Crafting On

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two, post it on your blog, on Instagram #craftingon and/or Flickr and then share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

Well, I got as far as I could with my chunky knit pumpkin. I was to the point of stuffing it when I realized I didn't have any stuffing. Oops. Pictured above is the children's handwork from school - weaving on forked branches. I'll share after photos when they are all done.

What are you working on? Happy creating!

Our First Week of Homeschool 2018

My children have all been very diligent and perseverant for the most part with everything we have done. Somehow I have been on the ball and waking up in the wee hours of the mornings to make sure we are all on schedule. I pray the year continues in this manner.

Our first week included nature walks to our creek, (including one day that was so hot we decided to take a swim) dyeing silks with natural dyes (some worked but most of them didn't, however I attribute that to not properly mordanting them. Honestly, I never had any hope for the carrot or grass dyes, though), memorized a verse and made use of our leftover corners from making the chalkboard by turning them into mountains (to cement the verse in our brains), oh and we had special guests in the schoolroom - two of our chickens. This. This is how I envisioned homeschooling. Not the way I had been doing it in the past - stressed out and done in. This is the way it was meant to be.

Snippets

almost done! bounty from neighbors' gardens

Our school year begins Monday and I am still doing last minute preparations so this blog post is just little snippets of our lives the past couple of weeks. I have to thrown in here just how excited I am for this school year. I have been a rather reluctant homeschooler up til now (I am not saying I am head over heels still, but I am getting there). There is something about this year that has me so enthusiastic about schooling. Maybe because it is Little L's first real year, or how much I planned out, or maybe even the crazy strict homeschooling laws here that will keep me in line (somewhat joking there). I don't know, but I am going to embrace it! We'll start our day off with a special back to school surprise breakfast treat - waffles with whipped cream. 😋

L's treasures still cleaning them

Little L has been having fun digging for treasures on the banks of our creek. There is one special place her calls his mine where most of the treasures are found, especially after the flooding. He has quite a stash of old glass bottles from that mine but the ones you see above I just can not get clean. The top photo shows how they were when he dug them up and the bottom one is after I scrubbed them with baking soda, vinegar and thieves soap. I got them mostly clean but as you can see in the one bottle there is something stuck inside. Kevin thinks it might be old hardened stove polish (that is what the bottle once held). Any thoughts on how to get it out?

kraut

Made my first ever sauerkraut thanks to a great group of ladies I joined at our local library. It was very Home Fires-esque. I look forward to the next meeting. I was the youngest one there which was a bit funny but eh, that's okay. This is from the group's flyer:  "FULL CIRCLE FUTURE HARVEST is a group of like minded people that meet throughout the year to discuss what WE CAN DO to improve our lives as well as those around us. The programs are presented by the group and community members, including Master Gardeners and healthcare professionals. The group promotes the importance of having healthy soil and growing non-genetically modified seeds to produce nutritious fruits and vegetables, as well as explores the use of functional medicine. Applying these practices to our lives help us attain and maintain a higher quality of life."

helicopter helicopter

Little L's latest creation out of Kevin's old construx - a helicopter. It has already been taken apart and made into a corn combine. He is obsessed with those right now. In September he gets to go visits one of Purple Grandma's friends and ride in one as he harvest the corn. That will be quite the big day for him.

some of our flock Egger (rooster?) Egger rooster

There is a big possibility one of our chickens might be a rooster. This is Egger, one of Little L's chickens. We are a bit nervous about the outcome of this if Egger really is a rooster. Thankfully we live out in the country where we are zoned for roosters so either way we won't have to find him a new home. Phew!!

*Weekend*

hoop dance I need a better lens for these events! I already told Kevin that as soon as we are out of debt the first thing I am saving up for is another lens so I can capture photos from farther away. I love my 50mm but man it only works well somewhat close up.
caught too short Father's day Daddy and his boys Daddy and his boys so much fun! buddy guys IMG_7858 Old Nara swimming for the first time our creek I started this post last Sunday when my computer went haywire. I thought it best to go ahead a post it now while my computer is being nice. 😂

We enjoyed a full Father's Day weekend last weekend. Kevin's Father's Day request was that we go to the Eastern Delaware Nations Forksville Powwow about an hour away from us. We ended up spending most of Saturday there. All of my children were captivated by the drums and the beautiful dances, despite the heat. K was engrossed most of all. She didn't want to leave even for a break in the shade to cool down. Needless to say some of us (me and my children that are mini-mes) ended up sunburned and with a bit of heat stroke. It was worth it. I left there inspired and ready to take on our upcoming school year (lots of Native American studies happening this year).

After Mass that Sunday K made Kevin a batch of peanut butter cookies from 100 Days of Real Food and we spent most of the day outside. Our chicks got "chick recess" (as Kevin calls it) outside by our blueberry bushes for an hour. It is so much fun to watch them out there. It was even hotter Sunday than it was Saturday so we spent a good chunk of the day playing in our creek. We got to watch Nara really swim for the first time (she has always just waded in water everywhere we have ever lived). What a weekend!

p.s. - I had to share a little video of Baby F. He obviously really enjoyed watching the hoop dance at the Powwow. He set up his fire just like they did and everything. He was much more animated the first time around but of course as soon as I break out the camera he gets shy. 🙈

Reading instead of destroying

toddler books toddler books toddler books toddler books toddler books toddler books toddler books

Baby F is getting more and more into reading books instead of destroying them *ahem* and that inspired me. It has been quite awhile since I have shared our favorite board books/toddler books so I thought a new book post was due. Most of the books I am sharing have been gifted to us or purchased since our move, so you will notice they are different than our usual board book favorites (and I am just noticing many of them were recommended by Baby F's Godmother - how funny!). I think you know what I am going to say next - all our books are in storage. 😞

I have to start with Baby F's absolute favorite book right now: Oliver Finds His Way. This was one we picked up at the library on a whim and ended up having to buy our own copy because he loved it so much. It has become his bedtime story each night. He loves to "read" Oliver the bear's roars himself, adding fun and giggles to our bedtime routine. I wish you could hear his cute little bear sounds and see the scrunchy nose he makes when he does them.

Other current favorites are (click on the book images for the links):

These two books did not have images on Amazon but I still wanted to share them with you:

Baby's Seasons (pictured in the 6th picture down)
 The Easter Story
The wooden books pictured were purchased from Nova Natural when K was a baby.
