Martinmas Prep & Pumpkin Picking

Glimmer lantern glimmer,
Little stars a shimmer.
Over meadow moor and dale,
flitter, flutter elf in veil.
Pee-witt, pee-witt, tick a tick a tick,
rou-cou, rou-cou.

Glimmer lantern glimmer,
Little stars a shimmer.
Over rock and stock and stone,
Wander, tripping little gnome.
Pee-witt, pee-witt, tick a tick a tick,
rou-cou, rou-cou.
- Traditional Waldorf Martinmas song (C's favorite one)

As I mentioned before lantern season is here. It's one of our favorite times of the year. Making lanterns is a huge part of celebrating Autumn and Winter in Waldorf communities. The sun has left us for these months and so we bring our inward light out.
Since Martinmas is fast approaching (next week!), I thought I'd share some of our lanterns from the past.

First we have the 'traditional' autumn lantern - the Jack O Lantern. This is the one K made at the Harvest Festival at the beginning of October.

Next are the two lanterns we made last year. A wet on wet water color lantern and a paper mache jar lantern.

A few of our star lanterns. We had a couple over the years but I went a bit crazy this year and made a ridiculous amount of them. If I remember correctly, these are traditionally done in eighth grade in the Waldorf schools. Definitely not a project for little ones but you could use their wet on wet paintings to make them. I think they would be even more special and beautiful that way. Our school store owner really showed me the secrets to making these lanterns perfect : a compass and a bone folder (my bone folder is made from wood and belonged to Kevin's Nana). I am debating if I should post a tutorial for these fun Martinmas lanterns or not. I had a couple other lantern tutorials I was hoping to post before next week but haven't had the chance to work on yet...

I thought I would post a few pics from our pumpkin picking adventures last Friday, as well.

Pumpkin fun!

I'll be back next week with more lantern fun. Have a great weekend everyone!

Good morning! I am a recent reader of your blog, but it really makes my morning when you have a new post! I for one would really appreciate a tutorial for the Martinmas lanterns. I love the way they look, have tons of watercolour painting at my disposal and have been looking for a tutorial for quite some time. Thanks for all you do!

Oh, I know our family for one would LOVE to see a tutorial for the star lanterns. We live without a waldorf community, and cobble together what traditions we can, each one filling us up. We've made the balloon/tissue paper lanterns before, but as my big kids get bigger, more challenging ideas stir their imagination.
Blessings!

I would just LOVE a post on star lanterns! I was hoping to make some this year, but haven't found directions in any of my books. I just love your blog and read it regularly; thanks for taking the time to share.

I vote for a star lantern tutorial! I was hoping to make some for the first time this year. :)

We're still deciding what kind of lanterns to do with our homeschooling group this year. We did the tissue paper on balloon ones last year and tissue paper on jars the year before. We're leaning towards carving turnip lanterns this year.

I LOVE the picture of C holding on to daddy's finger! Chessa still does that to us all the time, and it has to be a particular finger, and such a tight grip!

Your star lanterns are beautiful, I think I am going to make another attempt this weekend. For my practice one I was trying with just a piece of construction paper, I wonder if it would be easier with the thicker watercolor paper. I just didn't want to sacrifice one without know if it would work. But surely it will...

Your pumpkin patch girls are adorable, and so is your Little Red Riding Hood!

I had even missed your beautiful birthday post. But hooray, I finally wrote back to you!

XOXOXO

posting a tutorial would be amazing. cant tell you how many people have asked me for one after those lanterns I made last year for eden's class. I will use it for sure as I cant find my copy of the last one. and yes, exact measurements and folding strongly make great ones! love your colors! inspiring! ;)

All of your lanterns are beautiful! I have been searching for a star lantern tutorial and haven't found one.....i'm sure many people would appreciate it. We have so many wet on wet watercolors, and i wanted to make a star lantern for each of my girls with their paintings.

My girls have been working on their lanterns in school this week. It's one of our favorite seasons as well! Enjoy.

Your family visits some of my favorite places!!! :) Your pumpkin is wonderful. We are also making lanterns, the tin can variety, and will have a lantern walk at my home in a couple weeks (it was supposed to be Saturday but I spent the night in the ER instead). It also looks like you found a sunny day, rare commodity these days! The gnome/pixie hat is wonderful

Did you knit your youngest's hood? I have been wanting to make something similar for my boys, would you by chance be able to share the details?
Oh and the lanterns are beautiful.
