Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two and share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

I pulled the socks I am knitting for myself out of a short hibernation and am just beginning to turn the heel. Adult socks take a lot longer than baby or toddler ones. I hope I can keep up my enthusiasm for them so I don't end up with just one sock!

What are you working on? Happy creating!

Out of Order

sleepy chubs and me (exhausted and in my old falling apart but very comfy sweater) kitchen window Do you see the robin perched on her nest? Do you see Mama Robin perched on her nest? cooking with baby f smiles

God, husband, children. I know how my priorities should go but it seems I have them all out of order or one barely existing at all. With all of my energy and focus on gently raising my children to make a difference in this world I seemed to have forgotten my poor husband. It became very obvious over the weekend. How easy it is to get lost some days. He is the reason I am fortunate enough to be a mama in the first place. We are a team, he and I, but I admit I have not being giving him all he deserves. I need to work on setting things right and continue striving to be the mama God called me to be, but also be the wife my husband needs. Balance can be such a tricky thing!

Forty-eight hours

echinacea playing small part of our daily bounty Trail Life bake safety/obstacle course event home at last! endless bathing Forty-eight hours is such a small portion of time in the grand scheme of things but when you spend that amount of time in endless worry and comforting heartbroken children, forty-eight hours become excruciatingly long. Thank God, forty-eight hours is all it took to bring our kitty home. I am thankful to say that her coming home filled our hearts with gratefulness and love and gave me a much needed reminder that yes, the world is indeed good. You see, if it wasn't for two incredibly thoughtful and compassionate women, I doubt we would have had such a happy ending.

Bhakti escaped last Saturday night when the children went out in our front yard to bring garbage to the dumpster (just as they do every Saturday night). I was putting Baby F down at the time and I believe Kevin was in the garage or backyard. She must have run out the door when the children were holding it open for one another. I am guessing she just ran in the opposite direction of where they were going so that is why they never noticed her. Normally we see her if she tries to run out and if she did get out, she would just stop at the grass to munch. This time something very different happened. Maybe she got startled. Maybe she was right under their nose and they didn't notice. We'll never know. By the time we figured out she was missing, she had a good ten hour head start on us though. It wasn't until K did her morning feeding of the cats that we realized she was gone.

We searched our house thinking she got trapped in a closet or bathroom (it has been known to happen). After an hour of tearing our house apart we realized that she somehow escaped. We sat down and put the pieces together to figure it all out and made a plan to search for her. My first thought was to put up lost cat posts on a couple of local FB groups. I had posted pets that we have found there in the past and have always found the owners. I posted her picture and information about her and hoped for the best. In the meantime we went out searching and searching for her. Twenty-four hours passed. Nothing. My children cried going to sleep that night, worried sick about their beloved cat. Kevin and I barely slept. I placed bowls of food and water by our front door, just in case she found her way back home. I put Baby F's baby monitor by the food bowls, too so I could hear any meows or munching. I never did. Kevin heard the magpies singing and eating Bhakti's food the next morning though.

We continued to go out and search that day and I checked in on my posts. No sightings yet, but kind responses from people saying they would keep an eye out for her. That lifted my spirits. Then we had to go into town for L's Trail Life meeting early that evening. The girls were invited to attend as well for bike safety and an obstacle course. We spent longer than usual there loading and unloading bikes and then getting a few groceries we needed after the meeting. It was late when we got back home and I put Baby F down first thing while Kevin and the kiddos got the groceries in. As I was putting him down I noticed a car outside our house. It looked familiar but I couldn't quite place it. By the time I came out of my bedroom it was ten pm and the car was gone. Kevin and the children were all in the office on the computer. I walked in and asked, "Who stopped by? Did they have Bhakti?", because that was the first thought in my head. Kevin was too busy frantically typing on the computer so K answered me. She said, "It was Miss Jaci!". She didn't have our phone number but knew where we lived so she got in her car and drove over to tell us that someone found our cat and posted in one of the FB groups about it. I don't own a smart phone and hadn't checked my computer in hours so I had no idea. Apparently the kind person that found her (who was allergic to cats) was going to bring her to a shelter because I didn't respond within an hour or two of her request (again, I don't own a smart phone), but my friend Brandi saw the post and offered to hold on to Bhakti until I responded. Brandi and Jaci sent messages back and forth trying to figure out if it was my cat and then that is when Jaci drove over to tell us about it. Swoon. Those ladies are my heroes! Thanks to them Kevin was able to get in touch with the people that had Bhakti and at ten-thirty at night, he and the three older children went to get her.

She came home very dehydrated (the temperature was in the 100s!), dirty and tired but she was home. She has been bathing, sleeping and drinking non-stop since she came back. All of us have been taking turns loving on her and begging her to never leave us again. I know our attachment to her may seem silly to some but she is our special kitty (post on that here), and I don't know what we would do without her. Thank you, again, Jaci and Brandi!!

I am sorry but I didn't get a chance to snap a photo for this week's Crafting On. Our dearly loved kitty (pictured above) escaped Saturday night and we have been searching for her non-stop since.

pitter patter

garden bouquet from my girls peaceful happy who's there? who is that?! yay it's big brother!
Pitter patter, pitter patter. I sit at my desk sipping my tea and typing on the computer. The rain is gently knocking on my windowsill as a breeze blows through our garden sending calendula flower petals dancing in the air. Kevin just went out the door with all four (!) dogs to go for a run. My children are tucked safely into bed (but surely still awake whispering to one another). I sit here in the warmth of my home sifting through photographs and reflecting on the past few days.

I think of some mothers' sons and daughters that they will never get to hold again. My head lifts up in prayer as my heart breaks. I embrace my children more, as if that will somehow help. I feel helpless and hopeless in light of such hatred and tragedy. Then Kevin gently reminds me that change begins within. We all can let our lights shine to those around us and share love and compassion. Because love conquers all. We can all be the good this world needs. Just as my children have been singing since C's birthday, "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me."

KCCO With Baby F being happier and calmer overall, I am feeling the itch to sew. I am not quite ready to tackle summer dresses for the girls yet but a little kitchen/baby project should be a good warm up. Goodness, it has been far too long!

To fix or not to fix

kitchen sink broken :( garden on the mend soup with gluten-free bread passed out awake twinkle toes baby blues school desk
desk - to fix or not to fix?
fix? Our kitchen fell apart this weekend which led to our whole house falling apart. The sink hose basically exploded and water began gushing out everywhere. Kevin had to just shut down the water until he could fix it or the maintenance men could come (Monday) so we went all weekend without a sink to do dishes. They piled up pretty fast, too. I really should have taken a photograph later in the day today because that photo above is such a tiny portion of the mess that soon followed. We went through every pot, pan and dish we own. The kitchen has been my "frontier" so if it falls behind then it has a huge affect on me and a domino effect on the rest of the house. I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that I was frazzled. Thankfully Kevin was able to do a temporary fix this evening so we could clean our dishes until it is fixed tomorrow (my hero!).

We have been gluten-free for over a week now and I have to say I am feeling pretty darn good. I have so much more energy than usual. Baby F has been happy and even cooing and smiling a lot. It might be a coincidence or it just might be the gluten! We'll keep it going.

To fix or not to fix? That is the question. I have been a few school desks like the one above for awhile now. I posted in out local classified and a very kind woman responded saying she had one that needed some work done that I could have for free. I was thinking it might just need some sanding and painting but it appears that the wood on both the desk and the chair portions is warped all the way through. I don't know if I could even replace it looking at the way it is attached to the metal. Then again I know nothing about woodworking. Can it be done? Would it be worth it? Any insight on this? I would love to be able to fix it up and use it in out home. Right now it is sitting on our porch until I can figure out what to do. Sorry neighbors!

small triumphs

herbal solar oil infusion with lavender, chickweed, plantain, caldendula and chamomile homemade lotion pumpkin yogurt masks C isn't so sure pumpkin yogurt face mask oil pulling chews evening making yep i had to label it otherwise one of my kiddos would have tried eating it! napping sweetness
My little ones and I have been busy in the kitchen lately, but not cooking food, as one would think. We have been concocting every day products like rosemary hair rinse (to hopefully help my postpartum bald spots grow back faster), pumpkin yogurt face masks, body scrub, (all from Taproot magazine), turmeric oil pulling chewslaundry stain remover and my personal favorite - lotion. Goodness how I treasure that lotion recipe, especially here in the dry Idaho desert. It's the only thing that has worked to stop my skin from painfully cracking. One thing I change in the recipe, though, is to use an oil infused with chamomile, calendula, lavender, chickweed and plantain (seen pictured above). Those herbs are powerhouses when it comes to dry skin and thankfully, readily available in my garden. The next project on my list is tackling homemade soap. I think I can get past my fear of lye with the help of my friend Natalie.

You know me, I love creating and making anything I can (I have shared recipes in the past on here for things like toothpaste and deodorant) but what started this desire to make even more of our things than we already did was watching the documentary The Human Experiment. It has me even more inspired and determined to make all that I can myself. Check it out if you haven't already! Now don't get me wrong, I would love it if I could make every.single.thing we use/consume but I am being gentle on myself knowing that is not realistic in this season of life (with homeschooling and a new baby).

A person can make themselves crazy trying to do it all. Believe me, I have tried in the past! I know there are blogs out there written by people that seem to accomplish so much (and good for them!) but I realize they are just like me, sharing their small triumphs. I know doing it all is just not feasible for me...or really anyone. Who knows, perhaps someday I will magically find more time in my days but for now I shall just be content in my small victories and accomplishments.

P.S. - Baby photos totally unrelated but absolutely adorable.

My knitting to-do list is truly far too long for me to ever accomplish yet I can't help but add more projects to it. I finished up the knitting portion of Baby F's bee hat and now I just need to embroider on the bee. On a whim I decided instead to cast on a pair of socks for myself after seeing some beautiful yarn that has been sitting on a shelf far too long out of the corner of my eye. Of course after the idea got into my head, I couldn't find my size 1 sock needles. I spent far too much of my day searching for them to no avail. I have no idea where they could have gone to. They were last used to knit baby socks. It's driving me bananas because knitting with random needles of different lengths is just pure madness. But I really can't justify buying a new set of needles right now so I guess it is what it is. Back to tearing the house apart.

gamble

garden Kales and romainecrystal raindrops Crystal raindrop in our broccoli wheat Wheat crimson clover Crimson clover chamomile Chamomile chia seed pudding withfruit and homemade granola kitty nappers some days there is time to make rainbows he fell asleep in her arms sick days

I took a gamble with our garden this year and planted the seeds directly in the ground in April, far before the snow was gone off of Bennett Mountain (local lore here is that it is safe to plant after the snow there is gone). I half expected my garden to flop but thankfully my gamble paid off. Our garden is flourishing! We have already begun harvesting chamomile, kale and parsley. This year I don't have morning sickness keeping me indoors so my hopes are high. I am looking forward to trying everything else that is growing strong. Ironically we planted wheat this year so that we could go through the whole process of making bread from planting the seeds, grinding the wheat and then baking it. We shall see what the future holds!

Our gluten-free trial has been going rather well so far. Surprisingly most of what we eat was already gluten-free to begin with so the change hasn't been too much of a challenge. Well, other than one of my children wanting fresh baked bread every evening shortly after dinner.

K begged for some chia seed pudding parfaits from the Oh She Glows cookbook for breakfast over the weekend. It took a little longer than planned to get around to it since we had to first make the granola and then the pudding had to sit overnight. We finally had it this morning and it was incredible. Definitely worth the wait for most of us. One of my children was a little skeptical of it at first but as the temperature rose outside she enjoyed this cool and refreshing treat out in the pool and even asked for more.

Baby F came down with the cold that is still lingering in most of us the day after I typed up my last post. I saw it coming when his big brother couldn't help but cover him in kisses. I couldn't blame him - Baby F is pretty irresistible. He was really miserable the first day of his cold but he's a little trooper and trying to smile through it.
