This is the way we bake our bread (while keeping Bubba busy)

005 004 100

It's no secret that the girls and I love to bake. It's an addiction and comfort for me, all in one. I have cherished memories from when I was a little girl of spending my summer days at my grandparents and watching my Grandma bake. I don't remember if I helped at all or not, but I do remember her constantly in her kitchen and the sweet smells that were always lingering in her home (thanks to all of her baking). Now that I think back to it, it seems as if baking was the thing to do on her street. I can remember going to visit any of her neighbors and all of them would welcome me in their homes with fresh baked goods to offer. Oh I miss that. Such a different time back then. Nowadays neighbors barely acknowledge each other, let alone have deep and lasting friendships.

Sorry, getting all nostalgic there. Back to baking - It seems like at the most chaotic and trying times I find myself with the sudden urge to bake something. Who knows, maybe that's something I picked up from Grandma. This usually just adds to the chaos with the mess baking brings but it also brings my girls and I close, which makes it all worth it. Bread baking, especially, is a favorite around here. I enjoy that it involves my girls working with their hands by kneading and forming the dough. C and I make bread dough every Thursday at our parent/child class. They don't have an oven to bake it there so we bring it home to finish up. As soon as we park our van in the garage the girls are gone in a flash bringing the bread dough to the kitchen to knead. They spend a good half hour kneading and forming the dough into shapes (last week they had snowman bread) and then we bake it and have it with dinner.

Today they had a little helper, and by helper I mean Baby L reaching and screaming for their dough. They try to be patient with him but they can only take so much, so I redirect him. As you know he loves food and these brown rice puffsare a particular favorite of his (We have used these with all three of our children in lieu of Cheerios or other finger foods). They kept him happy and busy long enough for the girls to get their bread in the oven, and for me to snap an excessive amount of pictures to remember his cute eating habits. He loves to stand and eat when he has snacks. Maybe he's doing his own form of strength training.

He seems to love food more than my girls did as babies, yet he is the smallest of my children. Both girls reached twenty pounds by about four months in age but this little guy still hasn't gone past eighteen pounds at a year old. He seems to be taking after me in that regard, I was a teeny baby too (while the girls were more like Kevin as a baby - cute round, roly polies). He's such a little peanut, I love it. It feels as if he is staying my little baby even longer.

Have a great weekend everyone. I have some good news to share with you this upcoming week and I can not wait!

Ahem

I am pushing myself as far as I can, chugging away on C's birthday present. I dubbed it the 'C Ingalls Wilder'. I can't get over how ridiculously cute this is. I really want to finish it up so I can see it in all of it's glory on C. I know it will be just perfect. I feel like I should include some kind of Laura Ingalls Wilder gift to go with it, but what? We have her booksand the paper dollsalready - any suggestions?

I am using my leftover Shalom yarn to make this even more special for her. The girls' both love it when they get something knit out of the same yarn that was used for someone else in the family. The little things that make them happy!

The funniest thing happened today as I was taking these pics. Well it's not really funny but I am trying to laugh at it all. Using my freshly repaired and back from the shop 50mm lens, I perched on top of our coffee table to take just a couple of quick photos. If you have ever used a 50mm lens then you know how you really have to back up quite a bit from your subject to get it in the shot - hence the standing on the coffee table. Well, as I was coming down from the coffee table I tipped it causing the table, myself and my camera to come down with a big thump. The table survived, I survived, my camera appears to have survived (I'll need to play with it more later to be certain) but my lens did not. I saw that the filter was shattered which is not too big of a deal but then I tried to focus the lens and it was jammed. So, back to the shop it goes. In the mean time I shall just have to practice patience. I will keep calm and just craft away my woes. Although, this really tempts me to go further in to debt with my credit card and buy a wide angle lens to use, but I know I can not and should not. Kindly shake me a few times to remind me I can't let us go further into debt!!

I keep forgetting to snap pics of the girls' water bottle carriers from the root children. I'll try to remember at some point this week.

The seven year change

There are some changes going on around here. K is now smack dab in the middle of the 7 year change. She has been experiencing it in bits and pieces since she was about 5 1/2 but now she is fully immersed. Having the privilege to watch her go through such a big change is really breathtaking. She is such a thoughtful, wise and empathetic little person, she has really stepped up with helping me around the house, and takes such pleasure in taking care of her younger siblings. She is really coming into her own now. Of course every phase of life has it's bumps in the road and I am thankful for the never ending wisdom of her teachers and this book minus the parenting advice in it,(this one, too!) they recommended to me, as well. It's funny to think back when I first discovered Waldorf I thought that the 7 year change didn't happen until the child lost their milk (baby) teeth. I've been learning a lot since then. K is a lot like me in many ways, and I think the timing of her losing her milk teeth will be similar to mine, too. I lost mine pretty late compared to others and had quite a few of them pulled.

The changes of the season find us looking for any excuse to be outside. This weekend was beautiful with only a half of a day of rain. We took the opportunity to explore areas we haven't seen before.

I have been working on some things in the girls' room. Big changes there, for sure. For me, changes and messes go hand in hand so right now it's just a bit chaotic in there.

Baby L is teething so needless to say the poor guy is clingy right now. As I was trying to work on the girls' room today nothing I did seemed to make him happy. I found myself talking to him saying "What do you need from me little Bubba?". Then K came in the room and without saying a word she picked Baby L up and carried him into the kitchen. I quietly followed her curious as to what she was doing. She saw me peeking in on her and she said "He seemed like he was hungry so I thought I would share some food with him." Let me tell you, he was one happy little guy with her. He adores her so much. They have quite a tight bond. She understands him as much as I do, sometimes (like today) perhaps even more than I do! Thank God, for her patience and clarity, I hope she hangs on to them as she grows older.

Spring morning

The Root Childrenvisited us early in the morning on our rainy first day of spring. They tried to hide their gifts in clever yet visible spots in our front yard but the rain made it a bit tricky. They kept track of exactly where they left all of their goodies just in case the little ones needed some help finding them. Then they waited, and waited and waited. Baby L awoke and did some waiting of his own. Finally the girls woke up, got dressed and dashed outside. Even though it was very early in the morning and still rather dark outside it was a little bit too late for one of their gifts. A cheeky squirrel (quite possible the plumpest one I have seen yet) took off up a tree with the children's honey sticks, laughing and swishing his bushy tail the whole time. Oh well, our girls don't mind sharing with our friends of the forest.

The weather continues to play games on us. It snowed all day yesterday (melting instantly as it hit the ground) and then we had a few inches here this morning. It was all gone by lunch time today and it became a sunny spring-like day. In fact it was so nice outside, you would have never known it snowed if it wasn't for this little snowman stranded in the middle of our creek.

C has picked up the art of skipping. She practices all day long. Her excitement over this new found skill is contagious. I have found myself skipping a few happy steps of my own. Baby L, on the other hand, has started a habit of only sleeping every other night lately. It is quite the peculiar pattern, I must say. He must be on the verge of something - I just don't know what it is yet. My girls were and still are heavy sleepers. They slept in bed with us for the first few years of their lives (just like Baby L does and will). They would wake in the night but it would just be to nurse back to sleep. I would be on autopilot nursing them as I slept so I was always well rested. Baby L is very different, though. When he wakes up(usually around 12:30) he is up for two - four hours. Have any of your children done this? Were you able to help them into a different sleeping rhythm? Please do share how! I am not saying there is anything wrong with the way he sleeps, and even if I am exhausted - I am always so happy to see his sweet smiling face... but since I am going cross-eyed typing this, I think some sleep might do me good.

Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

This weeks KCCO post will be short and sweet told (mostly) through photographs. You see, it's the first day of spring and I procrastinated finishing up any 'root children projects' I had going until... now. ahem.

A project K and I made together using this fun fabricand the cards (I later laminated) from here. Notice the piece I need the most is on top ;) Not only did my girls get a cute game out of this project but it brought about some much needed one-on-one time with K. She was pretty proud of it, too.
