the tour

*I meant to share this last week but I managed to hurt my back so badly that I could barely move for a couple of days. Thankfully some Epsom salt and chickweed soaks along with swimming have helped make it more bearable. I have to remember not to move furniture while pregnant, no matter how strong the nesting urge is!*

Inspired by a new little blessing coming into our lives this winter and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up , Kevin and I moved Little L into the bedroom with his sisters and did a surprise room redo for them. I wish I had some before pictures (oh the clutter and mess!) but below is what it looks like now. The room is small (and a bit dark) and I do not own a wide angle lens so I apologize that I was not able to get a full room shot. I hope the tour helps to make sense of it a bit.

I work hard to make our home feel safe and comforting for our children. I want them to feel like it's as much their home as it is ours. I wanted to make sure that their bedroom especially embraced this feeling. Each child has their own special place that is just their own but they are still together. I love how that works out. We gave K the top bunk on the new bunk beds because we felt she needed the ability to get away (L is not allowed on the top bunk and C is only allowed by K's invite). The nine year change has brought about more of a desire to have time alone so we want to respect that and teach her siblings to do the same.

Kevin made the children's bookshelves that hang by their beds. I could not be happier with them. He is not a woodworker at all but took to the challenge when I begged and pleaded for him to try to make them. They were inspired by these ones that my friend Ginny has up in her home. Her husband made them for her (Ginny, tell him he is a genius. We love them!)

The walls of their room seem too blank and white. I would love to have lazured their walls like I did in our Oregon house but since this is a rental and we only have 2 years left, I thought it best to just wait until the next move.

I still have a few small details I want to add but for the most part the room is done. I am hopeful that following the Konmari method will help keep the room clean and clutter free. I plan on doing the same to the rest of the house in the weeks to follow.

So, you are probably wondering if they liked their new room, right? Well, just see for yourselves!

The big reveal: seeing their room for the 1st time checking out her top bunk happy <3

The answer is an overwhelming YES! They love it. They have been spending every free moment they have in it. K is constantly asking me if she can go to her room to read some books in bed. I am happy (and relieved) that they like it so much.

Details:

- Hedgehog wall decal from Imagine Childhood
- Air purifying Himalayan salt lamp from here
- Wool name banners from this amazing lady
- The girls' quilt  from this shop (Little L's shark quilt was a lucky EBay find).
- Wooden dresser (safely anchored to the wall) from Ikea.

*The baby egg calendar that many of you asked about was from here. It was only about $10 but unfortunately it appears to be out of stock right now and can only be purchased used. I am guessing they will get more in soon, though.

Keep Calm Craft On {crafting on}

The act of creating, in one form or another, preserves my sanity amongst the chaos of life. This explains why I always have more than one project going at a time as well as why my housework tends to fall behind. I enjoy seeing what others are working on and keeping calm with, too. What are you creating? What is keeping you going? Snap a picture or two and share it with the rest of us by leaving your link below.

I put all my current projects on hold for a new test knit that Little L would go crazy over. I can't wait to finish it and give it to him. I know he will go crazy over it! I apologize for the photograph. Flickr wouldn't let me share tonight for some reason and uploading photos to blogger always seems to distort them and make them fuzzy.

What are you working on? Happy creating!

progress and vermicomposting

progress! stars ready to hang progress! dresser done progress! bunk beds done Progress!! Kevin and I both have been working hard all weekend and the children's room is nearly complete. I am hoping to share it with you later in the week.

The children and I recently joined a local homeschooling group so we could find out about field trips in the area. Last week they sent out a last minute message saying there would be a field trip to Freer Organics to learn about vermicomposting the next morning. My girls and I had been wanting to try composting with worms but just hadn't made the time, so I jumped at the chance.

Some days I feel like we are the only people who know what organic even means around here so finding out the Freer Organics was not very far from our home brought great happiness to my heart. As soon as we arrived I could literally see any cares my children had fly away with the fresh air. They were nothing but smiles. Autumn, the owner, graciously welcomed us and let the children get right to work at digging out worms from the worm bin. She explained the vermicomposting process and showed us all the tools they used (Little L liked that part a lot). I loved every minute of it all, asking a million questions. I know my children loved it, too. Little L pretended to be an excavator as he dug up worms for other children who were nervous about getting germs. On a side note - He was highly impressed by Autumn when he started up a conversation about sharks with her. She knew how important they are to our oceans and was happy that Little L wants to save them. He wouldn't stop talking about that all day! C was in her glory making a home for the worms they let us take home (yippee!) so we could try our hand at worm composting. She loves her little worm friends. K spent most of her time working with friends from our neighborhood and then loving on Ben the horse. It was such a great experience. My children didn't want to ever leave. I don't blame them, homesteading is our dream and the life I truly feel we are meant to live. Our new (pet) worms help us to feel a bit closer to that dream.

We are a mess

027 bedroom chaos I used to post more photographs of the chaos that is life in our home but I am now realizing that I haven't been doing so on a regular basis anymore. Really, not much at all since we moved here. I guess I am trying to lift my own spirits and remind my family and I of the beauty here while we lament over Oregon. Perhaps I also assumed that you all knew or remembered the behind the scenes of our home. I wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong impression and think our home is spotless or that we all get along 24/7 because boy are we a mess. And for our home - don't get me started on the dog fur literally coating every inch of this house since I wasn't able to vacuum for a couple of months being down and out. I think sharing a photograph of that might be taking it a bit too far, though.

But in  light of this realization, I thought I would share a photograph of the girls' bedroom at the moment (soon to be the children's bedroom). Actually, its been like this for weeks now while the girls sleep in our king sized bed with Kevin and Little L, my big belly and I squeeze into his twin bed (which is also in our bedroom). We planned on finishing it up and doing some major decluttering last weekend but then we hit a huge snag when one of the major pieces for the girls' new bed was missing. Now the mess sits a bit longer while we wait for our replacement part. Some days it feels like we take one step forward and two steps back around here.

Our life is all this normal messy day to day living, but is that not part of the beauty of living?

KCCO

I am about 3/4 of the way done on the body of my Campside Cardi. I somehow managed to mess up my YOs and knit all of them TBL instead of just the normal way. I kind of like the way it looks so I am just continuing with it. I just hope it will not effect the fit too much. I am already knitting it one size up so that it is extra loose and comfy. We'll see what happens. I am hoping to finish it up soon so I can cast on K's birthday sweater. I found some yarn in my stash that I think she will really like.

struggling

K's tea party menu K's tea party bouquet I still love these shoes! I still do adore these shoes C at the piano little feet duet knitting and a snack Last week I experienced quite possibly the strangest phenomenon, at least since we left Oregon - being at home for five days in a row, three hours at a time all by myself. Well, not truly by myself as I had the company of our five cats, four dogs, fish and snail...am I forgetting anyone?! All three of my children were at vacation bible school just down the road from us. After I dropped them off the first day the house felt quiet and empty. I was excited to get some things done but I just didn't know what to do with myself. It felt so foreign to me and in all honesty, I just wanted my kiddos back! But oh the things I got done once I got past that initial shock. I split the time they were gone between homeschool planning and working on a secret surprise for their bedroom (more on that later). I planned C's school year up until January. That seemed like a good place to pause as I foresee us taking a break Jan/Feb when the baby is born. I felt pretty good planning that far ahead (last year I totally taught by the seat of my pants, not planning ahead of time at all). With perhaps too much confidence, I opened up K's fourth grade curriculum, ready to plan until January and beyond. I got about as far as a glimpse at the math and the first main lesson when I started feeling overwhelmed and panicky. I had to close it back up and walk away. I was not in the right frame of mind looking at it. I know I can't avoid it forever, but just for the moment I will pretend I can.

Somehow I keep thinking that each year of homeschooling will get easier with more experience under my belt, but each year things seem to just overwhelm me more. A lot of it stems from lack of confidence. I know I can do it and that I am meant to do it but boy will I have to work for it. I just need to remember that struggling can be a good thing and not resent it. Life is not meant to be easy peasy, we need the struggles to grow and learn. That is what I will be doing right alongside my children and really, isn't that a gift in itself?
