A Bat's House

Halloween day started out with last minute decisions on K's costume (She ended up being a butterfly) and pumpkin carving. We had fun deciding on the pumpkin's face. All four of us sat at the girls table and drew a pumpkin face. In the end we let K pick and she liked Daddy's the best.

Carving was followed by a visit to our Farmers Market for trick or treating...

where C and K were given beautiful beeswax butterflies by our local bee keeper. This was the best treat of all! The girls loved smelling them over and over again.

After a yummy homemade soup dinner we went out for trick or treating,

K's face says it all (and sadly this is the only decent pic I got of her in her costume), we were utterly confused. There was not a single soul out trick or treating on our street and no one answered their doors. We tried a couple more streets and found a total of 4 houses that welcomed trick or treaters. We called it quits after that, the girls were exhausted from all that walking. Kevin and I felt horrible for them but the girls didn't seem to care, they were perfectly content with those 4 houses. So it all worked out. We got home and K emptied out her trick or treat bag for the Halloween Fairy. C's candy was left out as well.

Once the girls were in bed I rushed to finish a present from the Halloween fairy. I finished it up and then realized I couldn't have one gift for the girls to share, they would fight like cats and dogs over it! So I dug out the box to pull out another gift. The box is a box hidden away from the girls filled with a few random presents for times like this. Most of the presents are for when the girls are older that I just had to get (because of a good deal or some other reason I justified in my head) but there are a few for now, too. I searched through the box and found the perfect thing for C. I knew K would love what I made so I had to let her have that. I ran upstairs to our dining room, where they left their candy, and put K's present in her empty trick or treat bag and C's in her own, then set the big present for the both of them in the center of the table. Phew! Finally done! Kevin and I enjoyed a few pieces of the fairy's candy and called it a night.

The next morning the girls woke up and ran to their bags. Kevin and I decided the best present we could get for K was a real bat house. For more than a year now K has been talking about bat houses and about how she wanted one in our next house. Well, here we are in our next house so that bat house just had to be here, too!

C giggled with delight at her owl so that ended up being a good choice as a last minute gift...

and K loved her knitted bat. She named it Stellaluna and fed it leftover pieces of pumpkin from our morning carving. This dirty hand picture is all I got of that bat, K had it in a sling most of the day. Maybe she'll let me get some better pictures tomorrow.

So overall Halloween and the Halloween Fairy's visit were a success. The girls didn't miss their candy at all, especially after opening their honey sticks.

I hope you all had a great one!! I hope to see you for WIP Wednesday. Now it's really time for me to kick the gift making into high gear!

They gave out beeswax butterflies? That's IT, I am moving to Oregon!
And we too have "the box"... comes in handy for all sort of last minute things with their friends as they get older too. Zach LOVES honey sticks, this reminds me to get some more. Looks like a lovely time! If you ever solve the mystery of why nobody was home for trick-or-treating, let us know!

I'm sorry there weren't more houses for the girls, but glad they had an overall good time! I want a beeswax butterfly! :) Holiday crafting is now afoot at our home too, so much to do!

I am so stealing your Halloween fairy idea. Luckily Kage wasn't really into the candy this year. He ate one piece, but he just doesn't know what it is all about since we never give him candy. Next year might be a different story though, so I will plan on having a little gift for him too.

And the bat house is wonderful as is the knitted bat. I so wish some bats would take up residence in our bat house. No luck though. I know we have several that live close by because we see them flying around at dusk. Bats are so cool! Not to mention they help eat all those pesky mosquitoes.

I love the bat house - what a great gift! We love watching bats on summer evenings. :)

We celebrate with our Waldorf friends, so candy isn't an issue and I'm so grateful for that. We had a trick-or-treat trail again this year and all the treats are healthy - one momma brought delicious pears!

Peace,
Carrie

oh my gosh, i WISH we had just a few, I (not joking) had about 400 come to my door... and they were all grabby grabby and crazy! hence my posting today being disheartened with the holiday... love the idea of the beeswax butterflies... nice. we also have the box (bag) so I have a place to put all of the things I find all year for occasions such as this! :) switch witch she is at our house... looks like you guys had a good time!

Wow, that knitted bat is awesome! I'm always trying to finish last minute projects so I can give them away with a mere 5 seconds to spare. We never get any trick or treaters in our neighborhood either. We go to my parent's neighborhood instead.

We do our pumpkin carving on Halloween too. Trick or treating at the farmer's market sounds like a neat idea. And the beeswax butterflies are especially wonderful. The girls seem very pleased.
My head is filled with gift making thoughts too!

How heavenly beeswax butterflies sound! Your neighborhood sounds like mine....only a few neighbors pass out the candy. At least the girls don't get candy overload and they still get a kick out of it.

LOVE the bat! My girls are crazy about bats too, they would take that bat over candy anytime!

We also have the kids give up their candy for gifts. In our house it is the Sugar Fairy that comes to take their candy and she has left things such as crystals, little statues, and this year she left star earrings and a necklace. We love this tradition.
Your kids are adorable...glad you enjoyed your Halloween weekend!

We were the only trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood, too! My kiddo didn't seem to mind at all, either, but next year we're going a few blocks up where I hear all the action is. Nice bat, is that pattern on Ravelry? I love the little owl, too. Every time I see those wooden animals I want to start a collection for my kids, but find it hard to justify the expense...but they're heirlooms, right? :)
