Crafting On

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post it on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

crafting on crafting on Well, well, well, what do you know - I am finally completing the knitted farmyard I started 10 years ago. I had to redo 6 of 12 squares to make them all the same size as well as to update with more aesthetically pleasing neutral colors (instead of the bright ones I originally had). I am about halfway done sewing it up. The plan is to give it to baby F next week for his birthday.

crafting on I didn't get a chance to snap a photo of my current project so I thought I would share a photo from last week. I didn't host Crafting On that week so it sort of counts, right? That photo shows the beginning of the blanket for our couch (that I mentioned last Crafting On). So far, so good!

I am still working on Baby F's birthday scarf but I just may have to toss it aside to work on this new blanket kit that arrived yesterday. I already told K that this kit is not up for grabs!! 😂🙈I have been wanting to knit a white throw for nearly a year now. Merry Christmas to me, eh?!

Thank goodness for knitting, that is all I have to say. Our belongings were delivered out of storage last week - YAY! However, to make a long story short, our landlord said he would remove all of Ms. Thelma's furniture and things but then after our belongings were already on their way to us he changed his mind. The house was already a cluttered mess from all of her things and now we have our things on top of that. It hasn't been easy. I wake up with a tight feeling in my chest as anxiety takes over. Clutter is my kryptonite, friends. I started this birthday present knit for Baby F to help calm my nerves. Now I just need to make time to work on it.

In less stressful news, have you guys comes across these Secret of the Hidden Scrolls books? They are our latest family read aloud and we all love them. Book five was just released an we can't wait to dive in!

K has taken over all my Stitch and Story projects. This one is a baby blanket. For what baby, I do not know. Maybe for one of Baby F's dolls???

This Crafting On is focused on something that K is making - a cabled headband. She has been wanting to learn how to cable for quite sometime. When this kit came to us in the mail last week it was obvious that it was meant for her - even the color screams her name. She actually already finished one cabled headband and had enough yarn left to knit a second one so she is making this one to give to a friend in her RE class.

crafting on Do you ever feel like a project you are working on is doomed? Ha. I have come to the conclusion that this one surely is. I finally mustered the motivation to complete the farmyard play mat that I started 10 years ago for C. Six of the squares are good but six more need to be re-knit. I started on the first one only to discover about halfway through that I didn't have enough yarn. I am wondering if this is a sign that I should just give up? Then again my boys were playing with the squares as soon as I pulled them out so perhaps I should persevere.

Real life Pevensie children (Aslan, too!)

The Pevensie children with Aslan
“To the glistening eastern sea, I give you Queen Lucy the Valiant. To the great western woods, King Edmund the Just. To the radiant southern sun, Queen Susan the Gentle. And to the clear northern skies, I give you King Peter the Magnificent. Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen of Narnia. May your wisdom grace us until the stars rain down from the heavens.”

By now I think you know my feelings about Halloween. This year was different, though. My children requested to be the Pevensie children from the Chronicles of Narnia (our favorite books). It worked out perfectly since I have exactly 2 girls and 2 boys, just like the Pevensies. There was a lot of sewing involved but it was worth it. They requested outfits from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie instead of the books so that more people might recognize who they were. To our surprise most did! I think Beowulf stepping in as Aslan really helped. Some people thought they were a medieval court but then understood once we mentioned Narnia. I think it is safe to say this was their best Halloween yet. Even better still that they now have Narnia costumes to wear on their adventures out in our woods every day. Long live Narnia!!

crafting on Hey guys. Now that the Halloween crafting madness is done I am taking a little selfish break and knitting myself a hat (another awesome stitch and story kit). I am so in love with this colorway. I want to knit Baby F a sweater with it, too.

Our Pumpkin Tradition

Such a serious boy!
baby f laughing so hard group shot!!! sorghum sorghum love their relationship cuties the rare candy experience pumpkin patch

It's that time of year again and I am so happy that this year we were able to do it! As you know we were in a bit of a rough patch while living in Oregon so we ended up not being able to do our yearly pumpkin patch fun and photo. 😞 This has been our yearly tradition ever since I learned how to knit (while pregnant with C) - most important to me is the group shot of all my children in mama made pumpkin hats. So thankful to be out of that barely surviving situation in Oregon to thriving here in Pennsylvania.

*Apparently I need to knit my three oldest new pumpkin hats for next year. These are all knit in the adult size but they are much too short now. Looks like I have a new project to work on but not until after the Christmas rush!

I am actually currently working on finalizing the pumpkin pattern (yay!) as well as finishing up the children's Pevensie costumes but I'd rather share about what K just finished instead. Last week I received a package from Stitch and Story that included two knitting kits. Some of you may have seen my kiddos unboxing them on my IG stories. K instantly claimed one of them - the sweet cup cozy you see above. It was such a fast and easy knit she finished it in one sitting. I am starting on the other kit as soon as my aforementioned WIPs are finished. For those of you that have been wanting to learn how to knit - these kits would be a great place to start! Each kit is geared towards first time knitters and contains very detailed instructions. They also have the softest yarn in the most beautiful colors. You can see their kits and yarn  here (USA) and here (UK). Use code FRONTIER20for 20% off your purchase!

I finished our chunky knit life-sized pumpkin.  I love how it came out but now I feel like it needs a buddy. Maybe even a whole patch of knit pumpkins? Once I figured out how to make the pattern it went really fast so maybe I could fill our house with them before autumn is over...maybe? Would anyone be interested in the pattern if I published it?

crafting on I have a lot of crafting going on at the moment but no photographic evidence of it. With that in mind I thought I would share a project K is working on - a Christmas gift for Baby F. It is a knitted chocolate roll to add to his knitted food collection. It is also from the book Tasty Knits.

To add to Baby F's knitted food collection: pumpkin pie (pattern here). 🎃 Yum, yum. This is probably my favorite knitted food item so far. Perhaps because I love anything pumpkin!

crafting on I finally went out and bought some stuffing so that I could finish working on my life sized pumpkin. I am currently deciding how exactly I want to do the stem. It is being made with smaller needles and worsted yarn (vs. the super bulky I used for the pumpkin itself).

Well, I got as far as I could with my chunky knit pumpkin. I was to the point of stuffing it when I realized I didn't have any stuffing. Oops. Pictured above is the children's handwork from school - weaving on forked branches. I'll share after photos when they are all done.

So I know I said that I would be done with K's sweater within a week but I am only 5 rows away from being done. That is nearly the same. Or so I'd like to think. Also this beautiful wooden watch just arrived - another birthday gift to tuck away for my girl. I think thirteen is the perfect age to get a real watch.

Sorry guys. I have been a bit under the weather these past few days (oh the joy of summer colds) so I haven't been around much. However the silver lining to be sick is getting a lot of knitting done. I am nearly finished with the 2nd sleeve on K's birthday sweater and will be sewing the whole thing up in no time.
