Their Magic Sticks

A few weeks before our little L was born, K's teacher gave me the perfect story to tell the girls in preparation. It is called 'The Magic Stick' and it is actually from the book 'Healing Stories for Challenging Behaviour'.

The first time I told the story both of my girls seemed to hang on to every word. It's about a little girl who finds a stick in her garden. It sings to her, 'Wrap me up in colors bright; keep me safe both day and night - And when there's magic in the air, I'll lead you to a treasure fair!'. She decides it is a magic stick and brings it inside with her. She wraps it up in her mother's wool roving and keeps it in a special place on her nightstand. It would wake her up in the morning singing, 'Today there's magic in the air, I'll lead you to a treasure fair!' and she would follow wherever it led her. The first morning it lead her to bird feathers in the garden and she decorated it with them. The next morning it lead her to shells on the beach and she again adorned it with them and then lastly it lead her to her parents' room where she found her new tiny baby sleeping between them. She thought 'this is indeed a treasure fair' and held up her magic stick for the little baby to see. The magic stick continued to bring her to many treasures fair but finding a new baby in her parents' bed was her most favorite treasure fair of all.

We told this story over and over again for many, many nights.

Then one day at school on our way to the car K stopped and picked up a stick and said it was her magic stick. C (always wanting so badly to be just like big sister) immediately picked up a stick as well and said it was her magic stick.
We brought them home and pulled out some of my wool roving stash, some seashells we collected last year at the coast, and 2 very special peacock feathers that I gathered years ago while living at an ashram.

Just like the story, the first wrapped their sticks in the wool roving. As they did this I drilled small holes into their seashells (let me tell you, they are tougher to drill through than they look!) and then they threaded their shells onto wool yarn and wrapped them around their sticks as well. Finally, they added their feathers and then they were finished.

They both carried their magic sticks around the house singing, 'Today there's magic in the air, I'll lead you to a treasure fair!'.
Needless to say they were a big hit. K even brought her stick to school the next day to show her teachers. I think the act of making their own magic sticks really helped to bring the story to life for them and engaged their senses.

When L was born both girls had their special magic sticks with them to show him, just like the little girl in the story. K said her favorite 'treasure fair' was finding L. Talk about making a Mama's heart swoon!!

Their magic sticks now live on their nightstand in a special vessel I felted just for that purpose (rav notes here). I hope they see them and remember their baby brother crossing the rainbow bridge onto earth for a long time.

Handmade Holiday...

aka: Christmas in March. Yeah, I feel pretty ridiculous posting our Christmas handmades this late but I still felt the desire to share them. I hope you will humor me.
Our Christmas was entirely handmade and I would say about 95% of it didn't cost us a thing, we just used items we already had in the house. I think this may be my favorite Christmas yet, too, because so much thought and love was put into everything, even more so than usual. Honestly, I am really beginning to see hardships as gifts and blessings in disguise.

First up is this sweet little package that K brought home with her the last day of school before holiday break. We were not to open it until Christmas morning and oh was that hard for this Mama!!

Inside was this beautiful glass candle holder she had made. It even had a tea light candle she made, as well. It was such a perfect and beautiful gift. I will always treasure it.

Next is C's gift for K. We made her homemade chap stick (using this recipe that we just happened to have all the ingredients for). She loved it and I think it may become a holiday tradition to make.

For Daddy the girls and I made him peppermint bark, his wintertime addiction, using this recipe but altering it with white chocolate chips to save money (yes, Soulemama saved us this year with her recipes! Thank you Amanda!!) He devoured it pretty fast and has been asking for more.

For C, I knit up a new Gnomie, gnomie, gnome hood since her other one was getting small (ravelry notes here). I used the leftover yarn from K's gift which worked out perfect because they love to match and C usually wants whatever K has ;) A big thank you to Shelley for her inspiration and help with my rainbow projects.

C is very into funny faces when it comes to picture taking time now

Lastly - for K, I knit her a rainbow poncho (ravelry notes here)to help keep her warm and to wrap her in the warmth and security of the rainbow bridge she once traveled on 5 years ago.

What did I tell you about C and the camera?!

I unfortunately do not have photos of the sweet gifts K made for C and Daddy. She finger knitted them necklaces and then attached some pendants she made out of modeling beeswax. Daddy's was blue yarn with an angel pendant and C's was rainbow yarn with a heart pendant. The cats have since lost these little treasures, but hopefully they will turn up again soon!
To close out the Christmas season *ahem* here are a couple last photos:

Thank you for putting up with my tardiness this Winter and hopefully I will be able to get back on track with Spring's arrival. This weekend the Root Children are making their appearance and I have been busy in preparation for them. Have a beautiful weekend everyone and I will be back *fingers crossed* next week.

Oh the Weather Outside was Frightful (and Absolutely Beautiful)

...but the fire was so delightful!

The first week after L was born was celebrated by King Winter with snow, snow and more snow. It was such a blessing. The girls had the week off from school which meant lots of time to play in that wonderful snow. It literally snowed every day that week, even if it was only for a few minutes some of the days. Kevin, the girls and our dogs had a blast enjoying our winter gift as much as possible while L and I stayed warm by the fire enjoying the beauty and fun from the window. It really couldn't get any more perfect.

I'll be back again soon with those really late Christmas pics I promised as well as some of L's knitted goodness.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you everyone for your warm wishes and congrats. We read and savored every single one and plan on saving them in L's baby book. We are so blessed for kind souls like all of you!

L's hat (because so many of you asked) is a ruskovilla silk cap. Our dear friend Tiffeni gifted it to us.

Let LIGHT shine

Saturday, Feb 19th light filled our lives once again. After a fast labor and beautiful water birth our sweet little winter boy (!) crossed over the rainbow bridge and into our arms.

*cough* Please don't mind my crazy ponytail hair action above!
We gave our sweet boy a Latin name that is the masculine form of Lucia (As in St. Lucia), and it means light. Not only is he filling our lives with light and happiness but his birth month of February also marks the beginning of the return of the sun after months of darkness. As you can see, his name seemed so very appropriate for him.

We are all so smitten with this little guy. He adores K and her singing.

He was 8lbs 11 oz at birth, our biggest baby yet, so he just barely fit into some of his mama made clothes.

Oh how I love little tiny baby legs and feet

...not to mention cute little fingers!

Welcome to the world!!
