilities, and kids are part of the family, so can be expected to contribute according to their age and ability. Some things that have worked for us: We have always tried to make farm and homestead chores about connection and fun. We plan the garden to include favorite vegetables, walk to the garden together to harvest, and cook meals that include contributions from their beds. When we were milking cows early in the morning, before the kids were awake enough to chat, we set them up in comfy chairs in the barn to listen to Sparkle Stories. Most importantly, we try to strike a balance between asking them to do chores on their own, and making it something we do together. I have had some of my best conversations while accompanying my daughter to the chicken coop. My end goal is for my children to experience a connection to nature, to the seasons, and to the other members of our family; it's not to raise little homesteaders (although I'd certainly love that!). I also want to cultivate a sense of responsibility and an ability to work hard and follow through with commitments. So I have to continually assess whether or not their contributions to farm/homestead work are meeting these goals, or if we need to make adjustments.

Terri also has a free e-course available to go along with her book here : http://familyhomesteadingbook.com/ Go check her book out!

Real Food on a Budget

drying herbs in our kitchen window real food on a budget mint our strawberries are still going strong real food on a budget

Most of you already know of my love for real, organic food. I have been carrying on and on about it in this space for years now. I am also pretty sure you know of the importance of budgeting in my family - more people means more love but also more money spent on food. Let's face it - eating healthy, real food and saving money don't exactly go together, unless you think about the money you'll save in the future on doctor's bills. However I am talking about the present. The time when we only have X amount of money to spend on groceries that need to last us Y amount of days.

I confess as hard as I try to budget (and believe me I put a lot into it - hours each week), there are weeks where we'll eat like kings for a few days only to find out we are short on money towards the end of the week and end up having to eat ramen noodles to get by. We are essentially undoing all the good of the real food we previously ate with the processed junk. Ridiculous, right?! I just find myself confused and thinking something's gotta give.

With that in mind, you can imagine my excitement when I saw that one of my favorite authors is coming out with a book all about eating real food on a budget. 😍 Lisa Leake's new book 100 Days of Real Food on a Budget is available for pre-order now and will be released on Tuesday August 14th. I had the pleasure of getting an advance copy in the mail just the other day (I may or may not have jumped up and down and squealed like a schoolgirl when it arrived). I have been reading through it every chance I get. The recipes all look incredibly scrumptious and I look forward to trying them as soon as possible - the Southwest Salad is calling my name. For my fellow vegan and vegetarian friends this cookbook has quite a few recipes to meet our needs and most can easily be adapted (ie. use homemade sprouted almond milk in place of the cow's milk). It contains recipes for other dietary restrictions as well. Equally exciting though is the entire first chapter. Lisa shares her budgeting tricks, ways to lower your grocery bill, and meal plans that even include average costs as well as a meal plan template. She also has a supermarket coast comparison chart that really opened my eyes. Granted prices vary depending on where you are living but it still gives you a good idea of where to shop for particular items. Every family that wants to eat healthy but feels like they never could due to expense needs a copy of this book. It really can be done!

Here is a sample recipe from 100 Days of Real Food on a Budget. Click on it to see a bigger version.

Oatmeal Cookie Energy Bites recipe

For once I look forward to sitting down and planning our meal plan and budget for the upcoming week. I feel like perhaps now I can finally conquer the beast that is eating healthy while staying within our means.

I am giving away a copy of Lisa Leake's first book (a big game changer and personal favorite of my family) 100 Days of Real Food on my Instagram account. Be sure to check it out!

Set a Pretty Table

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to my latest sponsor Set a Pretty Table:

Set-a-Pretty-Table2

Set a Pretty Table  - 52 Weeks of Enthusiasm and Nourishment and Thoughtful Intention for Tending the Hearth you call Home.

Within the very word Hearth , we find Heart and Art ~ (heart)h and he(art)h

Set A Pretty Table will inspire you through the 52 weeks of tending the hearth, (heart)h, (he(art) with a simple, enthusiastic reflection, tip or suggestion for each week to support you to create an atmosphere in the home that reflects your values...

-Every Sunday you receive an inspiration, suggestion, tip or reflection.
-A private meeting place to connect and share over the topic each week

The messages encourage and inspire you to take simple steps to bring beauty and rhythm to your life in very simple ways. They will inspire you to look within, as well as to stretch yourself outward to try new things: to paint, draw, color, sing, model or become more aware of the natural rhythms surrounding you.

Call it "Where the rubber meets the road," the way to put into practice what you hold dear.

Simple. Slow. Satisfyingly.

Each week brings its own unique and distinct inspiration.

I invite you to join this community for the next 52 weeks.

"the ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest." ~ Thomas Moore

I was inspired to create this community, by the notion that it is attention to the little things in life that count. That the little things matter the most. The ordinary arts.

That's why I am calling it Set a Pretty Table. A table is a place where we come together to nourish ourselves.

To set a pretty table is to make an effort to bring rhythm, beauty and our love, manifest as attention, to the moment.

Each person's perspective of beauty is unique.

It is limitless, full of possibility.

Beauty shows up in the small, simple touches, as well as the grandiose and passionate statements.

Beauty, and love, are everywhere.

This course is meant as an inspiration to bring it to the table.

Both literally and figuratively.

As individuals. As parents. As teachers. As caregivers. As grandparents. As hearth tenders. As heart tenders. As artists. As soulful beings. As human beings.

When we approach our days with this in mind, we are creating mindfulness. It helps us to become more present in the moment.

Join a community of hearth tenders and home makers to journey around the year together with 52 weeks of Set a Pretty Table.

:: Bring a Friend :: Because this is a brand new program, and a brand new year, and it can be fun to try new things with a friend, I am inviting new members to sign up with a friend, with a two for one enrollment opportunity. One person enrolls for $99 and sends me the name of the second person who is sharing the membership. This offer is on the table until January 15th.

Warmly, Lisa

I am enthusiastically taking this wonderful course my friend Lisa is offering and I hope to see some of you there!

 magic

Hearth Magic - As new mother with little ones, I often felt isolated and disconnected from my home and tasks as a mother. I felt as though there was “something” missing from our lives. Was there a secret ingredient that God gave successful and happy mothers that I was lacking? I know from conversations with many mothers that this is a common concern. We know that life at home will never perfect, but is it possible to create Magic within the rhythms of daily life and festival seasons of the year? Absolutely! A sense of rhythm, tradition and magic was a part of my grandmother’s home. This “feeling” was as reliable as expecting the air to be crisp in October, or knowing when the full moon would appear- it was also just as magical. She was not a “Waldorf Mama” but she understood that children thrive on a nourishing diet of family traditions and celebrations. As I look back on my magical childhood, it is easy to see which traditions nurtured our family and have stayed with me.

My Etsy shop, Hearth Magic, has been a wonderful outlet for me to create beautiful paintings, home helps and festival guides that celebrate where I have come from and the type of home I strive for, inspired by all of the wonderful things I have learned along my homeschool journey.

Knecht Ruprecht Waldorf Dolls {giveaway!}

Happy Martinmas everyone!! We had a beautiful lantern walk that I hope to share with all of you soon but I first wanted to share a very exciting giveaway!

 photo KnechtRuprechtDollsSponsorshipButton_zpsmhmw2emd.jpg

My dear friend Marie of Knecht Ruprecht Waldorf Dolls has released a beautiful new Waldorf doll pattern and kit, just in time for holiday gift giving. I have one and can not even begin to describe just how beautiful the materials are in person. I can't wait to make it for our little miracle baby.

In Marie's words:

marie3

Often a doll-friend accompanies a child through the whole of childhood as loyal companion and thus it should be carefully chosen. A snuggle dolly is a good choice for a first doll. It has a soft, cuddly body and a pixie hat like the Knecht Ruprecht Snuggle Doll and it can easily be taken along everywhere. It can be wrapped in its own cuddly body fabric and thus be in bed, and it takes on trusted, comforting scents to have nearby where ever one goes.
It is particularly good when this important companion is personally made. This guide book provides a way to make this possible.

marie5

Step by step instructions including patterns for the original Knecht Ruprecht Snuggle Doll A first doll with a soft cuddly body and a pixie hat
Richly illustrated.
Step by step instructions.
50 pictures and detailed photos.
Suitable for beginners.
Instant Download Tutorial

marie

This PDF EBook includes a 25 page detailed tutorial for sewing your own Babies First Snuggle Doll. It is designed elaborately and contains more than 50 detaild pictures to follow step by step. It also contains information about the meaning of dollplay in Waldorf Education, about Basic Sewing Techniques for dollmaking, about resources for doll making materials and an illustrated guide to washing cloth dolls.

marie4

When I make the Knecht Ruprecht Snuggle Dolls in my own workshop, I use GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic velour fabric made from pure cotton and Swiss cotton doll tricot. I fill the head and body base with pure wool fleece. Often it can be hard to come by the kind of high quality, tested organic fabrics one would like to use for such a special task and this can be frustrating. For this reason I have put together DIY Fabric and Material packs of the finest quality materials to match the requirements of the Doll Making Guide for the Knecht Ruprecht Snuggle Doll.

These packs come in the three colours; moss green, sea blue or rose. A piece of GOTS certified organic cotton velour, a piece of GOTS certified cotton doll tricot for the inner head/face and a piece for the outer head, with some pure wool fleece for the filling of the head and body bit. In the packs I have also included the yarn for binding the doll and the cheek blush for the magic last touches. They are packed beautifully in a hand stamped paper bag decorated with a matching picture of a Knecht Ruprecht Snuggle Doll made out of the materials you will find in the pack.

Marie has kindly offered a babies first doll kit featuring her snuggle doll and tutorial to one of you!

Remembrances, AtTheCrossroads {giveaway!}

I am pleased to share this week's giveaway from Remembrances, AtTheCrossroads on Etsy. Shop owner (and someone I consider an all around creative genius!) Natalie is with us today to share a bit more about her shop. Welcome Natalie!

 Atthecrossroads

How did your business begin?
The starting point for my business was a handful of years ago.  The company I work for was having some difficulties and I didn't know from one day to the next how much longer I was going to have my job.  This was made even more stressful by the fact that my husband works for the same company.  With two young children, we were seriously at risk of losing both incomes at once.  Opening my etsy shop gave me something else to focus on, even if just for a few minutes a day.  It has changed and evolved since then, completely becoming my passion.  Even though I still have that same "day job", I dream of being able to turn my own little business into my full time job.
giveaway on frontier dreams! What are your biggest influences?
There are so, so many.  I find inspiration everywhere around me.  Spending time outside always gives me ideas I want to turn into reality, and influences the direction of my work.  You'll find a lot of leaves, flowers, and natural elements on my pieces.  Fabric is another big inspiration.  The texture, the prints and patterns, and even the way the pieces fit together into a three dimensional item definitely influence some of my pieces.

Where did your business name come from?
My business name (Remembrances) comes from Shakespear's Hamlet... "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance; pray, Love, remember:  and there is pansies. That's for thoughts."
We read it in high school english class and that line has stuck with me ever since. The name of my etsy shop (AtTheCrossroads) comes directly from the way I was feeling when I first opened it... I felt I was standing at crossroads in my life and had to choose a direction to follow.

What is your favorite product that you offer?
My favourite product changes with each new item I make, but the small buttons are definitely at the top of the list... any of the small buttons.  They are definitely my favourite to make. These are my current favourite:
IMG_20151008_091958
stamped pieces -the vases, yarn bowls, and serving dishes the way the glaze shifts with the depth of the texture.  This picture was taken while the plate was still in the kiln, and it pretty much sold straight from there (I have very few pictures of this style of work.
IMG_20150415_133300
And my favourite to wear is this one:
IMG_20150829_144124
I wear it almost every day.
Do you have a favorite quote you would like to share?
My favourite quote is by Fra Giovanni (1533). It's part of a larger quote, but my favourite line is "The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, yet, within our reach, is joy.  Take joy."
Take Joy!  Look for it, find it, and take it.  Every day.

Today Natalie is kindly offering the following: flower and leaf button set First Prize: A special set of flower and leaf pottery buttons hand made specifically for Frontier Dreams readers for this give-away.
loose buttons
Second Prize:  Two button cards (winner's choice) from AtTheCrossroads on Etsy.

Wiwiurka (Amazing wooden trapeze bar and postcard frame giveaway!)

Today's incredible giveaway is from Wiwiurka who offers handmade wooden play structures and heirloom toys. We have their trapeze bar and wooden climber and I just can not say enough good things about them! All three of my squirrels children spend a good portion of their days playing on them. Climbing is such an important developmental activity for children. My children had endless trees to climb back in Oregon but here in Idaho tree sightings are few and far between, and when we do see them, most are not suitable for climbing. I am so grateful for Wiwiurka's wooden climber because of this. Now my children get the climbing they need, even in the suburban desert!
In their own words:

Tell us a bit more about yourselves:
Ana: I am a Mom of three little girls who are my main inspiration. I am behind the sales, promotion and custom service of our family business. I enjoy crafting more than anything else in the world, lol. We live in a quaint Mexican mountainous village. Surrounded by the beauty and calmness of the forest. L on his Wiwiurka trapeze bar How did your business begin?
Several years ago, my husband came up with the idea to build wooden playgrounds using reclaimed wood from his tree work. The first swing set was made when my eldest daughter was 2 months old. Eventually the idea of the Climber /Wiwiurka Monkey Bars were born.
Marek: (who is from Germany), Climbing Trees is part of my work, which I have enjoyed since childhood. Even though climbing is essential in proper development and gross motorskills; children no longer have time or opportunities to climb trees. Now as a team, we spend our days thinking of, sketching, making and testing new playstrcutures and wooden toys. Most of our toys are made from the reclaimed wood of avocado, oak, ash, guavo, citrus and cedar trees. C at the top of the Wiwiurka wooden climber What are your biggest influences?
The beauty of the forest and the organic shapes from the trees.

Where did your business name came from?
Since I love to climb trees, squirrel seemed appropriate. To honor my Polish heritage, I chose squirrel in Polish-Wikiwurka.

What is your favorite product?
The wooden climber. We never tire of watching children using it. It is a must in every home, day care and school. It's such a beautiful piece; also made from reclaimed wood. Since it's such a popular product, we are currently out of stock! Though coming soon!

A warm welcome to my latest sponsor:

wiwiurka
The Wiwiurka adventure began for Ana and Marek, the husband and wife team, and the creative brains and hands behind the company when their oldest daughter was born. Now with three beautiful daughters as their inspiration, the stay-at-home parents have lots of fun designing and making wooden toys and play structures all the while keeping in the beauty, safety, and functionality of their woodwork. The family resides in the mountain of Tepoztlan, Mexico, where they enjoy their peaceful days surrounded by the beauty and calmness of the forest, and the sounds of the farm animals nearby. The naturally shaped wood used is harvested and seasoned by Marek, a woodcraftsman that was a landscape designer in Germany.
